wanna talk about creative/original hip hop? SAUL WILLIAMS!
Or even KRS One bitches [cool]
KRS played here in Edinburgh a few weeks back and blew shit up.
Don’t forget the awesome-ness of…
Aceyalone!!!
Freestyle Fellowship
Schoolly D
Kool G Rap & DJ Polo
BDP
Marley Marl
DJ Premier
Roots Manuva
Skitz
Edan
Anti-Pop Consortium
DJ Vadim
Cold Cut…and a million other true Hippity Hoppers!!!
So I went into HMV the other day and all the covers of this album were a completely different, censored version, not the cool one posted above. Even on the deluxe editions! Is the cover convertible or something once you get it out of the packaging, or was the real cover actually too controversial to sell in stores?
[reply]
no but seriously…there is NOTHING original or remotely creative (imo) about Kayne West.
Of course there is.
wanna talk about creative/original hip hop? SAUL WILLIAMS!
Saul Williams rules!!!
But the question is were you a Saul Williams fan before or after Trent Reznor co-produced his last album?
I bet if Trent Reznor co-produced this new Kanye album you’d all be creaming your pants over it! HAHAHAHA!!!
Personally I’ve been listening to Saul Williams since around 99 after hearing his Twice The First Time tune on the Ninja Tune Xen Cuts compilation…I creamed my pants over his first album Amethyst Rockstar…I LOVED his books to bits from Seventh Octave right through to Dead Emcee Scrolls and went absolutely bananas over his self titled album which dropped in 2004…I dreaded hearing that Trent Reznor would be involved in his 2007 album and thought it was easily his weakest. At least a ton of NIN fans jumped on the Saul Williams bandwagon as a result of Trent though as Saul deserves to make some money.
Anyway back to Kanye…I bought the cd on the way home and have put it on my ipod…I will blast it on the way to work and report back.[/reply]
maybe i would enjoy kayne if trent was involved…but if i did, it’s become i enjoy trent’s work. and yes, i did hear about saul through trent. anything wrong with that?
i haven’t heard his new cd. from the little i’ve heard he sounds like all the other overproduced crap that plays on the radio. what makes him original? what makes him creative?

There’s nothing wrong with it, but I think Akbar was making a point of all the NIN emo kids getting gay for Saul because of Trent and not because they are into hip hop or know anything about the genre.
Personally, I don’t give much of a rat’s ass about Saul or Kanye’s music and I’m not really into hip hop, but I can admit when something sounds cool or interesting or unique and I really don’t care if something is an MTV hit or some underground hipster dealio.
I like a lot of songs that would make people on this forum blush (but haven’t actually purchased any albums by any of them).
Lady Gaga, Mary J. Blige, DMX, Gwen Stefani, 3-Six Mafia, Blue October (actually, I bought a couple CD’s for this one).
I understand if someone doesn’t connect with a certain artist or genre, but I find it hilarious when someone tries to discuss something mainstream on a metal or punk or industrial chat board and people come unglued.

Well you talked about “creative/original” Hip Hop and it happened to be some dude who was involved with Industrial Metal Pop icon Trent Reznor…so I assumed you only bought Saul up due to Trent co-producing his album…and I was correct.
Are there any other Hip Hop artists you dig apart from Saul??? Just curious and no there’s nothing wrong with being into Saul courtesy of Trent… I think it’s great Saul has got a bit more recognition as a result of his work with Trent.
As I said earlier I think Saul’s album with Trent is his weakest. I think it has some great stuff on it but I think his first two albums leave it in the dust lyrically & musically. In saying that Saul Williams thinks Niggy Tardust is his best album to date and is that first recording to turn out how he wanted it to, sound wise and production wise. There were actually 4 people involved in producing Niggy Tardust…Williams, Reznor, Thavius Beck & CX KiDTRONIK.

He creates music…that makes him creative. As for original… there’s not too much out there in the music world in this day and age that’s original.

