'Classic' bands/artists that you don't like

I feel I need to drop my two cents about some bands mentioned earlier:

Echo And The Bunnymen - well, I do like the album “Heaven Up Here”, but the rest is indeed not particularly impressive.

Husker Du - I like how they are able to make their abrasive music sound catchy.

Nine Inch Nails - not really impressive from the point of view of experimental/ambitious music but really impressive IMO as an innovative pop/rock band. I have a soft spot for music that is catchy in a conventional way but still manages to be unique.

Tool - to be honest, I only like the album “Lateralus” and this might just be because it tickles my ‘metal bone’. The album is really original and unique as a metal album. The rest of their stuff is mediocre to me.

And now, after some more thought, some more ‘classic’ bands that I dont get:

Pearl Jam - first album is kinda ok, but otherwise this just seems like a derivative retro band. I really dont understand what people see in them.

Guns n Roses - I never got what people saw in them. Once again, so many other bands from the time did this kind of thing far better.

Dream Theater - a bunch of music academy dropouts wanking on stage. I never got what people saw in this kind of music.

Birthday Party - I find their stuff basically unlistenable, and its not like I am against noisy and chaotic music, I just could never get into their brand of this kind of stuff. I finally caught up with Nick Cave when his music became softer and started incorporating more of the storytelling kind of lyrics.

Frontline Assembly - save for 3-4 decent songs, this band is just pure boredom.

Needless to say, there are MANY bands out there that are getting a lot of praise from people; however, most of them arent even worth mentioning.

birthday party were probably the best live australian band to hit the us, despite the meager numbers in the audience.
give me a break.
nick the stripper? look at that video.
awe-inspiring.

misfits (how many times can a 17 year old wearing too-tight jeans and a bad haircut sport misfits merch, do you like the band??)

pavement

white stripes

My Chemical Romance (Teenagers scare… the living shit outta me… something about a murder machine… spew!!)

AFI + any similar type bands as chemical… these types are always the “saviours of rock”, and they are always shit.

Sonic Youth

Kiss

Pearl Jam

Guns + Roses

probably gonna be crucified, but I’ve only heard two songs (mother earth and silver) but
Jesu
dont get why they are such a big deal… songs were just a bit bleh… nothing spectacular at all. Maybe if I were taking drugs again I would get into it, lol…

Ok, I seldom post on here but I had to get in on this.

I hate the Grateful Dead. It sounds like two hours of the same fucking song. Whats the point? Also screw anything Emo, I don’t get it, it’s not hard, it doesn’t “rock” its just some whiny teenagers who are upset that their “goth” girlfriend is dating the quarterback.

On the other hand, I am ready for some new Bile!

zepplin, the beatles, and pink floyd

misfits (how many times can a 17 year old wearing too-tight jeans and a bad haircut sport misfits merch, do you like the band??)

That absolutely shits me off.

Same thing with the ramones. Cunts at HMV buy T-Shirts of “classic rock bands” so (they pray) people will think they know some underground shit.

Dick holes.

Never really got into the Stones…Jagger annoys me for some reason.

Rush: I absolutely hate that band with a fashion. Friend of mine’s obsessed with them, but I hate the voice and I think the music is just mediocre. I don’t get it.

Boston: Blame the same friend for that one. Heard it, hate it. Never been into classic rock, if they even fit in that category.

White Stripes: I like what they’re out to do. Minimalism and such, but the music is just…overrated? Nothing special about that band. They’re just a commercial garage band, nothing else. I like a few of their singles, but that’s about it. Bought two of the albums, and regret each one. Gave them both away as well.

GnR, poison and all of that 80s hair/glam bullshit: metal and rock is fine. But why the annoying voice trying to sound feminine? The style was absolute shit, the music was egh and I absolutely despise Axl Rose. And my jaw drops each time when someone actually goes to acknowledge Slash has a “great and influencial guitarist”. He sucks…

Stone Sour: I went through a slipknot phase, and can easily say that I still enjoy song of the first two albums. But this band is a fucking hack. “We’re too heavy, why not go commercial/radio friendly”, which they did. Lost a lot of respect for both of those bands since both went in that direction.

I can rant for days, but i’ll end it here. But I like Echo and Joy Divison is one of my favorites…sigh.

You know after only being exposed to Joy Division’s studio releases my opinion towards them as a band was pretty “meh”. That is until I heard “Les Bains Douches” which is an excellent live recording of one of their performances, one of my favorite live albums of all time. It really captures the energy of the band in ways the studio albums really fall short, IMO.

Why does that annoy you? Just because they’ve bought a t-shirt at a commercial outlet, does not mean they are any less of a fan than you.

Any what if they’re jUST discovering said band. They have to start somewhere. More power to them. I remember a time when I thought Slayer were the most hardcore band EVER and that nothing could be more underground. That was back in 1988. What were you into back then knuckles?!?! I’ll bet it wasn’t Slayer.

Don’t be so quick to judge. I’ve bought stuff from HMV before and I’ve been into the ‘underground’ for around 16-17 years. What’s the big deal.

And what’s wrong with the Misfits? Who cares who their fans are? Who cares if young Misfits fans also like emo? Concentrate on the music. The early Misfits stuff (77 - 79…before they went all horror comic book-y) was about as punk as it gets.

