Your Thoughts - Chemlab

With the current state of Ministry feeding a lot of Pesimisim to this board, I thought I’d introduce a new concept. I have been listening to a lot of my old CD’s and firmly believe that some of the best Industrial/Metal/Alternative/Dance, etc was written decades ago. So I wanted to drop a band’s name (in this installment, Chemlab) and get everyone’s responses. Just some good feedback, disecting back catalogs, live reveiews, etc. Let’s get back to some good discussions revolving around the genre that Ministry took to the Masses.
Every week or so I will throw out a new band and we can start again.

I like Chemlab. Saw them on the 2010 Midi Ghetto Tour.

Burn Out At The Hydrogen Bar was alright.
I saw Jared catch himself on fire while performing with Pigface.

Chemlab is one of those bands that was so over-hyped to me that they didn’t have a chance to live up to the expectations. Burn out the Hydrogen Bar did next to nothing for me the first time I heard it. I expected something completely different than what I heard.

That all changed the first time I heard Exile on Mainline. The track blew me away and still to this day remains a favorite. Not long after I bought East Side Militia and loved it. I still listen to the album frequently.
Then, in what is an all too familiar story, they broke up just when things got interesting. By the time they reunited, they just were not as good. The Cracknation Boys just didn’t mix with Jared to me. I didn’t even bother with the Remix album that followed. I did eventually learn to appreciate Burn out the Hydrogen bar and now consider it a strong album.

East Side Militia is their most Ministry-related album. Most of the songs were co-written with William Tucker.

saw Chemlab as the headliner for the USSA show at the knitting factory. Chemlab sucked.

I saw Chemlab in the 90s…I dig them!

i’ve never seen them or heard them.

when did they tour with pigface?

Only heard Burn Out…, but not a fan of it

To me they represent everything that was wrong with early 90’s “cyberpunk” industrial.

HAH! I saw this thread and knew this was coming.

I love nasty cyberpunk industrial, so there you go.

Burn Out… is a kick-ass record. I need to physically pick it up soon.

I think Xtra mentioned that this was his favorite record of all time.

They didn’t. Jared was Pigface’s lead singer on one of their tours. Not sure what year, but I saw them at the Masquerade.

You people are fools. Chemlab. Amazing. Barker almost produced them.

I am low and slow.

Almost?
I almost got laid a few times, but guess what? Doesn’t count.

What I’ve heard has struck me as pretty generic 90s industrial rock, nothing spectacular…

They’re kind of a crappier ‘Pretty Hate Machine’/‘Broken’ era Nine Inch Nails, no? What I’m hearing now is sounding that way to me.

Upon more listen it’s not bad. Somewhere between that period of Nine Inch Nails and My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult.

What kind of set Chemlab apart from their contemporaries was how influenced they were by the older protopunk and glam rock artists, rather than just being rooted in '80s post-punk or metal like most industrial rock at that point.

Hi Gerda.[/reply]

Not enough grammatical errors.

Not to mention he’s (lowandslow) been here forever.

HAHA! You got that right 'Pick.

Snag a copy asap. Hey it might be typical 90’s “cyperpunk” or whatever, but it works, it hits the spot like a needle in vein. Hydrogen Bar is a pretty filthy record, sleazy, sex driven, drug influenced pandemonium right up your anal cavity.

I’d shy away from their newer releases though, heard a few tracks off Oxidizer… cringe worthy moments on that record haha. Their yet to be released record Machine God might not be any different either.

Yes, exactly. If you were an industrial fan into Bolan/Bowie/Iggy, you got Chemlab.

If not, well…
