Southern Comfort is another AMAZING movie from the Hill.
yeah, Walter Hill used to be a benchmark, recently i have been less interested in his newer stuff, and i really didnt enjoy Deadwood all that much, i didnt even finish it actually. but Alien 1-3, The Warriors, Streets of Fire, Southern Comfort… his success list just goes on. haha.
Yeah, Southern Comfort is really great. I thought it was pretty cool that both Powers Booth and Keith Carradine from that film turned up in Deadwood. I didn’t expect much from Deadwood but it ended up being one of my favourite shows, i love it. In terms of Hill i think The Warriors is the only one i never really liked, although i’m in the minority there!
You don’t love The Warriors!!! BLASPHEMY!!! Huge Walter Hill fan here…I love the desolate backwoods paranoia of Southern Comfort…totally underrated film…and what a cast…anything Powers Booth is in is great(remember when he played Jim Jones?)…
Oh yeah Deadwood was excellent too…it was sacrilege that they cut it short…it never got a proper ending…wonderful show…it got the short shrift just like Carnivale…shame on you HBO…

Diane Lane mmmm :drools:
I know, everybody does love The Warriors it seems, i’m not sure why i didn’t like it to be honest. I think out of all his great film my personal favourite is Extreme Prejudice; it’s just the toughest fucking film ever!
Diana Lane is phenomenal in Streets of Fire, woooowww!!! It was an absolute shame that Deadwood got cut off at the end of series 3, anyone i know who’s watched it came back to me saying “Great show, where’s the rest of it?”. HBO cocksuckers indeed. I found a load of samples of Deadwood a couple of onths ago and made a little track with them, i called it “Cox-Zucker”, hahaha. There’s quite a few of Mr Wu going “COCKSUCKAH!!”
[reply][reply]I got The Warriors on Blu-ray from Netflix yesterday…the extended version.
Is that the one with the intro by Walter Hill and some kind of 300-type comic book thing at the start?[/reply]
I have that one but it isn’t the Blu-ray…I’m curious if the Blu-ray is something else…
Extreme Prejudice is a nasty little film…dig it a lot…[/reply]
I love Hard Times and the Long Riders also…and of course 48 Hrs…overlooked, forgotten films…I’m such a fan I’m one of the few who dug Trespass and Johnny Handsome…

Trespass and Johnny Handsome are both great! William Sadler is such a bastard at times in Trespass. Always loved 48Hrs, I even enjoyed the sequel. And i definitely agree on Hard Times, it was fantastic. Robert Tessier, the bald fighter, was a real staple of movies at that time, he looked like a real bad bastard. I only saw The Long Riders once and was amazed at how much Young Guns rips off elements of it, specifically the bullet hits, if i remember right.
I think Hill’s the kind of director that not many people know, but those who do know him love him. His characters have a certain way of talking and they live by their own codes. Handguns are as loud as cannons in his films. Pretty much all his films could be set in western times if you stripped them to the bare bones - i just remembered Red Heat is pretty much the exact same plot as the Bronson/Mifune western Red Sun. Last Man Standing, a remake of Fistful of Dollars/Yojimbo/Red Harvest, another great film.
I think John Woo’s talked about how much Hill’s films influenced him, as well as Sam Peckinpah, who seems to have been a big influence on Hill as well, i suppose Peckinpah directed Walter’s script for The Getaway so there’s that connection too. Classic minimalist tough guy stuff, great films.
Some really strong points regarding the work of Hill,J…I’ve pointed out to friends how the hand guns always sound like cannon’s as well haha…great observation…Tarantino has given Hill props as well along w Woo…
Oh and William Sadler is pretty much a bastard in every film he is in…haha,I wouldn’t want him any other way…the couple of times I’ve seen him play a good guy it always feels awkward and I calmly wait for him to go ballistic or do some evil shit…

I think that group, with Peckinpah, would probably be my favourite directors. My dad got me into Hill and Peckinpah when i was young and i’ve always really enjoyed their stuff. They don’t make 'em like that any more!
Huge Peckinpah fan!..was just watching Bring me the Head of Alfredo Garcia the other night…have you heard about this cult film from 79 that has been unearthed and is making the art house rounds right now called The Visitor? Apparently, old Sam has a cameo in it…I have a good amount of knowledge regarding cult classics but somehow this one eluded me…the trailer for it looks fucking bonkers…

Yeah, i saw The Visitor on tv years ago here in the UK, only once though. John Huston’s in it too. It’s a very very weird film, i thought i’d imagined it until years later i managed to find some info on it. I noticed on Twitch.net or somewhere the other day it was getting a bit of renewed interest. It really is very very strange. Bring Me The Head of Alfredo Garcia is possibly my favourite film ever. Warren Oates is amazing in it. “Where’s the cut-off?” “It’s right here… but you going to have to take it”
Yeah The Visitor trailer looks outstanding…like an acid trip come to life…I want to check it out…I’m assuming Peckinpah’s part was brief??
Yeah Alfredo is one of the all time greats…Warren Oates just owns everyone…
Yeah, i don’t think Sam’s in it that much. I remember seeing it and thinking “Hmm, that’s John Huston. HOLY FUCK! THAT’S SAM PECKINPAH!!” It was a looong time ago when i saw it, but i do remember it being very weird. I’m surprised it’s been picked up for reissue, it’s such an odd film.
First 3 minutes are here, but skip over the review if you’re interested in seeing it, it gives away some of the events of the film… none of which i remembered to be honest.
