Primitive Race

I thought tracks 1 and 4 were pretty dang good, better than stuff off of Pig’s last few albums. Track three has Raymond copping old Foetus with the Videodrome “Long Live the New Flesh” line sung exactly the same tone and cadence as in the Wiseblood song “Where Evil Dwells”. I haven’t heard most the remixes but did check out the Bells Into Machines mix, which was dull.

The Bells Into Machines mix is credited to Brian Diemar, looks like Paul Barker and Chris Connelly had nothing to do with it.

Good. I can finally give Paul and Chris props for something recent.

That’s the PWEI guy on vox, right?
The song’s alright, not great, but the mix is bugging me. The vocals are so up front in the mix.

Eh, not my thing.

I was immediately turned off when the video opens on a residential street. That just screams amateur. They should have started the “following” somewhere else.

What an absolute pile of crap.
It’s not 1988 anymore, fellas.
Take this $5 Betamax video back to Fotomat and shove it up your ass.

Horribly generic song with a horribly generic (Oooh!!! Stock footage of military marches!!! How cutting edge!!!) grade school video.

Thank you Primitive Race, for continuing to set the bar as low as it can go and still managing to slide Eerie Load’s and the rest of your geriatric asses right under it.

But, hey, it’s not like it took them over two year to make it, right? Right?

Worst.
Thing.
Ever.

This is not really anything i would like to listen to repetitively. Long In the Tooth was cool thanks to Pig, but this one is just boring.

Were Pop Will Eat Itself and Gaye Bykers On Acid ever good bands? The weird thing about Primitive Race is that it almost looks like it might actually be a Grebo revival act (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grebo_music), but it’s of course being marketed as an “Industrial” revival act, because that’s the scene that the kids today have heard of.

PWEI are in my top 5 favourite groups of all time. GBOA, not so much.

What are some of the best songs to start with for PWEI?

Actually only two titles comes to my mind: “Ich Bin Ein Auslander” and “Kick to Kill”. I remember i liked them some time ago.
Edit: Or maybe it was Die Krupps cover of “IBeA” that i enjoyed?

The entire Dos Dedos Mis Amigos album is great, but I like most of the PWEI catalog.

‘Mary Byker’ was on a couple of Pigface tours I believe, so with PWEI there’s always been a little bit of an industrial-‘grebo’ cross-pollination.

But as to what makes ‘grebo’ itself a distinct musical style, I have no idea.

I couldn’t name or recognize a single song from either act. I’ve always like Gaye Bykers On Acid ever since reading an interview in Thrasher Magazine with them in the 80’s. But it was strictly due to me liking their name. I knew Mary was in Pigface later, but don’t even know what he did there either. I suspect they were probably terrible. Hooking up with Primitive Race is not evidence of the contrary.

I’m a huge PWEI fan, and rather disappointed with the PR track Graham sings on (the video one - are there more? I’ve no interest in the album) - it sounds like he sent through an audio file of his singing, and then it was just pasted on to the track without any real thought.
If you’re new to PWEI - I’d suggest the 16 Different Flavours Of Hell compilation, which nicely covers material from their three classic albums. If you’re more into the ‘industrial rock’ thing then maybe stick with Dos Dedos Mis Amigos, or the PWEI V2 stuff. I’ve never quite clicked with their new material to be honest, but Watch The Bitch Blow was particularly good. Oh, and there’s a bootleg video from the 1st time I saw them in my home town

Your post reminded me I still needed to comment on this. Curiosity got the best of me, and I did actually go out and buy this album.

Here’s what I wrote about it over at Litany:

I got this last week, and I listened to it once. I’ll give it another listen before I make final judgement, but my first reaction is:

Wow, this is pretty bad.

I only listened to it in my car, so I won’t yet comment on the mix that Username brought up in the other thread. But, it does sound cheap. Most involved are accomplished musicians, so I have to imagine they have decent equipment. So I’m not sure why it sounds so cheap.

And the songs aren’t very good either. I don’t know if they’re going for some early Ebb chant type thing, but the vocals on most of these songs are just cringe worthy. The first Crabbi track “Follow The Leader” is just awful. It’s some kind of teenage rant about the monotony of conformity all the while sounding like some kind of cheerleader pep rally song. Ugh. But at least it stands out. The rest of the songs are so forgettable. Who knew the PIG song would be the high water mark?

Also, it’s not very industrial. I know they came out of the gate saying they were going for #MoreNoiseLessOontz, but they have missed that mark by far. This is more like early 90’s junk alternative bands with “industrial” flourishes like Stabbing Westward or Prick.

I’ll give it one more listen on headphones, but i don’t expect a radical change of experience.

I have listened to it again since, and my opinion didn’t change much.

I don’t know if I’ve ever made this clear or not, but I’m not really sold on this Primitive Race stuff . . .

So Strange:
Even in 1992 that would have sounded bad. It’s like the kid brothers of everyone in Orgy decided to make something 1000 times worse and succeeded tenfold.
Who directed this crap? Oh, never mind. That explains why in addition to being completely unlistenable, there’s some shitty low-rent wannabe porn star sitting in a chair for no reason other than to try and distract you from how terrible this song and video is. Well, that failed too.

Garbage.
F minus minus.
