Trax! Box Q & A

After waiting in line at my local record store for hours, I have Trax! Box in hand.

The box is not leather, but is a slick shiny vinyl with silver foil pressed text. The inside is a padded interior with 2 piece CD wallet cases, which are very nice. The book is high quality and very informative.

I’m just going to post about the unreleased stuff, as we’ve heard the other released stuff already.

Disc One:

The demo version/alternate of I’m Falling is featured here.

Same Old Madness is new. It’s a never before heard studio version and differs greatly to the two that we’ve already heard.

I’ll Do Anything For You is a different mix than what Al released for free. It sounds like the same foundation tracks, but mixed differently and with different effects. The older vocals are more obvious in this version.

***He’s Angry is a shorter version that what we’ve heard before, and elements of The Nature of Outtakes are mixed in. It’s really bizarre. **(This is actually a pressing error, see replacement info below)

I See Red is a never before heard studio version, the best version by far.

***Where Are You At Now is not what you think. It’s actually a variation of The Nature Of Love (Cruelty Mix). This should have been labeled as version C of that track. **Not sure yet, but this might appear on the re-pressing of disc one, see below.

Disc Two: The With Sympathy demos are exactly the same as the ones that leaked not too long ago. They are not home demos, but are alternate studio cuts. The unreleased songs are great! Let’s Be Happy and Same Old Scene are excellent. It sounds like they come from a first or second generation sources.

(No need to address Revco or Side Trax discs note: Supernaut on this disc is Al and not Trent)

Disc Seven: The live 82 cuts sound like they come from a first generation source. They have some of the same flaws as what we’ve heard, but they certainly sound better.

Revco’s Fish In Cold Water clocks in at 6 minutes of dancey funk with vocals by Luc Van Akcer. More poppy sounding than what is on BSL.

Self Annoyed is an outtake from The Land of Rape and Honey. There are a couple of loops that were reused for “Destruction”, but this has it’s own set of lyrics and vocals by Al (doing a very good Ogre impression)

Don’t Stand In Line is a vintage remix and not the remixxx that Al released recently.

Supernaut is the Trent version. The Dub Version is also a vintage sounding remix.

The vinyl is clear and sounds great. It comes from a better source than the bootleg that’s floating around and even has an announcer introducing the band, which isn’t on the bootleg version. Very cool.

That’s about it. This is a 10/10 set, Cleo did a great job. It sounds great and looks great. If you’re on the fence about getting this, do yourself a favor and get it!!

I need to catch up on some sleep, but feel free to ask away and I’ll answer any questions you may have.

Bisquit and Wemp…would love to hear your thoughts when you guys have a chance.

*edit: Bisquitodoom gets a special thanks in the liner notes! Way to go bisquit!! [cool]

*********edit 2:

thanks for the write up! answers a lot of questions I had about those unreleased tracks. sounds awesome.

thats awesome wish i got a copy rsd = sucks

RSD this year was actually enjoyable. I pulled an all nighter and met some new people. Talked about music and movies for hours and took quick naps here and there.

Self Annoyed is an outtake from The Land of Rape and Honey.

Glad to hear that. I wish they will release more outtakes from LORAH.

How much did you pay for it?

Just got back with mine. I didn’t expect folks to have trouble getting ahold of it. I called a few shops this morning, and the first one that was open and had it was an hour away in Green Bay, so I made a morning of it and looked up some hiking trails in the area as well. The shop only had one copy, but they told me I was the first one to touch it. Picked it up for $165. I predict it will skyrocket it value to upwards of $170 or maybe even $175!
Pretty excited to spend the day with it now. (I also grabbed the Bowie/Tom Verlaine side-by-side single for Kingdom Come.)

I pulled an all nighter for this too, but the earliest bus I could catch into town only got me to the record store an hour before it opened, and that wasn’t early enough. I think there was only one copy in my whole city, and someone else bought it.

Rhino didnt have it:(

After hitting four different stores, I finally found a copy. I had just missed out at two of the shops, which only ordered one copy. I paid $169 (before tax), and have not opened it yet, I’m resting my body from being in and out of my car the past few hours.

After reading realm’s breakdown, I’m definitely excited to dig into this set. It’s odd that a Nature Of Love mix would be mistakenly titled “Where You At Now”, bit of a big goof there. I was hoping for some sort of early version of the Twitch track. Still, if that’s the only fuck-up, I can live with it. Time to tear this beast open!

He’s Angry is a shorter version that what we’ve heard before, and elements of The Nature of Outtakes are mixed in. It’s really bizarre.

I’m still digging through everything, but you’re right about this sounding bizarre. Honestly, I think it’s a total fuck-up. It’s both songs playing at the same time, and is basically unlistenable. There isn’t even a clean ending; the Nature part just cuts off when He’s Angry finishes.
(Also, this version He’s Angry and the Early Trax version are both 3:55.)

Both shops i went to didnt even order it :frowning:

Managed to score one this afternoon at Good Records in Dallas. Steve Earle played a 6 song solo set, not a bad little afternoon. Good Records told me they got 4 copies, I bought the last one around 2pm.

So far, I love the thing. The “Don’t Stand In Line” (Remix) and Supernaut (Dub Remix) are fantastic. Perhaps the “Supernaut” (Trent Vocals) will settle that debate.

Can’t wait to dig a little deeper into this, I’m very satisfied with my purchase.

kinda bummed that none of those Twitch photo outtakes featured in the Without Sympathy exhibit were included in the book. That said, it is full of cool photos I’ve never seen before.

whats the chance of a mp3 of the supernaut dub mix to hear.

I don’t have a copy in hand yet although I’ve been assured that I’ll be receiving one soon. Until that time I really don’t have much to say about it.

As I’ve said, I’m mostly curious to hear which early live versions Cleo used.

Speaking of RSD, I didn’t get a chance to make it out but my brother did bring me a old Sansui receiver from the 80’s that I’ll be cleaning up and using in my vinyl listening system. So there’s that.

sad thing before you know it the whole box set will be on torrents sites to download.

For those who missed it and still want it, $159.98 plus shipping:

Just picked up a copy on behalf of Slack who I’m now publicly shaking into telling me where and when he wants to pick it up.

I just ordered a copy directly from the Cleopatra Records website. It’s currently listing around $159. but with tax and shipping it’s about $185 “all in”. Looking forward to checking it out. Thanks realmdemagic for the initial review!
