RSD2015 (get out your wallets)

That looks damned cool! Probably won’t buy it at that price given its not vinyl but hope it gets released in other ways. Want to hear that unreleased Revco track.

I just ordered a second one for myself. Initially the boss wasn’t even ordering one for stock.

OMG wrong login!

cool! I can’t buy anything physical anymore, but hope this gets a digital release…really wanna hear this unreleased tracks (even though much of it seems to have been heard already)

surprised So So Life isn’t on there…any other tracks from the era we’re missing? (that we know of)

I’m definitely picking this one up. I examined everything a good few times over, and here’s the write up:

CD ONE: I’ll Do Anything For You and I See Red finally make an appearance. I have no idea if “Where you at now?” is a studio or live cut. There seems to have been a lot of confusion on I’m Falling. It would be odd if the version on disc one is the slower “demo” version that surfaced on Early Trax and not the originally released fast/dance version that was on the first 12”. Ever since Early Trax, the demo was labeled as the original, and the 12” version was labeled as the “alt mix” or “alternative mix”

CD TWO: Here we have the typical 12” remixes as well as the With Sympathy demos that leaked a while back. What’s interesting is the released version of “Same Old Madness” was pulled from this originally (and appears on disc one), so I’m guessing that the version here is different. There is a version that is the same mix, but is a few minutes shorter. My guess is it is that version. The demo for Work For Love isn’t a demo at all, but is the 7” version of the track (previously released on vinyl only in 1983).

The rest of the tracks are the HIGHLIGHT of this box set. “The Game Is Over, Let’s Be Happy and Same Old Scene (Roxy Music cover) are songs that literally no one has heard, not even in bootleg form. “Wait” did leak several years ago, but was stopped in it’s tracks.

CD THREE: This is the same as the 2004 re-release, but finally adds the Benign mix of You Often Forget, making this a complete disc of the first album and it’s 12” singles.

CD FOUR: This is the same as the 2004 re-release, but the live version of PIL was dropped to make everything fit on one disc. PIL does appear as a bonus track on the next disc, so it is included in this box set.

CD FIVE: This is the same as the 2004 re-release, with the tracks appearing in their original running order. The bonus tracks now appear after the album.

CD SIX: The same as the 2004 release “Side Trax”. For many fans, this will be an upgrade, since the very first release was an incorrect mono pressing.

CD SEVEN:Most of these are pulled from various bootlegs. Hopefully they had access to a first generation source. I was really hoping for studio versions for many of these tracks, but I guess this finally confirms that they don’t exist.
“Self Annoyed” is the highlight here. I had not heard of this track prior to this release. “Fish Out of Cold Water” is another new one.

The bonus LP is a soundboard live show recorded in 1982. It was broadcasted on the radio. Cold Life was on the set, but was left off the actual recording.

MISSING TRACKS: This set is not complete, it is missing several tracks. Most of which come from the 3/12/82 show, which is the earliest known live recording. The tracks are “Knowledge”, “The Urge To Runaway”, “Le Stupide” “Funkamental” and “Dancing Alone”. Some of these leaked on youtube and were a pretty big deal at the time. I have no idea why they decided to skip over these. My only guess is they are holding onto these for a future release.

Also missing are “So-So Life” “Do You Even Like It?” and “Ricky’s Hand (Fad Gadget Cover)”. These were performed live in 1983-1984, but all known recordings are not in the best of quality.

Lastly, two songs exist only in “rumor” form. Those are "Hardman (1982) and “Oceanside Away (1984)”. These two songs have yet to emerge.

rdm: thank you so much. you are a great source of knowledge from the era and I appreciate you compiling that, I was trying to put the pieces together but I kept falling apart (getting distracted mainly) .

well, it seems they have enough material not released for another record store day release next year [laugh]

You’re welcome! Glad I could help [:)]

Please be forewarned that sound quality on some of those unreleased tracks won’t necessarily be pristine. They were all sourced from the best generation available, but not all were from Al’s stash. Better to have them in some quality than not have them at all. I haven’t heard the Cleo version, but the ones I have heard are well worth hearing, regardless.

Could any of them be semi-rerecordings, like “I’ll Do Anything For You”?

Yeah, I’m planing on grabbing this. I just don’t see myself trudging to the record store on RSD. How are the others going to get our hands on it?

Do you know anybody at Wax & Facts or Criminal? Maybe they could stash one for you.

I’m guessing no, since that one is now considered one of the “original recordings” on the first disc. I’ve heard most of these over the years and they are either good studio takes or good soundboard recordings from various shows. They won’t sound as good as tracks that they have the master tapes for, but I have no doubt that they will sound better than what’s floating around on youtube or on bootlegs. I was highly impressed with the tweaking and mastering that Cleo did for the 12" singles re-issue, so I have no doubts that these will all sound fantastic.

The only other track I could see being a re-recording is “Self Annoyed”. I’ve never heard of the song until now, so it’s probably coming from Al’s vault.

The only question I have is regarding the With Sympathy demos. There are a couple demos with big differences, then there is the batch that leaked a while back that sound almost identical to the final studio versions. Does anyone know which batch of demos they’re using?

That sucks. My connection at W&F quit and I don’t know the other people there well enough to ask for favors.

I might wander down the street to Mojo Vinyl on Saturday and see if they plan on getting any in. I’ll let you know.

I’m interested in getting this, but I imagine the “remastering” will be a brickwalled limiter/compressor on the mix bus. Too bad Rhino Records isn’t putting this out.

Yeah, people that want this right away should start jockeying now, because with such a price tag I can’t imagine any shop ordering more than one or two. That being said, I really don’t think it will be sold out fast and I suspect it would be available direct pretty soon after.

Nearly everything on Record Store Day sells out fast. Kids line up outside the stores before they open and buy whatever they can grab to put on eBay.

Gross.

This is accurate sadly. The prices usually go down a couple of months later, once the hype dies down. Most records store day releases can still be found easily and at a fair price, you just need to wait it out.

My guess is the bulk of these will be going to places where this stuff sells, like Chicago. I have a few record stores nearby in downtown Columbus and I can almost guarantee that one store will get one copy.

As much as I love this early stuff, I doubt this one is going to fly off the shelves. Most Ministry fans are only mildly interested in the Sire/Warner catalog. In the year 2015, all the hardcore fans are us prongers. I could be wrong.
