New Nine Inch Nails coming

A new Nine Inch Nails album is en route and features Atticus Ross (left) alongside Trent Reznor.
Surprise! Nine Inch Nails have a new album that they’re putting out on Columbia later this year.
Trent Reznor admitted that he hasn’t exactly been upfront about NIN’s plans. “I’ve been less than honest about what I’ve really been up to lately,” he said in a press release sent out by the label. “For the last year I’ve been secretly working non-stop with Atticus Ross and Alan Moulder on a new, full-length Nine Inch Nails record, which I am happy to say is finished and frankly f–king great. This is the real impetus and motivation behind the decision to assemble a new band and tour again. My forays into film, How to Destroy Angels and other projects really stimulated me creatively and I decided to focus that energy on taking Nine Inch Nails to a new place. Here we go!”
Notice anything … different? Atticus Ross and Alan Moulder aren’t members of Nine Inch Nails – Ross worked with Reznor on the music for “The Social Network” and “Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” and on Reznor’s side projet, How to Destroy Angels. Moulder is a producer who has worked with the band in the past.
Rob Stringer, Columbia’s chairman, also offered his thoughts: “We are thrilled at Columbia to work with a true renaissance artist like Trent Reznor on the return of Nine Inch Nails and an exciting new chapter of innovative music from them.” Columbia’s already had some fun with album releases this year, as it helped orchestrate the massive information drip that had Daft Punk fans in a frenzy by the time “Random Access Memories” was released (er, leaked).

Nine Inch Nails last released an album in 2008, when they dropped both “Ghosts I-IV” and “The Slip,” both of which charted reasonably well around the world. Since then, Reznor [url “http://consequenceofsound.net/2013/02/trent-reznor-relaunches-nine-inch-nails-with-new-lineup-extensive-tour-planned/”]announced some line-up changes and a tour. They have not had a Billboard No. 1 album since 2005’s “With Teeth.” The album which preceded “Teeth,” “The Fragile,” came out in 1999 and also reached No. 1, so perhaps the five years between this album and “The Slip” is a good sign.

I’m thinking this can be really good, perhaps his best NIN stuff post Fragile.

Jesus fuck, why are my pants getting tighter?

It’s about time!

VERY excited about this news.

i still miss the analog sound :P. i hate this shitty macbook sound that’s been in everything for the past…long time.

Very disappointed to see him back on a major label.

Very disappointed to see him back on a major label.

Agreed.

  1. He has enough money and wherewithal to do everything on his own (which is how he did the last NIN album and everything since, except for the newest How To Destroy Angels);

  2. If he thinks anyone at that diseased corporation has changed their attitudes towards A&R, artist representation, and stylistic freedom, he’s in for a HUGE let-down. All major labels are partying like it’s 1999.

I’m guessing going independent didn’t work out the way he wanted it. I thought it was weird for the HTDA album to come out on a label, but as well. I’d imagine Trent got a good deal with them. If he went back to Interscope, that would’ve been something else…

I’m pretty excited! I don’t mind that he’s back on a major label. Considering that he has a healthy marriage and two kids, it makes sense wanting to spend less time managing/financing/marketing/running a label and more time spent with the family.

I personally don’t give a shit if he’s on a major label at this point in his career. I don’t run the band or the brand so I don’t know the numbers or what’s worked best. But what I do know is that he’s honestly never done anything that’s seemed insincere or just to make a quick buck.

If he wanted to compromise his music for a major label he would’ve done so a looong time ago. There would be no “Fragile” or possibly even TDS.

Elaborate on “analog sound” because I’m betting you don’t know what the fuck you’re actually talking about. I’m betting you wouldn’t be able to tell whether I mastered an album on a console or through a macbook.

New album = Yay
Belew isn’t touring anymore = Boo!

I was pretty pumped when I heard about the new tour line up, because of Eric Avery and Adrian Belew. When Avery dropped out, I was a bit disappointed. Now that Belew is out, I’m out as well. That “totally revamped” live sound seems dubious at best at this point.

they probably let him do whatever the fuck he wants. although i agree. he used to talk shit about the major labels and now he willing goes back to them on his own volition. what a sellout.

Even though Reznor has lost his angst (edge or whatever the fuck you wanna call it) and toned it down on the emo’ness, I kinda dig the current sound. Year Zero and The Slip are really good, I still play them regularly.

This is gonna be some good shit i can promise you that.

does anyone else not want to go through the effort of seeing a show on this tour?

i still dig NIN, the very first “big” show i went to was them w/manson/hole. And even though their last two records weren’t my thing, I wouldn’t mind seeing them live because DAT LIVESHOW.

but as far as trying to camp a website for access to tickets at a huge venue where i can’t see anything and the tix sell out in 3 minutes and all the fanclub assholes got them first and we’re only playing 90minutes north/south of you blahblahblah.

fuck it.

I’ve seen them five or six times.
I’m good on skipping it this time around.

Belew left also? When did that happen? More NIN the merrier though.

I didn’t know Belew left either…Avery and Belew were the only reasons I was even remotely interested…

I hope the new album isn’t a return to the ‘With Teeth’ sound.

That album was horrible !

With all the jaded attitudes abounding here (and no doubt elsewhere), it’s a wonder someone like Trent even bothers trying to continue with NIN.

Don’t you think he knows what will work better for him at this point?
