Trax! Box Q & A

Glad I’m not alone in making the Zeppelin connection. That was a pretty interesting thing to notice. Reminds me of the live version of Public Image when Mike Scaccia (or Al) starts playing “Over The Hills and Far Away” beforehand.

i just listened to that track and yeah how didnt i notice that guitar bit in there before…

but the stuff that really stood out to me is that before they playt the song and just noodle around and talking, someone from the audience can be clearly heard shouting “this is a test!!!”

i guess that track had its fans even back then

The Don’t Stand In Line Pailhead Remix intro sounds way to similar to “when the Levee Breaks” By Zeppelin.

Scarecrow has that drumbeat and pretty much is a copy of that track, hahaha. One of many total rip-offs, or “homages” as Led Zep themselves would say, one of the tracks from Almost Famous, maybe Fever Dog, is a soundalike of When the Levee Breaks. There’s a Damage Manual song that’s very similar as well, and a Killing Joke one.

Yeah, I hear it in Fever Dog, and I’ve heard the comparison of Levee to Scarecrow but I don’t really hear it in Scarecrow. I mean, when It was pointed out I guess I can hear the influence but Jesus, on that Pailhead remix I was waiting for the harmonica to kick in.

The songs are both in the same key. Imagine more slide guitar in “Scarecrow”

My replacement disk arrived yesterday (Sat). Haven’t listened to it yet.

Mine arrived with it already in the box

I’m still waiting for my physical copy to arrive, while listening a downloaded copy of the thing. Hopefully the real deal comes in today.

My beautiful wife bought me this release online, since I couldn’t get it record store day, as a “just because” gift. What a beautiful woman.

Make sure to find her something amazing “just because” one of these days…she’s a keeper!

There is an unreleased REVCO song that sounds like it was made by the Talking Heads (Fish In Cold Water). The Don’t Stand In Line Pailhead Remix intro sounds way to similar to “when the Levee Breaks” By Zeppelin. So, to avoid a law suit, I’m sure that’s why it was shelved.

Dunno about that, since that drum beat is pretty often imitated…think Beastie Boys as well. I drew the same comparison, though, and got a chuckle out of it as it shifts gears into the normal beat for the song. Love the remix…in fact, maybe even more than the original.

“Fish in Cold Water”: not a favorite, but I’m glad we got to hear it. Might have been okay as a Luc Van Acker solo song.

The one stand out on the rarities CD, for me, is Self
Annoyed. That song is KICK ASS. It sounds kind of KMFDMish so that’s probably why it wasn’t released but still… awesome fuckin song.

“Self Annoyed” is probably the most unexpected gem on this release (mostly because most of us have already heard most of the rest). I found myself wishing there had been another album of material like this slotted between Twitch and LORAH…how awesome would that be?

I’m still greatly disappointed that “Where Are You At Now” didn’t turn out to be what we thought it was. Since it was listed as being from 1985, I was hoping for another transition track between With Sympathy and Twitch. It’s great hearing the “missing link” material.

Did anybody else notice that “I’ll Do Anything For You” sounds like a mixture of two studio demos of that song, perhaps recently thrown together? It’s not new vocals (I’m not buying the suggestion that Al went in and recorded overdubs…he doesn’t have that voice anymore!), but I think there may have been two (or more) possibly unfinished takes of that song that were mixed together to make the final version, with Al’s vocals layered over each other. I had that theory when I first heard the download version of the song, but the box set version of the song pretty much proves it for me…when the song supposedly finishes, a fainter recording of it continues to play well past where it should have faded out. It sounds terrible that way, and is yet another screw up that probably isn’t fixed on the replacement disc. The download version sounds more like it should have been the “final” mix. Still, since we have both versions, I don’t mind hearing an extra bit of material at the end of that song.

I count at least 3 possible errors on that first disc: the doubled-up track we know is being fixed, the “Where Are You At Now” that they swear is the right track, and the mix of “Anything For You” that doesn’t end properly. Can anyone with the replacement disc confirm if they fixed anything besides the first error?

My replacement disc has yet to arrive, but Where Are You At Now (according to an email I received from Cleo) is correct. They said Al sent them a master hard drive of stuff from his vault, and he had the track labeled as such. In reality, it is the Cruelty “A” mix from the 12" without a fade out. It’s a real bummer. There was really no need to even include this mix on the set, since the “B” mix is the same only longer.

That’s an interesting theory on I’ll Do Anything For You. The version Al released seems to have an overall better punch to it, but this one is a good version too. The ending didn’t really throw me off, it just sounded like any earlier mix.

I did come across two errors in the credits section. They misspelled Ogre’s last name and Al gets credit for writing “Same Old Scene”, when it was Bryan Ferry (and hopefully they got permission/clearance from Roxy Music…ha ha)

alright enough about this box set…hopefully he gets greedy and has some good stuff put away from the years of 1990 - 1996 know that would be a box set worth talking about.

Mine arrived today from Cleopatra. Replacement disc was included with flyers/catalogues etc in the box.

It’s really a beautiful artifact. Packaging is sturdy–perhaps slightly too much, opening the box was slightly tricky, as was getting the CDs out. The booklet is great, a lot of familiar and new photos, and Athan’s writeup is pretty good (much better than Dave Thompson, who in the past has done liner notes for Cleo projects, and who is a fount of bad writing and misinformation.)

I only got to listen to a few trax last night, but so far, so good. ‘Same Old Scene’ is clearly from a dodgy tape but they restored it very well; ‘Anything For You’ is just an amazing song; the stuff that’s already been released sounds as good as ever. I don’t think it’s been noted here, but the remastering was done by two dudes from Die Krupps.

I’ll be listening to this all day at work…here’s hoping Al releases more from his vault.

Got it today. Quite happy with everything. Self Annoyed is my favorite track for sure!

That would have to include Psalm 69 Live (from the unreleased Ipecac box set), Big Day Out '94, and the Bridge School Benefit. Unless there’s b-sides from those years that just never saw the light of day. I think a better cash grab would be the scrapped version of Dark Side Of the Spoon with ClitourUS…

My copy arrived yesterday, with corrected disc 1 in a separate white paper sleeve. Very nice…I’ve been perusing the book, and it’s a thing of beauty.

Here’s my set along with the box it came in, and just for grins, a box I still have from my last WaxTrax! order…25 years ago.

yea some unreleased sire/warner stuff would be awesome, or at least another box of all the b-sides and unreleased stuff or outtakes collected in one spot (just like the 3cd box from 90s)

especially stuff like extended versions of step / & nursing home

short version of So what , has it been on anything other then a flexi disc.

no, and i think on that flexi disc it’s in mono

but there’s nothing special about it, you can make short version of so what yourself nowadays with the available sound editing tools

Any suggestions for a novice?

download Audacity. it’s free and couldn’t be simpler to use. load the track in it and highlight/delete the parts you want out.

his basic point is that it’s no different than the album version other than the fact that they do a “fade out” earlier in the song. there are no changes in anything other than the length of the song.
