i love his voice, and i like most of the things he’s done…but he seems like a self righteous pompous prick…or maybe that’s all an act? who knows. i don’t really care.
I hate Tool, though I really don’t mind Maynard’s voice.
But he’s in Tool so he should probably drop dead.
I don’t care if he’s an arrogant prick (he probably is). I don’t need to hang out with him so who cares? He does seem like a strong frontman who understands professional showmanship.
But again, he is in Tool, so . . . yeah, drop dead.
His name is totally lame too. Maynard? That name gets your ass kicked in school. No wonder he’s a douchebag.
I think it’s easy to be neutral on the guy, too. His three bands have all put out some great-to-good releases. This cult of personality that surrounds him is I think a result of the anti-rockstar persona he’s projected since even the early days of Tool. Makes me wonder if he’d be where he’s at today if he wasn’t so elusive onstage and in the press. So maybe the farcical aspects of Puscifer shed some insight on how he perceives the admiration he gets?
Anyone who’s ever and currently admired his music should give “Blood Into Wine” a viewing. Shows him to be not only good humored but pretty down to earth about his achievements and status as a rockstar.
I think paying triple digits for a Tool show and barely being able to see him on stage is a load of bullshit when his voice/lyrics are to many fans as much a draw as the music. So there’s that extreme side of his antics that irritate me. Then there’s his involvement with many comedians and staying true to his artistic muse with Puscifer that gives me a lot of goodwill towards the guy.
I like Maynard’s voice, very unique. I’m a fan of Tool, but they seem to get a lot of praise from dumb metal heads for being innovative. The “progressive” style is as old as free form Jazz.
Mer De Noms > Tool
^This.
I find Tool as a whole have a few really good songs on each album. I could take the 5 Tool cds and make 1 really good one.
Don’t know much about Maynard personally though.
Gunnar has a good point about his name though, kinda like Rudiger. Gets you beat up and stuff.
I just saw Tool last week (not my first time, and I’m a big fan), and something struck me about halfway through the show: Maynard James Keenan is the weakest link in this great band’s chain. Now, don’t get me wrong - he’s an amazing vocalist, he’s got a great range, and I love his lyrics, which often work on more than one level (something I rarely hear in music these days; Mike Patton’s work with Faith No More - which he claims is based on random assemblage of sounds, a lie - is another example of this). But compared to the other musicians pulling weight onstage with him, he just doesn’t compare. Consider: the amazing polyrhythmic drumming of Danny Carey, the truly innovative and mind-blowing guitar playing from Adam Jones, and the propulsive bass riffing provided by Justin Chancellor.
Compounding this theory is Keenan’s work with other bands, which I find to be less-than-stellar. Sure, I drooled when he started A Perfect Circle, but they’re not that good - Billy Howerdel is an unintriguing Svengali and Maynard’s vocals just can’t compensate for that. As for Puscifer… well, good idea, terrible execution. I couldn’t wait for the first Puscifer album, and when I finally heard it, I was somewhat appalled. Trip-hop beats and throaty scat-singing? Really? That’s the best the writer of “Rosetta Stoned” and “Hooker With A Penis” could manage?
So, to put it simply: MJK is a talented musician, but his sun shines brightest in a sky full of equally brilliant stars.

Totally agree. However, I think the title track to Aenema is worth the other bullshit tracks you have to wade through to get to that song.
Late,
grmpysmrf
saw them twice. second time they left the stage for like 20 minutes and there was a laser light show. that sucked ass. fuck tool.

Gunnar is the new Grmpysmrf. Everytime a band/artist who is a bit more experimental or challenging or arty than the average rock/metal act is discussed on this forum, Gunnar chimes in with his oh so typical “it sucks / it’s for douchebags / I don’t get it / it’s too weird”.
Maybe he’d feel more at home in a Megadeth forum.
I for one love Tool. If push came to shove I’d say they were my favourite act of all time. I think Maynard is one of the most charismatic, articulate, mysterious and downright interesting frontmen ever. The way he fucks with the minds of the average Tool fan (mostly made up of ignorant idiots I must admit) is genius. His lyrics are unmatched by any other.
I’ve seen them three times in concert and each time was more mindlblowing than the last. I think the triumvirate of Aenima / Latreralus and 10,000 Days are almost perfect. There hasn’t been anything like those three albums in the history of rock music and I seriously doubt there ever will be.

I’m not Grmpysmrf. I just happen to be another poster that is smarter than you. I know how to follow a topic. Here, let me review the thread-starter’s directive for you, since you failed to grasp the complexity of it.
Please feel free to discuss how much you love/loathe him or how much of a genius he is/isn’t.

I sling mud.
You jerk off profusely.
Now quit crying like an emo sissy. I don’t hate Tool for being experimental. I hate them for being boring. And I hate their fans because they are whiney nerds.
Thanks for proving my theory, Jackass.

Wherever crybaby putzes get butthurt because I insult their taste in music I feel perfectly at home. Why would I go to a Megadeth site and read a bunch of posts telling me what I already know (that Megadeth rules) when I can come here and amuse myself by kicking sand in the nerds’ faces?

OMG UR A FANBOI 2??? Wow. There’s a shocker.
Again, Kiddo, all you did here is give a further galvanizing to my opinion that Tool fans are emo sissies.
You’re music sucks and you’re a crybaby.
Any questions?

They find that mind blowing because most metal heads are just as bad as rap and country fans. They’re too closed minded to try new things.
The albums are good, but Tool isn’t the first band to take a style and make it progressive or experimental. Nor are they the first group to use up all the space on whatever the current physical media can hold. Tool is a good band, but very boring compared to other progressive acts. I mean come on, Pink Floyd, Dream Theater, King Crimson…

I hear that you did something similar to that over at the Avalanchers forum. Some of the “crybabies” over there are actually still in therapy.
Don’t mess with Gunnar he has friends in high places. He once had his picture taken with the Osbournes.
Gunnar did you know that members of Sunn O))) are in hiding due to the pasting you gave them a few days ago.
They won’t be troubling us with their brand of bowel shaking, earth moving, sinister as all fuck drone doom anytime soon.

Thanks, I’m glad to hear it.
I’m just trying to make the world a better place.
Just my two cents.
Maynard’s not a fuckhead. Watching him and the rest of the boys from the first EP to what they’re doing now has been an interesting progression. Going from that slam and bang insouciance to the psylocibin induced bowel shaking joy trip isn’t something many other bands can be noted for… I think.
Anyway, I think he’s pretty cogniscant of the rock star mystique and just toys with it. Likes a bit of fun the old boy, so why not?
Tool are a yawnfest.
Crap.
