I feel I need to drop my two cents about some bands mentioned earlier:
Echo And The Bunnymen - well, I do like the album “Heaven Up Here”, but the rest is indeed not particularly impressive.
Husker Du - I like how they are able to make their abrasive music sound catchy.
Nine Inch Nails - not really impressive from the point of view of experimental/ambitious music but really impressive IMO as an innovative pop/rock band. I have a soft spot for music that is catchy in a conventional way but still manages to be unique.
Tool - to be honest, I only like the album “Lateralus” and this might just be because it tickles my ‘metal bone’. The album is really original and unique as a metal album. The rest of their stuff is mediocre to me.
And now, after some more thought, some more ‘classic’ bands that I dont get:
Pearl Jam - first album is kinda ok, but otherwise this just seems like a derivative retro band. I really dont understand what people see in them.
Guns n Roses - I never got what people saw in them. Once again, so many other bands from the time did this kind of thing far better.
Dream Theater - a bunch of music academy dropouts wanking on stage. I never got what people saw in this kind of music.
Birthday Party - I find their stuff basically unlistenable, and its not like I am against noisy and chaotic music, I just could never get into their brand of this kind of stuff. I finally caught up with Nick Cave when his music became softer and started incorporating more of the storytelling kind of lyrics.
Frontline Assembly - save for 3-4 decent songs, this band is just pure boredom.
Needless to say, there are MANY bands out there that are getting a lot of praise from people; however, most of them arent even worth mentioning.