To be completely honest, its the whole misfits image that shits me, or the misfit “brand”, no idea why, as I mentioned, its because the “kids” i have spoken to who wear their logo, had no idea about the music it just looked cool. The only misfits song I’ve heard is scream, or whatever that roadrunner single was, awful.

heh… 1988, no I somehow doubt I would have been into slayer, I was 3. I have nothing wrong with people who actually get into the music, and not just the image. I used to socialize with that crowd for a long time, it gets old.

Its, like has been said by at least one other guy, the misfits as a brand, that shits me.

Also, my rant was more about the posers.

also, 1988, I was 1. …i wasn’t listening to much more than “awww lookie at the baby!!”

I suggest you check out early Misfits (Static Age, Legacy Of Brutality) and then get back to me about how much it ‘shits’ you.

when danzig left they had a legal battle with jerry only that resulted in danzig keeping rights/ownership of misfits songs they did with him and jerry only was allowed to use name the misfits and to produce merchandise.

so i guess jerry only wants to make money, there are certrainly ridiculous amount of misfits merchandise, even speedos, socks, wallets, etc shit.

I would imagine that being in any band with someone with the ego/reputation as Glenn Danzig would resemble something of a dictatorship - so can’t blame them for wanting to make something out of it. Heavens knows, Danzig is hardly going to EVER want to share the fame and glory (a la somebody else I can think of who instantly springs to mind and No I’m NOT thinking of Mike Patton).

The Misfits were cool. Danzig were ok for an album or three…after that they began to royally suck. He’s been peddling the same turgid, gimmicky schtick for years now - apparently irony free too. Unlike Rob Zombie, who can obviously smell the cheese factor in his artistic output and seemingly has a lot of fun with it. Danzig just honestly thinks he’s ‘evil’.

'Oooh look at me all brooding and sinister and dressed in black!! Couldn’t you just die!!"

Hmmm…yeah. So, I guess Danzig are one of those bands that I just can’t really see what the appeal is (minus their first few albums which had stood the test of time I guess).

Oh, also Patti Smith. Don’t get what the big deal is there either. Ditto Johnny Cash.

You’re not really paying attention to my complaint. I’ve listened to plenty of misfits in my time. My complaint is the way the misfits name is little more than brand to people nowadays. It’s more about the posers (and i really think I’ve been over that all ready).

So, please stop trying to defend a band who’s music isn’t being attacked, but rather the ravaging that has been done to their image.

Jesu.

As the Swans are one of my favorite all time bands, in their defense i say without an album like “Cop/Young God” Godflesh wouldn’t exist. So that makes them worthwhile in itself. But their styles tended to change so drastically throughout their career that i can see a lot of people only liking an album or two.

I love a lot of the bands listed already and i also hate an equal amount. generally i find myself appreciating what some of these bands did in their eras (beatles, stones, metallica, misfits, birthday party etc) but can’t stand to listen to them. it doesn’t mean they are bad or overrated though. just not my tastes.

The only bands i really find myself despising are things like Panic at the Disco. But these kids are so young i assume it is just the label molding them into douches and creating their crappy sound/image. i know how dumb i was when i was 18.

you think Panic at the disco could be the next Ministry? Bail on a eeeeeeviiiilllll label and start doing what they want to?

Aphex Twin.

Two words: big deal.

Musical ‘genius’ ?? Hmmm, not likely. His early techno tribal workout are borderline unlistenable, suitable only for the most ardent and e’ed up acid raver buffons and his squiggly synth later period is at best ‘cute’ and at worst ‘complete dross’. Then he has the nerve to rip off everything from Squarepusher to Brian Eno to Eric Satie. A poster boy for a genre that never needed a poster boy. Really, how passe.

I could reel off at least ten lesser known electronic music icons that leave that pasty ginger face for dead in terms of originality. I am literally bored to death with hearing how ‘brilliant’ and how ‘out there’ the guy is.

I just think a good majority of the record industry has grown half-assed and completely insincere. You have a bunch of the indie bands, who truly give a shit, who want to make a living, but aren’t too concerned with lining their pockets full of cash. Anything you see on mtv, or hear on the radio comes off as nothing more than uninspired garbage, with absolutely no point of concept, value, and meaning. But only money, “establishment”, and notability. You have these shitty bands like Nickelback, who have no relevance whatsoever - BUT! They do what I know’s going to sell. There’s no meaning and where’s the value to that? You write the same song, multiply it for five or so years worth of “material” - Albums.

And that’s the major problem with “musicians”, these days. Many have simply just lost touch with their fan-bases and sensibilities - alas our favorite jourg…err…and some of our favorites just release lackluster after lackluster. But truly bothers me is how these garbage, shit-stain bands like My Chemical Romance, Panic, At the Disco and Fall Out Boy can sell millions of copies to the naive, bubble-gum eating teens who have no concept at all of what good music is. And it’s a fucking shame that there’s only a minority out there who listen to ministry, or whatever and anything remotely obscure - that has at least a little taste.

And as much as it peeves me to say it. Compared to the mediocre shit that’s been pushed from MTV, Clear Channel (They own the radio, btw…), and Hot Topic. And my issue with hot topic. I’ve bought earrings from them before and a few shirts. Only thing hot topic is guilty for is attracting these poser 14 year olds who know jackshit of anything. They can run around their middle schools with misfit and sex pistol shirts all they want, but likely only know one song. “Yeah, I know that ugh…anarchy song? Y-y-Yeah! That anarchy song!”. True story on that one too, and you’d piss yourselves laughing at their response of what Anarchy is when asked…LOLZ…

Sorry for the rant…heh
