We may bag on Dave Mustaine for being a born again Christian/Republican, and hate on the new stuff, but I figured this would be a good way to get recommendations since the only album I’ve ever heard all the way through is Killing Is My Business. I’m sure I’m mainly gonna see Peace Sells, Rust In Peace and Countdown To Extinction the most, or all 3 in different orders. I just wanna know where I should go next.
Then just throw a dart for your next picks. But the above two are absolutely essential. Especially “Rust in Peace” which is one of the top metal albums of all time.
I really like rust in peace it’s the crown jewel for megadeth as far as I’m concerned.
As far as the newer stuff i like the system has failed album quite a bit… Scorpion, kick the chair, Title track (oops i thought blackmail the universe was the title track) just to name a few but really the whole album is great

I was watching an episode of That Metal Show with Dave on there. They ended the show with their which album is better debate. It was pretty split, but Dave said Peace Sells was his favorite out of the two because that’s when they were the most pissed off and hungry. I guess it’s onto whichever is cheapest on my next music shopping trip.
As for newer Megadeth, I didn’t think United Abominations was bad.
Let me also give a rousing nomination for ANYTHING BUT SUPERCOLLIDER. Seriously, Supercollider is the worst Megadeth album of all time and sounds more like Nickleback than Megadeth.
I’ll add my vote for Rust in Peace. As Gunnar said, one of the greatest metal albums ever. It never gets tired, such a fantastic album. I hear, however, that the remastered version kinda changes things, although i’ve never listened to it.
After Rust, i’d say Countdown to Extinction. Mustaine’s an asshole, but he has put out some great stuff, and i’d definitely never tell him what i think of him to his face. He cannot sing live at all though - when the Big 4 show was broadcast from Sofia, Bulgaria, he was really straining for the notes, yet when the blu-ray came out a while later, it seemed he was note perfect. I think some judicious tweaking was done to make him sound a bit better.

I’ve seen him live 3 time now and he always sounded great. The first was in a smaller indoor venue (900 people, maybe) and the second time was humongous outdoor arena (70K).
I’m not really analyzing anything for pitch perfect delivery or anything, but if someone is “way off” I’ll notice it. Whether or not his vocals were 100% I can say that the band both instrumentally and soundwise has been absolutely on point every time.

Yeah, they are musically perfect, all great musicians. Maybe “weak” would be the best way to describe his vocals live, but that’s understandable with the technical onslaught his hands are unleashing at the same time. I dunno, his voice just sounds a little bit reedy to me at times, but there’s no disputing the instrumental virtuosity.
By the way . . . . if you want a good “greatest hits” collection, they put one out 5 years ago called “Set The World Afire” which is a really good smorgasbord of old and new (well, not the newest of the new, but at least up to 2007 or whatever) . . .
It’s a great 2 disc set which has a good portion of the “must have” tracks and gives you a good feeling for what the different eras/ albums have to offer.
Rust in Peace… I hear, however, that the remastered version kinda changes things, although i’ve never listened to it.
Let me confirm it for you. It’s so bad it should be criminal. I think the only song that was “helped” was Dawn Patrol and that’s cause they cranked the bass guitar. other than that Dave resings ALL of the vocals trying to sound like James Hetfield did for S&M and he’s replaced a few solos. just utter shit.

I can’t really get behind that album. I think “Foreclosure Of A Dream” is it for me on that album. Everything else sounds very manufactured and insincere. I would Say the system has failed is a far superior album.

On that note, if y’all can get the SINGLE for “Hangar 18” there’s a long version on it that just absolutely KILLS! There’s also an amazing live version of “The Conjuring”.
I need to get this again, actually, as it was a cassette of mine that was probably eaten by a car stereo God-only-knows how many years ago.

Hold on . . . maybe I’m remembering it wrong, haha!
I’m checking the internet now and it looks like the LONG version is what made it to the album, but there was another shorter “radio friendly” version.
If you already bought it, you’ll still dig the Conjuring, but my apologies on the possibly bad Hangar info.

A friend of mine bought the reissue when it came out and was disgusted. He’d worn out his previous copy years before and i’d been playing the album quite a bit, so he picked up the new version. He ended up copying my CD and binning the one he bought, i never listened to it but will always remember the outrage over that CD.
