It’s not bad, it’s not great. I found it pretty schizophrenic and unlistenable at times, definitely not something I can handle first thing in the morning and that says a lot.
Strangely enough, I listened to it first thing this morning - it’s a pretty good workout record.
The more I listen to “I’m sensitive” the more I like his intro rant. I already liked this song but his intro growing on me even more. It’s just fun… that mocking tone of voice is fantastic.
On repeated listens the spudnik and steel gates songs are certainly the stand out tracks. I think i like spudnik the best. i like the sample of the guy talking about the satellites. He sounds so proud. Great release by Al. I hope the trend continues
So you can enjoy slightly larger cover art without the unsightly hinge line, I guess?
The sleeves are kind of neat when the booklet art is something different, so there’s the public cover on the sleeve and then a hidden one that only people who have opened the album have seen. Marilyn Manson used to make good use of this.
Can anybody explain the purpose of the cardboard sleeve? I know it’s a Nuclear Blast thing, but what’s the point? Just to annoy?
I’m wondering how they planned this out. I got the shirt/beaker/signed CD bundle. The CD came typically, shrink wrapped. Then the signed cover was included separately. So, I have the cardboard slip, a jewel case cover, and a signed jewel case cover.
I have several albums with that funny external sleeve. I’m kind of reckless with my stuff so I don’t mind them. It keeps the cases from popping open when I toss them around.
Been listening to this in the car (humorously right before I go teach yoga) and liking it quite a bit. Definitely my favorite thing since Last Sucker and probably since House of the Mole. I think Al does well with a smaller budget, it lets his dorky humor come through in a more satisfying manner. I like how all the songs mash into one another with no break between tracks. The punk rock first half leads to the stranger second half. “Unlistenable” is my least favorite song, but it’s hard to hate any song that leads to the “Devo fucking rules” punchline. The two tracks after the great “Gates of Steel/Spudnik” duo sound like Al working in a similar style to Download, which is something I never expected. I’d actually like to hear Al and cEvin Key work together as they’re both in LA and love weed it might work if only for a song or two.
I was thinking more along the lines of all the sample-based instrumentals on early KMFDM CDs. I wouldn’t say SMM quite gets into Download-style craziness. SMM + Download collaboration sure would be interesting, though.
I’m really enjoying this album. Although I would’ve liked to see more tracks in the vein of I’m Invisible, the punk rock vibe is refreshing. The transitions between the tracks are smooth.
The only meh track is the aptly named Unlistenable which might become more listenable as time goes on.
I didn’t like “I Don’t Wanna” upon first youtube listen but after hearing it in the car a couple times, I’m diggin’ this track too.
This is my favorite Al J album since Sexo Olympico???
[shocked]
I like it! It’s all over the place and generally a complete mess. It’s absolutely the most punk rock thing Al and co. have put out in forever and even the weaker Ministry-esque tracks are fun.
It is the year of our lord 2K16 and Al put out something awesome. I’m 16 again. All I need is a nagging stepmother and a stolen pack of Marlboros and it’s the release of Rio Grande Blood all over again.
