The (Un)Official Ministry Album Tier List

[reply]It seems like a classic case where the kid is rebelling “fuck you mom I’m gonna go do drugs!!” and then mom finally wises up and says “ok go do it” and the kid goes out, has a bad scare, and realizes maybe that level freedom wasn’t so great after all…

Yeah, because that’s totally common and falls directly under the category of “Classic Cases”.[/reply]

HAHAHAHA!!!

I can’t count how many times my mom and I had that exact scenario play out.

I don’t think DSOTS was a “fuck you” to the fans at all. That takes away from the album and any genuine emotion or honesty that was put into making it. I’d like to believe it meant a bit more to them than that.

I think it was the only album they could have made at that point in time and was the album they wanted to make. This idea that DSOTS could have only been made while they were on a major label is ridiculous. It is far too tedious and is almost completely lacking any commercial singles. One of the many things that makes it awesome is the fact that they made it while on a major label - especially after FP.

I don’t think it was all Paul but I do think he had a larger role on the album or at the very least a larger role than he had on some of the past albums.

I’m not insinuating that it was made solely as a “fuck you” to the fans. I may have misconstrued my point. I think you’re right that the emotion and atmosphere of it was genuine, and that it was the album they had to/wanted to make.

However, on the lyrics of “Step” you can kind of see what I was trying to say…which is more that it was maybe a “fuck you” to the fickle MTV generation fans they had gained with ‘Psalm 69’…the same people who hated ‘Filth Pig’ and they knew (or should have known) would undoubtedly dislike ‘DSOTS’ as well…it’s all very tongue in cheek.

To me it reads like, “ok you hated ‘Filth Pig’?! well let’s see how you like it when we go even further down the rabbit hole! Because we’re going to do exactly what we want to do with this record.”

And when I say it’s an album that could only have been made on a major label I should clarify that what I am referring to is the production quality, which has taken a hit on every album since, and the only explanation that seems to make sense is that they had a bigger studio budget due to being on a major label.

Yeah, because that’s totally common and falls directly under the category of “Classic Cases”.

I’m not sure why but your posts seem to have an unnecessary attitude to them…

I understand what you guys are getting at. It’s not “fk you" to intentionally make something abrasive or unlikeable to mess with people. It’s a "fk you” attitude that, despite having an awareness of what might sell well, and what the label (and many fans) wanted from them, that they were willing to just go balls-out on this Kamikaze mission of potential commercial suicide and make exactly what they wanted (or, what we can assume they wanted, since Al still hasn’t copped to having any memory of it).

EEEXACTLY

And commercial suicide it was indeed, as time would tell.
I think things would be a lot different for the Ministry gang if an album like ‘Houses of the Mole’ had popped out instead. However what-ifs are pointless and I’m really glad things went the way they did.

If HotM came out in place of dsots, it wouldn’t have been as successful. metal died for a wee while in the 90s because of nu metal and hotm isn’t nu metal.

I reckon a lot of the people that bought Pslam 69 were probably finding their wings (or ears) in music and would never have “came back” anyway cos they would hop along to whatever was in vogue at the time. Maybe if Ministry had changed like Machine Head? haha.

It’s redundant to talk about it tho eh.

although, one of the dsots guitarists joined ICP, or was supposed to do something with them until they fell out and wrote “diss” songs about each other.

That’s a good point, actually, about what was burning up the so-called-metal scene at that time. It was all horrible nu-metal and rap-metal and whatnot. I remember Ozzfest at the time had Crazy Town, Method of Mayhem (Tommy Lee’s metal rap thing), P.O.D., Drowning Pool, Disturbed, and a bunch of other garbage. It was hilarious. It’s like Sharon asked the booking agent what was popular at the moment and told him to find a bunch of them without a care in the world.

I’m noting this one, especially, since Ministry were originally supposed to headline the second stage, but something fell apart and their slot was filled with Soulfly.

I always meant to ask Mikey what happened with that tour, but never remembered. Guess I’ll never know now.

I went to one of those Ozzfest to see Sabbath…that band Crazy Town was on the bill…they were hands down the shittiest fucking puke band I have ever witnessed live…I mean just rotten…

I didn’t see their set. They were a lame ass one-hit wonder with some cheesy dancey rap club type song called “Butterfly” (Come, mah lady, come come mah lady!!!) that had no business at a metal festival.

But I imagine they were pretty bad.
I honestly avoided watching most of the crap at the Ozzfests I went to.

Oh, I just remembered the other stupid nu-metal band that was on one of the bills . . . . INCUBUS. I’ve always hated that band.

I think the only band from all those shows that I ended up kind of liking was Godsmack. Not enough to buy even one CD, mind you, but I thought they were really good live.

I went to Ozzfest like 3 or 4 times and other than Ozzy, I think the only other band that I really gave a crap about was MAIDEN. And thank God Maiden were on the bill that year, because Sabbath (due mostly to doped out zombie Ozzy) were pretty awful that time.

