'Classic' bands/artists that you don't like

I pretty much agree with Fish; there’s bands I like and bands I don’t, and normally with the bands that I don’t like that get a lot of critical praise I can at least understand/admire their contributions. I’ve tried, and failed, to get into Led Zeppelin, but I can still hear their influence on bands that I do like (Jane’s Addiction in particular).

However, what really prompts me to respond is:

Aphex Twin… he has the nerve to rip off everything from Squarepusher to Brian Eno to Eric Satie.

I don’t mind people not liking Aphex Twin, but I never understood the people who insisted that he was ripping off people like Squarepusher or Autechre. I mean, Aphex Twin was releasing material 4 years prior to Squarepusher’s debut (which was on Aphex Twin’s label). And all three of them had their first “glitchy” IDM (whatever) album come out within months of each other in '95 (of which “I Care Because You Do” was the first). After listening to Aphex Twin for years, I was completely underwhelmed with the others when I finally heard them. I suppose it’s a matter of who you hear first. Maybe?

I am literally bored to death with hearing how ‘brilliant’ and how ‘out there’ the guy is.

Insert joke about misuse of word “literally.”

I suggest you check out early Misfits (Static Age, Legacy Of Brutality) and then get back to me about how much it ‘shits’ you.

I’ve heard all that before and I still really don’t like the Misfits. It’s not terrible by any means, I’d surely prefer listening to them than many other acts, but I really don’t see what the big deal is. For it’s time I’m sure it sounded edgy as all hell, but even then how far of a stretch was it musically from the Ramones?

I guess I’m just jaded about punk rock though. It seems to me that the older punk generation have replaced the old-fart 70’s rockers as the “back in my day” nostalgic wankers.

Jesu.

LOL.

I must admit that i’m not a fan either. REVCO pointed me/us to a DIME listing. I grabbed it and listened to it, and, to be honest - it reminded me of early cure mixed with “time to melt”. I like the cure but his stuff just didn’t do it for me

Misfits, Ramones, and Sex Pistols.
Too much “FUCK YOU”, not enough GROOVE.
Also, in response to Dream Theater, I can see why. I love 'em… but they are an acquired taste. Unneccessarily long, progressively more and more obnoxious synth-rock takes some getting used to.

You guys are fags! The Sex Pistols rules. [:)]

It’s a possibility… either way.

I see someone beat me to Kiss.

Good for you.

I see someone beat me to Kiss.

Good for you.

But they’re not really ‘critics darlings’ though are they, which was kinda the point of the thread. I was talking about artists like Beck or Radiohead that I believed were overpraised and over hyped.

But anyway, yeah, Kiss are pretty naff. The early 70s output was kinda ok, late 70’s was…hmmmm, actually don’t mind their pop/disco period, anything after 1982 is excruciating.

The most over rated metal band of all time:

Opeth

Good for you.

Seconded.
And I’ll raise you an Elvis.

Totally agree with the Radiohead thing, also any Jam bands especially ones that play mainly bluegrass…god damn dirty hippies.

man oh man. i love you guys.
raise me an elvis?
nobody needs jam bands. (unless you’re wearing cutoffs, and some other horrible sidekick to the cutoffs)
there’s a lot to be said about style.

The most over rated metal band of all time:

Opeth

yes! yes! yes! utter bollocks they are!

I agree about Opeth, although I do have to admit that they were really good live the two times I saw them.

yeah slayer’s pretty boring. they got the grammy because they’ve been around forever.
(omigod,give them a prize already)
the susan lucci’s of metal.

Zepplin, Clapton, Pink Floyd : Are they all dead yet? They sure act like it onstage.

i give led zeppelin a lot of credit.
even though the individuals i can take or leave.
that’s standard when you deal with bands.
can’t listen to them anymore, but their influence, it continues.
i don’T know now, but did they ever sign off on a car commercial, or like iggy pop with lust for life and cruises?
can’t stand that song anymore.

Agree (kinda) on the Slayer mention. Yes, they ARE overrated - but they have had their moments (god Hates Us All). The new material is a bore, virtually nothing new added to the mix there. Same old anti war, anti religion ho hum mish mash of sterile cliches and two hundred notes per hour guitar guitar solos that they’ve been spewing out for twenty five years.

And Manson - dunno. Is he even critically lauded?? I don’t know if I’d even consider him worthy enough of even mentioning. Pop metal goth trash. Packaged rebellion for bored, cluelessmall rats. Wave your fist in the air and stick it to the man, yeah!!! Right on. Whatever.

Personally I’d find Avril Lavigne more threatening.

Lavigne’s cover of Metallica’s Fuel

shes also done chop suey…fuckin awful

hey jizzwad, tony hawk did a lot for pailhead.
