Marilyn Manson 'Born Villain'

lol Marilyn Manson is using fake drums now? Why are people regressing back to production techniques circa WaxTrax era? They’re doing it, Ministry’s doing it…it doesn’t have to be Neil Peart but…

Well, even in the WaxTrax era you had Bill Rieflin on half the records.

I think the reason people do it is because it’s cheap and easy. Program the drums, you don’t have to spend time and money on a real guy. Personally, I only think it works when on dance/industrial tracks when the percussion is supposed to sound robotic, or on novelty-type songs like early They Might Be Giants.

Of course, Chris Vrenna is a professional drummer, so I don’t know what Manson’s excuse is.

What manson album has completely live drums? None. Every album has drum programming to some extent. I most of Holy Wood was programmed. Ginger Fish programmed a few though. With manson, it’s always been preference I guess. If I recall, I’m pretty sure all of the drums on Antichrist Superstar were programmed also. No problem with drum machines as long as they don’t sound cheap (jourgensen).

The sound of classic Manson albums is a mixture of live and programmed drums. Since 'EAT ME DRINK ME, it has been completely programmed drumming and I think the sound has suffered…

All I’m saying is when it’s supposed to sound robotic, yes by all means make it a drum machine or a synthetic programmed drum. But for the parts where they are trying to emulate real drums, just use real drums!

And Chris Vrenna is likely the one behind this, combined with a likely scale-back in budget on these albums since they’re all done in home studios of the band members now. Vrenna did a recent interview talking about how he programmed all of the drums on the 2 Manson albums he did because he could make them sound so real, there was no point in using real drums.

I disagree. It could just be the way he mixed them though…that could very likely be my real gripe here.

the album is a big boring bunch of yawn. i wasnt hoping for anything super great (aka the stuff they were hyping it with), but this is exactly what i kind of expected … uh… what can i say… ua a a ua a a a

the cover image is lame too

this is cheaper than a drummer…

The You’re So Vain cover sucks.

I’d imagine there’s no drummer due to royalties and who gets paid what. It’s all percentage, I think. According to Sascha K., the more you do, the more you make. So without a drummer taking their cut, it’s more for them.

Not as good as the original but it beats the hell out of Faster Pussycat’s version.

He actually sounds slightly like Taime…

Going to listen to this with extreme apprehension. Nothing Manson’s recorded since Golden Age has interested me in the slightest and Skold’s departure + Pogo’s exit and the lawsuits made me lose the little interest I had in the band’s musical endeavors. All this talk about it being post-punk influenced has gotten my hopes up.

My biggest problem with post-Golden Age is the drop in lyrical quality. For all his showmanship and pretention, POAAF is full of snarky social commentary that holds up well today. He continued to have an excellent command of lyricism for a long time. Can anyone comment on the quality on this album?

Some people call it a return to form. I don’t. Some of it, maybe. Most of it isn’t. He’s still whining about romance, etc. in a few of the songs. Thankfully, not all. It has a few cool songs in there. But, for the most part, it’s just another THEOL. I’m trying to get into it, hoping it’ll grow on me. But, i’m doubtful.

I actually thought the cover song wasn’t so bad. I’ve certainly heard worse but…

The mix on “You’re So Vain” kind of crappy, and also obviously not mixed by whoever did the rest of the album (Vrenna?). But I like it a lot otherwise. I think it’s one of the better covers he’s done actually.

Eh, all his covers are exactly like the original but louder (with the exception of a couple of acoustic b-sides). It was a novelty with Sweet Dreams, but the formula’s gotten really stale.

Not so. Marilyn Mansons cover of Tainted Love was just a cover of a cover done by Soft Cell. Gloria Jones did it first. See my what are you listening to now posts.

I don’t agree either. his cover of I put a spell on you is fuckin awesome!!
Late,

Down In The Park.

Golden Years was pretty fun too.

While it is totally is in line with what the Rev said above. I love his version of Rock n Roll Nigger.
