It was $400mil. . .still too much.
I think you’re right. I saw it about 25 years and thought the same thing. My parents and any boomer generation person will still swear by it’s scariness, and I just never saw the horror. I think the satan statue at the beginning in the middle east along with all of the digging and the score that goes with it is probably the scariest specific thing about it.
But i do agree with queer, the director definitely created a malevolent atmosphere. But I think that had to do more with lighting, camera angles, and set dressing, not so much with what was going on with the story, but the architecture around the actors and the story.
I haven’t seen Jacob’s Ladder. For me the scariest movie I’ve seen is Se7en. Anything supernatural doesn’t scare me, but the psychopaths that walk among us… oooo shudder
Checking out the 1990 version right now based on your recommendation
Exorcist: The Heretic isn’t as bad as people make it out to be. If anything, it’s the most ‘surreal’ Exorcist film. It’s just a total acid trip and makes bugger all sense. But it’s great to watch stoned and there are some killer psychedelic, atmospheric sequences happening.
The real horror of the first film, wasn’t in the exorcism itself, but in the events leading up to it. The sense that, although everything seems normal, there is something happening just under the surface that fills the viewer with dread.
The scene where the mother hears the noises in the attic and goes to investigate and the camera quickly shows a close up of Regan’s face and she’s staring with dead eyed horror into the camera is one of the scariest scenes of any horror film. Same goes for when the mother comes home from the film set and it’s late and the phone rings and then the lights flicker and go out. Scared the pants off me.
The third one is great but it’s different kind of horror movie.
The new one is excrement.
Exorcist 3 has found a whole new cult audience and it has an absolutely powerhouse performance by the great long time character actor Brad Dourif’…it is directed by the writer of the original Exorcist( also check out his film the Ninth Configuration)…it is also known for having one of the great all time jump scares in it…each time i watch it i like it more…
Exorcist 2 has its pronounced flaws but I agree it isn’t as bad as it’s rep…directed by the great John Boorman who did such classics as Deliverance, Point Blank and Excalibur it is indeed a surreal trip…Linda Blair hated making it apparently…
Just finished Jacob’s Ladder. Had to watch it in parts cause When I started it, it was later in the evening and I fell asleep on it about an hour in. It was not bad. You could tell whoever wrote the story was heavily influenced by Ambrose Bierce’s “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge.”
You can also tell how excited you wete typing those last two sentences.
So industrial.
I’m not that old and I remember when Hollywood could make hit movies with a fraction of that budget. They’ve gotten so bloated and reboot happy I honestly haven’t been to the theater in at least a year.
Rewatched The Firm - 1993 - Forgot how fucked up this movie was.
I Saw the Devil…brutal S Korean revenge film…fucking outstandingly good
Aside from revenge, what is it about?
It has revenge at the core of its story but is about so much more…there are many twists and turns and probably one of the most honest portrayal’s of psychopathy ever put to screen…it’s incredibly technically proficient also, its shot so well… bizarrely there is a love story under it all and explores the level of pain that never leaves one after someone you love is taken from you…also deals a lot with what what committing violence will do to a mans psyche…its a powerful, brutal, ugly yet beautiful film that i would highly recommend…not for the faint of heart though…
I was living in Memphis when they were filming this movie. I worked on Beale Street as a bartender. I was working the night they filmed the scene with the kids doing back flips and tom and jeanne were walking down Beale. When they filmed the walking and talking down beale Tom walked on the curb and Jeanne walked on the street. (Tom is short) The owner of the club/restaurant I worked at was pissed because they had the whole place blocked off. It feels very nostalgic to me to watch that movie.
Very cool Slack! I’m a sucker for Tom Cruise & Liam Neeson flixs.
I still need to check out Exorcist: Believer, but I don’t have high expectations for it.
I watched Indecent Proposal for the first time ever, found a cheap DVD copy the other day. I remember the trailer playing all the time on TV back in the day. Decent movie, way better than I thought it would be.
Lastly, I watched though The Sandman on Netflix for the 4th time. Loved the comics as a kid, and the show is fantastic.
Oh I LOVE Liam Neeson. Remember after “Schindler’s List,” everyone thought he was some kind of serious actor’s actor? Now he’s a poor man’s action flick staple. And it works!
Reacher - Season 1 on Amazon. I enjoyed it! Started S2.
I Saw the Devil…one of the best and most brutal Korean films ever made…
Found this on FB; artist unknown. It’s called “Attack Ships On Fire,” and it was in a Blade Runner thread. I wanted to share it with you, but had no idea where to put it. Feel free to move it to another topic if you like.
Nice one,lowelly
