Buck Satan and the 666 Shooters

You want to listen to countrified, confederate flag waving, hick metal?

isn’t this a WEEN spin-off?

I would buy this if I ran across it at a store, but I really don’t feel like ordering online. I really liked What’s Wrong with Me, especially after hearing about Al giving BJs at Greyhound stops back in the day. Medication Nation has an awesome chorus but I just can’t stand the shouting… And Al just loves to rhyme with "tion"s a lot. Someone should share the love.

One word:

Pffffft.

[Reply]Curious to know who gets a songwriting credit for the song, “The Only Time I’m Sober’s When You’re Gone”.

From the liner notes on the crappy digipak sleeve

The only time I’m sober is when you’re gone - 3:21
“P. Gordon | P. Lacafo”

It should read ‘P. Jordan and P. Lucafo’ but it’s close enough. At least an attempt was made to give credit.

It’s such an obscure song I’m surprised anyone outside of of southern Cook County has ever heard it, let alone covered it. Then again, it might be an anthem in west Texas for all I know.

Thanks, g.

Well, supposedly the guitarist died a few months ago:

If you read the middle of it, it says that Heartsfield opened for many honky-tonk based rock bands at the time in the 70’s, like CS&N, Poco, Skynryd, etc. I have no doubt in my mind that it’s possible that Al could’ve seen one of those shows while he was in Denver back then.

Or, he could’ve just bought one of their records at WaxTrax! or something. Who knows.

Finding a Heartsfield album at WaxTrax! would have been like finding a Velvet Underground album at a John Denver convention.

It seems with quite a few songs it doesn’t even sound like al is singing. Sounds like someone else.

It’s really a shame because he really does have a decent singing voice. It’s not like he’s tone-deaf.

It all sounds like Al to me.

On the first track it sounded like someone else. The rest was obviously Al. But it was Al from beginning to end, so props to him. Shame he’s hardcore biker now and refuses to sing more often.

That’s funny, just the other day I was thinking about you and your John Denver story and how I was too drunk to remember it.[/reply]

I don’t have a story myself…but I know somebody who was dating the guy who wrote “Thank God I’m a Country Boy” when it went to #1.

My mom didn’t like it when I made fun of his picture on the cassette tape she had. I said he looked like a stupid dork and I bet he got his butt kicked a lot and she got mad, probably because she knew I was right. Parents are stupid like that.

Just tried to buy it last night, ended up being charged 5 times for my order, got the digital this morning and have been listening to it. I’m digging the solos, in context of the whole album I’m liking What’s Wrong With Me, but a few months ago I remember thinking that there would be better cuts on the album. Also… The Friend of the Devil cover is kind of a let down so far. The bonus track Dignity is not too bad. Going to get listen to it tonight and hopefully get some good wines.

Edit: I was surprised to see Barry Kooda on the credits. Pretty much the Bridge Benefit lineup minus Paul and Eddie.

Dignity is one of the highlights for me.
Sounds like an Exile era Stones song.

is it just me or does 'get ‘em Mikey’ or ‘Mr XXXX on XXX’ appear on 50% of the songs? And they all sound like terrible overdubs.

Yeah, I mentioned that in my initial review.
It’s one of the nagging problems that keeps this from being as good as it has the potential to be.

I have to agree, the cover of Friend of the Devil was a huge letdown.

I just got the CD today (shipping from US to Canada is surprisingly slow). Mine was autographed by Al. I think this is a great debut for Buck Satan and the 666 Shooters. Super campy indeed, but so what, I was smiling/laughing through most of the album. The first half feels like someone has accidentally played a 33 RPM record at 45.

I think all of the CDs were.