That’s a bold statement for someone to make when their forum name is based around, I’m guessing, Raymond Watts whose blatant theft of Foetus musical ideas and lyrics fueled every good piece of work that he did.
Listen to “Power” and give me examples of what else it sounds like. Tell me that the 2 minute vocoder breakdown on “Runaway” sounds like all the other pop hip hop out there and I’ll suggest you get your ears checked. =)
Outside of Trent I don’t think anyone working in industrial is doing anything half so innovative as Kanye right now. If anyone has examples of people working in the genre who are, let me know!
Everything good currently coming out of the “industrial” genre isn’t actually industrial, it’s Witch House.
Well I picked up the cd this arvo after buying it from HMV. I noticed that there was no promotion for this at all? Not in the front displays like the other new releases that will sell in the millions. I guess it’s down to the unusual cover art?
I will need to listen to this one a few more times to do it justice I believe. He has numerous big names on it such as RZA & Q-Tip. The production is good and definately a bit different to your usual mainstream pop/rap’r’n’b album.
I found Kanye’s lyrics on it quite funny actually…the guy definately doesn’t take himself too seriously…my fave lyric was this line…“I don’t need your pussy bitch I’m on my own dick”…I also came to the conclusion that the cd wasn’t on the front displays due to the profound lyrics throughout the album???
Anyway from first listen it’s interesting to say the least.

no i don’t like to hip hop at all…other than in a joking manner sometimes.
i don’t like the album because of trent’s involvement, i like it because i think it’s good. i gave it a listen because i heard trent was producing it, yes, but that certainly doesn’t mean i liked it solely because of his involvement.
i’ve heard some of his earlier tracks and i dig them too. i like what he has to say.
mhmm, either way, definitely not a fan of kayne west

When I say hey you say ho!
Ho!
Yes, the lyrics are pretty damned funny! I also enjoy the destined to be controversial lyric “I treat cash like the government treats AIDS, I won’t stop until all my niggaz get it!”
Plus Chris Rock’s “When I see Yeezy, I’m gonna thank him. I’m gonna buy his album, I’m gonna download that motherfucker, I’m gonna shoot a bootlegger!”
Outside of Trent I don’t think anyone working in industrial is doing anything half so innovative as Kanye right now.
Trent is the last man standing in a genre that died a long time ago. The reason Trent is still standing is due to evolving…something the genre never did imo.

raymond definitely borrowed elements from foetus (toured with them for a bit) he even said foetus was the reason he started writing music again…but they have very different and distinct sounds.
i guess i’m not informed enough to make an opinion of kayne…i’ve only heard like…2-3 songs? just not my cup of tea.
i’ve heard some of his earlier tracks and i dig them too. i like what he has to say.
Yeah his words are pretty amazing. You should try score his first few books Seventh Octave & S/he. Most of the early lyrics come from those two bad-boys.
He also starred in and co-wrote the award winning film Slam in 1998 which is brilliant. Oh and he was also Ernie in K-Pax which was his first “big” film role.
There’s some brilliant Hip Hop out there…most of my fave records happen to be Hip Hop actually. In particular folk like Aceyalone, Edan and old skool cats like Schoolly D and Marley Marl to name a few.
It really is sad that this guy gets so much attention. He is just an average producer just riding the waves. The dude probably didn’t even know what the hell an 808 was till he was getting his dick sucked in some storage room at roc-a-fella.
In regards to the nin comparison. If you can honestly deny that songs like The day the world went away, and all the could have been or in this twilight as being above kanyes production level then it’s a lost cause.
Witch House isn’t living up to its potential yet.
And the trend of these Witch House guys to “remix” a song by slowing it way down is stupid. Playing a 45 on 33 is not a “remix”.

Most Witch House is pretty poopy but the new Salem album is great!
[reply]Wow. Everytime I think I’m on top of all the stupid genre names I hear of a new one . . .
Witch House??? Oh, brother . . .
The last two I came across that killed me were Power Violence and [drumroll please] PORNGRIND. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
HAHAHA! porngrind… [/reply]
I know this may sound hard to believe, but it is HORRIBLE. Seriously, by far the WORST singular genre I’ve come across so far. That being said, you can amuse yourself for quite a while just reading the disgustingly attrocious band names and song titles.
I mean, who wouldn’t want to hear “Raped by Elephants” off of Torsofuck’s classic album “Erotic Diarrhea Fantasy”?
I know, you think I’m being a smartass and making up all of the above . . . but you’d be 100% wrong.
EDIT: And just in case you were thinking of naming your own band Spermswamp, don’t. It’s already taken. Ferrealz, yo!
