New Nine Inch Nails coming

I really like Copy of A and Find My Way. Came Back Haunted and Disappointed have some cool sounds and ideas, but they’re just ok. Not bad, not great. I think the new album will be a balance of some great tracks and interesting gems. The only material I’ve been disappointed with is a few songs from the With Teeth and Slip eras, and so far the new one seems very promising.

Surprised at the amount of energy in the little I’ve seen so far. I guess taking some years off from NIN was much needed.

I dunno I think he’s always brought passion to the live show…

The tracks themselves are more Kratfwerk dance-ish where I was hoping for more of a rock album but either way I know it will be solid live.

Considering he released albums and toured almost nonstop for five years straight, I can’t blame him for taking a break. When they announced the original lineup with Belew, I wasn’t really expecting those kind of songs, and more of something along the lines of psychedelia. Can’t complain though. I think Came Back Haunted is weak as shit, but those other three songs are pretty solid.

Nine Inch Nails was the best live show I saw back when. 2000. I was 16. Then it was Radiohead three years later. Faith No More, reunited, years back, is the topper so far. Mostly “old farts” still chugging along, I’m noticing a trend.

So, I’m not so surprised he’s still kicking some ass these days.

I’m imagining those rehearsal sessions with Belew and Avery were fraught with the sort of arguments only industry veterans could have. You don’t walk away from paychecks that big without egos getting seriously bruised. Belew might have wanted to insert copious soloing and left field tones into NIN standards. This is a guy who took orders from Zappa, David Byrne and Robert Fripp for cryin’ out loud. Who knows what Belew wanted - he’s a versatile bassist and NIN songs aren’t first on anyone’s list for virtuous bass parts.

So far the new tunes are nothing but a big ol’ pile of boring. I was hoping for something a bit heavier, more rock oriented, not rejects from Ghosts and How To Destroy Angels.

And Pretty Hate Machine. The new stuff gives me that same pop vibe that PHM has, but mixed in with the more recent stuff he’s been involved with.

Absolutely agreed. I was kinda excited about the new album, having heard all Trent’s bluster about how it would be different this time. As usual for the last few years, it’s just the same as the previous albums. I lost interest after seeing them again in 2005 or so, they were so boring and have bored me since then. I’m seeing them later this month and hope some of the old magic has returned, but on this evidence i won’t be holding my breath.

Old magic are choice keywords this time around, actually. With all the intentional evoking of Downward Spiral themes and imagery the stakes are raised especially high for this album now. Seems like self-sabotage.

I like these new songs. I also really like songs like “Ruiner” and “The Becoming” or really anything from that album that still break through the norms of the established NIN formula is about that seems to be what people cry about all the time on the internet. Deliberately getting people to expect more career defining triumphs seems almost cruel.

I’ll still be at Best Buy before they open 9/3.

Haha, i’ll probably be on the verge of pissing myself with excitement when i get it to be honest, but i’m trying to be calm and rational. I know it won’t be a career-defining set of songs, but i always hope for the best from Trent. He’s rarely delivered that in the last decade, but still, i hope for the best.

I thought Belew was a guitarist, not a bassist.

He is, you’re right. He played on Mr. Self Destruct and The Becoming.

I agree. Seems he went to his electronic dance roots. I feel dance music as a whole was really exhausted in the past decade…

It’s fine but I don’t know why he advertised it as he did because so far he seems to be delivering the exact opposite…a familiar sound that melds ‘The Slip’ and How to Destroy Angels.

Oops, should have proof read my post. Meant Avery. To add to the list of Belew songs he also contributed fantastic guitar parts to “The Great Below”, “Where is Everybody?” and lots of the Ghosts albums. Look forward to what he brings to the new one too.

I WANT BELEW BACK IN TEH BAND SO HE CAN PLAY HAPPINESS IN SLAVURY AND SMASH HIS GUITAR WHILE PLAYING ELEPHUNT TALK!!!

Deluxe edition remixers:
-Oneohtrix Point Never
-Todd Rundgren
-Genesis P-Orridge

I’m not too surprised by OPN, since they (he?) seems pretty en vogue right now. Rundgren is unexpected. I think P-Orridge is pretty hit and miss, but I’m interested to see what he does with NIN. Plus now he just needs a Chris & Cosey remix to complete his Throbbing Gristle collection (and they already have mutual collaborators with Factory Floor, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility).

Studio version of “Copy of A” came out for free for Amazon.uk yesterday:

I like it way more now that I can really hear all of the subtle sounds.

I like it but it’s still new NIN sounding which isn’t really what I want to hear from Trent.
