I’m enjoying “Same Old Scene”. Great interpretation of the Roxy Music track. Trying to figure out (just based on listening) who also contributed:
Al - vocals, keyboards, synths, guitar
Brad - bass (really stands out on this track)
Shay - backing vocals (at least I think I hear female backing vocals)
Drums - could have been Stevo, but it sounds programmed (perhaps the same drum machine used later for Halloween - sounds very similar)
Never thought this would see the light of day. Awesome!
I have to admit, I only bought the early trax CD when they re-released that stuff a while back. honestly, I wasn’t motivated to get it really, nor the others. Not sure why. I think I may even have the mono version (how do you tell that again?).
It was just Side Trax that was incorrectly pressed in mono. It has a different matrix number than the corrected version, but it’s pretty obvious when listening to it. Getting the correct stereo version was another reason for me to get the box set.
wonder if thats legit tho? would he really sign ws?
Yeah, I think he would have done it…for $1000 a pop. But he hadn’t gotten any takers so far when I asked him about it. I’m doubting any paid up after that, either. And if they did…well, they’ve got more money to throw away than most of us. “The Last Sucker”, indeed.
Funny thing is, there was a video playing on a big screen right on the other side of the wall from Al showing early footage of him playing With Sympathy songs. The gallery was full of With Sympathy-era photos. And TRAX! Box has With Sympathy demos on it. And yet, there he was in the midst of it. That alone was worth the price of admission (free!).
What (if any) possibility do you guys think there is of a separate release of all the outtakes from this box, so the poor stiffs like me who couldn’t afford it/find it could hear it?

I think they’ll eventually reissue everything on this somehow, but not as something simple like a 2CD set of just the unreleased stuff. Maybe bonus tracks on CD reissues of the Revco albums or Side Trax, tracks on compilations, stuff like that. (I also wouldnt be surprised if such reissues also included songs that aren’t on this set.) If there’s something Cleopatra’s good at it’s milking a back catalogue.
My local record store that was sold out of it on Record Store Day was able to order it in again for me, and it arrived this week. I just got it home so I haven’t heard the music yet, but the book is very nice.
My beautiful wife bought me this release online, since I couldn’t get it record store day, as a “just because” gift. What a beautiful woman.
So I’ve listened to the rarities disc and the big sexyland both still fuckin awesome. I don’t really tell a difference between the original Big Sexyland CD and this new issue one. But I’ve never really been one to pick up on those things unless the sound it’s completely different (See the Misfits 12 hits from hell unreleased songs versus the original songs)
The banned version of Physical sounds like the same track that is on the industrial strength machine music compilation.
There is an unreleased REVCO song that sounds like it was made by the Talking Heads (Fish In Cold Water). The Don’t Stand In Line Pailhead Remix intro sounds way to similar to “when the Levee Breaks” By Zeppelin. So, to avoid a law suit, I’m sure that’s why it was shelved.
The one stand out on the rarities CD, for me, is Self Annoyed. That song is KICK ASS. It sounds kind of KMFDMish so that’s probably why it wasn’t released but still… awesome fuckin song.
