Here We Go Again.....Another School Shooting

WEEEE!!

Have the talking heads touched on the fact that there is no mental health care for insane people in this country since the 70s or are we still on gun control, video games, and crucifying the psycho’s parents??

(I am in favor of gun control as well for the record)

I haven’t been watching the news - and can’t be bothered to turn on a TV for anything other than Chicago Blackhawks hockey - but I can almost guarantee that they aren’t touching on the “insanity” angle.

And they sure as hell will not be calling into question the pharmaceutical industry, and its tendency to throw a cocktail of drugs at even the most natural of, cough, “disorders” (sadness, anger, etc.), a process which often amplifies the anxieties that our many spree killers are wracked with.

This is an ‘x’ factor that has gone almost unmentioned by the talking heads and the hand-wringing over American gun culture. Look up the Wikipedia page for any of them from Adam Lanza (Sandy Hook) all the way back to the Columbine kids, and you will be greeted by a shopping list of ‘meds’ that they had been prescribed as a panacea for problems that could have been dealt with in other ways.

Spot on. Pretty sure that was a big talking point in this thread during Sandy Hook and you know it won’t be brought up yet again.

And, I am not in favor of gun control.

P.S. The guy’s video is really douche chilling, he doesn’t realize his whole “nice guy” thing is…I think a lot of us have been there. I was a nice guy once. I got fucked around on by women though and, well, now I know how to handle myself. [laugh] Too bad he didn’t fathom irony.

This whole country is so fucked on health care reform. Forget the whole Obamacare thing, drop in the bucket when it comes to focus on how the truly mentally deranged need better treatment. Word has it this kid is, much like the V. Tech killer, that they knew he was nuts but did “everything they could” to make sure he was looked into.

So what’s the solution?

Somebody got to you.

Who was it? Who got to you, Chauncey? Who hurt you?

These are not the sorts of things one should carry around and keep to one’s self. Mental scars. They breed hurt.

They breed hurt, Chauncey.

I don’t know anything about Isla Vista but it doesn’t have jack on Detoilet, err Detroit. There was any amusing article in AP about all the car jackings in the city - http://news.yahoo.com/detroit-motorists-under-siege-carjack-city-043049027--finance.html

Watched a show on tv last night. Think it was called “Unplanned America” or something. About three Aussie guys who drive across the highways of America. Sort of “uncovering the hidden, backstreets of the USA” kind of deal.

And it was…boy, words fail me. We just don’t have that level of poverty over here. At least…not quite on that scale. The part where they drove through Detroit was mind blowing. It was like one of them “future earth” type scenarios where civilisation has “disappeared” or been wiped out and only a few humans are left to scour the wastelands (and then enter bit about zombie apocalypse or alien infestation or something). Just incredible.

Not hard to see why there is so much death/devastation/despair over there.

And not hard to see why Australia is called “the lucky country”.

Hate to rub it in, but…

It’s their own fault. if they weren’t so lazy. Ya’ know, that old thing.

Well, Detroit’s an outlier. It’s like using Chernobyl to represent Ukraine.

I’m always skeptical about the motives behind the “foreign journalists unveil the ‘real America’” type of documentaries, as well. This kind of programming always seems to increase when the powers-that-be sense some discontent locally, and need to distract attention towards some other place that just about everyone can agree is fucked beyond repair.

I saw a lot of that in Japan; there is a special type of travel documentary show there called a “yarase” which masquerades as a “reality show” but is totally scripted and acted. These shows always feature some heavy-handed moral about how “things may seem bad in Japan, but it’s still the best place on earth.”

Invariably, the Japanese journalists will visit an otherwise attractive foreign destination but then have to endure a living hell of rejection by the locals, getting stranded, breaking down in tears etc. There was in fact one really hilarious episode shot in Australia, where the crew has to put their lives in the hands of some cult leader who has the power to talk to snakes, lol…

Every time i hear about Detroit i think of Kentucky Fried Movie, the Enter The Dragon pisstake “A Fistful Of Yen”.

Dr. Klahn: The CIA thinks they can infiltrate the Mountain of Dr. Klahn!
CIA Agent: You can’t scare me, you slant-eyed yellow bastard.
Dr. Klahn: Take him to… Detroit!
CIA Agent: No! No, not Detroit! No! No, please! Anything but that! No! No!

Downtown and Midtown Detroit are positively booming. Money, people all around, life. I never thought I’d see that in my life time.

By the time I left Chicago there were also some developments that I never thought would have happened…I knew things were changing when I saw a Seattle’s Best coffee shop smack in the middle of the soon to be demolished Cabrini Green housing projects (for industrial music fans, Warzone Studios was also very close to here.)

While the city loves to paint that as an overall improvement in quality of life, though, it merely indicated a transfer of extreme poverty from the inner city to the near suburbs, and more wealthy people moving from the suburbs into the inner city.

I see some kid shot his parents and sister dead in California the other day too. Apparently they were very straitlaced and religious, but he killed them with a shotgun for some reason and then killed himself.

need guns to stand up to the government…?

They shot unarmed kids at kent state, nobody did anything…

If the state murders your kids and you don’t rise up and deal them some like for like… then when will you? Never, it’s fantasy. And even if you did, your ewok level insurgency would be droned in ten seconds

The guns are like religion… when it was hard life on the frontiers, they probably had some role in the fabric of society… but now they cause more problems than they solve.

But snooty Europeans need to back off a bit… you couldn’t just enact UK style gun laws in the US tomorrow, it wouldn’t necessarily work

I have no idea what the solution is but the denial over the issue definitely isn’t helping

Thumbs up

Speaking as someone who occasionally goes to gun shows - sometimes for ‘journalistic experience’, sometimes just to check out guns - I have talked to very few people entertaining the delusion that they can overtake the most sophisticated death machine that the world has ever known.

It’s a common misconception that “gun folks” really take such an optimistic tack. People who do go around loudly claiming on the Internet that “now is the time” for a violent revolution are, IMHO, probably agent provocateurs.

I run into a lot of fatalists, in fact, who merely want to die honorably in a “SHTF” scenario rather than get dragged off to some stinking prison where they will be held incommunicado forever (yes this type of detention is allowed under the National Defense Auhtorization Act of 2012.)

As for being “droned in ten seconds,” well - that is ultimately up to the military personnel themselves. They will have the final decision whether or not to turn their weapons on a huge portion of their own people. Yes, plenty of precedents for that exist already, but let’s just admit for now that neither of us know exactly how the winds will blow in such a crisis situation.

Why do I have to ignore the precedents?

Seems to me like sidestepping an inconvenient fact

I really do hope you’re right, but…

Anyone seen a little film called “Red Dawn” (1985)? We need all the guns we can get if we wanna keep those damn commie Russians from taking over Omaha.

Or what about “Tremors”? Do you think they could have stopped the Graboids if they didn’t have Stephen Keaton’s massive stockpile of firepower?

Just sayin’ . . . Guns keep us protected from Commies and Graboids and I’ll be damned if I let either of them get their hands (or tongues) on me!

I never asked you to ignore anything.

All I’m saying is you should consider the possible differences in attitude that the military might entertain when the scale of any potential protest increases dramatically, and especially when the ‘profile’ of protesters / insurrectionaries can’t be limited to a single group (e.g. ‘wacko cultists’, dirty hippies’ etc.) which is easily smeared by official propaganda.

lol Red Dawn… awful but great

it was written by hardcore wingnut john milius

weirdly he wrote conan the barbarian, and that was screenwritten by arch lefty oliver stone. I’m guessing they didn’t share a cubicle

you can take that one to the bank