Yeah,I went to two ozzfest’s and rarely watched all the opening bands either…for some reason we saw Crazy Town…I think we were meeting up with some people and they were playing…it was total ear rape…they had the douchiest stage prescence of all time too…

The only other bands I remember watching enire sets of were Slayer and Sabbath…

and yeah dude, that Butterfly song is the pure Ebola Virus Zaire…

If HotM came out in place of dsots, it wouldn’t have been as successful. metal died for a wee while in the 90s because of nu metal and hotm isn’t nu metal.

Anti-Bush songs died for a while in the late '90s too.

drop in production on animositisomina?

well… it was recorded in same studio as all the following albums (al’s sonic ranch or w/e its called).

check out supermanic soul by the way… it has live drums. or i dunno, they sound like drums.

on most of the following songs on DSOTS drum sound is totally different from supermanic soul. the drums are “thinner” and not “in your face” - trend that escalated even more on animositisomina.

And when I say it’s an album that could only have been made on a major label I should clarify that what I am referring to is the production quality, which has taken a hit on every album since, and the only explanation that seems to make sense is that they had a bigger studio budget due to being on a major label.

Well, I’m glad you clarified because that’s a load of bullshit right there. Anybody who’s had any time in a studio can tell you that what you’re saying is bullshit (and don’t tell me you have or are knowledgeable just because you’re in a band).

As of late the only degradation I’ve noticed is due to laziness. Al could easily make a layered amazing sounding album if he tried or still had it in him. Also, getting rid of the shit drum machine he’s using all of the time would greatly benefit the sound - but that’s a result of laziness. Technology isn’t reserved for major labels.

I don’t get why people are saying Animositisomina had worse production quality. The only difference I hear is a fuck-ton of hi’s. Which is NOT a result of them not being on a major label but likely one of tinnitus or an attempt to make the album sound intentionally abrasive and harsh. Aside from that it sounds fine.

Some of you people do not know what the fuck you’re talking about and it’s obvious with your inability to actually explain what it is you’re trying to say in a single post.

I’m not sure why but your posts seem to have an unnecessary attitude to them…

I’m pretty sure the reason you’re seeing that or feel that way is because you’re a pussy. Or maybe you just need to not take shit so seriously. Should I beat around the bush so your feelings don’t get hurt, Sally? Lighten up.

I don’t get why people are saying Animositisomina had worse production quality. The only difference I hear is a fuck-ton of hi’s.

Agreed. I don’t think the production is bad…just that the treble is up…probably on purpose. The treble is higher on DSOTS for sure. Both are fine with me.

Rush’s Vapor Trails…just terrible loud/hi mix…sad.

psalm69 was last ministry album with proper mix and audio quality - on cd it literally has NO digital clipping and good dynamic range for an industrial metal album.

filthpig was significant volume increase (these were early days of loudness wars), it was on average 2.5 dB louder than Psalm69, but still there was some room i guess

darkside on average has same loudness as filth pig

animositisomina is a whooping 3 dB louder than filthpig/darkside, that doesnt do any good to any mix…

i dont think Animositisomina had bad production. i dont think it was any different than pig or darkside. however, the sound quality suffered alot. it was combination of things: loudness wars plus “tinnitus al” plus something else maybe? everyone pointed out the torturing amount of treble on it.

its hard to justify that amount of treble and such mix or a master or whatever as a stylistic choice or something that was done on purpose to sound ugly or unpleasant - in reality it just gives fuckin’ ear fatigue.

because the songs arent anything new and you dont have to fuck up the quality to sound unpleasant or creepy or weird or with really crazy distortion - dark side has all that throughout (weird: step, creepy: nursing home, distortion paradise: kaif, unpleasant: ty coon vox XD) with much better sound quality.

And DSOTS has “Eureka Pile”. It has “Eureka Pile”. EUREKA PILE. So, that alone makes it far superior.

I never get sick of that song. The weird guitar intro that goes into that awesomely unexpected bassline and beat. Man, when I first heard that song I wanted to set my couch on fire out of pure happiness or something that isn’t negative that would cause one to set their furniture on fire.

For being such a “slower” less aggressive song it gets the blood pumping better than any of the thrash/metal bullshit of recent years.

Bla Bla Bla you clarified Bla Bla Bla load of bullshit Bla Bla. Anybody Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla a studio Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla is bullshit (Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla ).

You mean her own son Jack?

I’m noting this one, especially, since Ministry were originally supposed to headline the second stage, but something fell apart and their slot was filled with Soulfly.

Second stage? The same stage as Kittie and Disturbed that year? You’ve got to be kidding me. A band with a platinum album and plenty of radio and MTV airplay on the second stage, yet Static-X and Godsmack got high spots on the main stage? Give me a fucking break.

Wow, you actually put effort into that. You didn’t even just copy and paste a string of “Bla’s”. You cannot be helped at this point.

Yeah, same one (I saw both of those sets, actually).

I was actually stoked for it, though, as the second stage was all open/GA style viewing so I could have just shoved up to the front. On the main stage I’d have been watching from the lawn . . . About 600 feet away, haha.

Wow,Static-x…talk about a band that just shamelessly ripped off Ministry…and that singer who looked like the Slim Jim guy…
