I hope the title is self-explanatory. So, tell us.
When I was in 7th grade (around 1987) I actually saw Red Hot Chili Peppers do a gig on the top of a half-pipe at a skateboard contest at the Anaheim Convention Center (Vision Presents Holiday Havoc). But the Chili Peppers were just incidental to the skate event (this was also where the video game 720 got debuted and people were losing their minds and waiting hours to play it).
But I guess the first REAL concert was in either '90 or '91 in high school when my buddy and I saw OZZY OSBOURNE for the first time. Since I knew my mom would get pissed off I said we were going to see LA GUNS (they were an opening act) since there wasnât any controversy surrounding them and it wouldnât give her nightmares. Of course she found out anyway and realized I was pulling a fast one, though I played it kind of cool . . . . âOzzy? Oh, yeah, I guess heâs gonna be there too. Weâre going to see LA Guns.â Neither of us even liked LA Guns, I should add.
The concert was AWESOME. We had nosebleed seats (Long Beach Sports Arena), but it was incredible. Opening bands were LA Guns, Lynch Mob and Alice in Chains (they were total nobodies at the time but were just getting airplay for âMan in the Boxâ).
The crowd was insane and there was NO love for LA Guns. Before LA Guns took stage, Metallicaâs âOneâ played over the PA as part of the intermission music . . . people went nuts and the whole auditorium was shouting along to the piped-in song. Then when LA Guns took stage everyone was fired up and ONLY wanted Ozzy. When they played their radio hit âBallad of Jayneâ the singer would stick his mic out into the crowd so they could sing back part of a refrain . . . . but everytime that mic would come out it would just pick up the audience screaming angrily, âF**K YOU!!! WE WANT OZZY!!!â It was awesome.
My first concert was Santana in 1980âŚwhile I liked it,I was still a bit to young to fully appreciate itâŚ
My first real vivid ,full fledged concert experience was Judas Priest in 1982 on the Screaming for Vengance tourâŚUriah Heep opened upâŚI can still remember that show like it was yesterdayâŚI was just mesmerized the entire timeâŚand when Halford rode his bike out during Hell bent for Leather I thought I was gonna shoot off in to the skyâŚleft a big impression on my young psycheâŚ
My first gig was Linford and the Gooter Gs in 2000
My first concert was Pearl Jam in 2000.
My first DIY concert was supposed to be Spelling Bee in Boston last month but I missed it (mix up with the place) and ended up getting my balls broken by the cops. It didnât help that I was discharging a horrible green urine for the previous few days and so was already in a bit of pain, genitally speaking.
First big time concert was Pink Floyd in '94. Seems awfully late in life, but I was from a small town and bands didnât exactly roll through on a regular basis.

LA Guns were always faggyâŚI never got themâŚIâm glad they got heckledâŚ
My first concert was Metallica on the Justice Tour. Had really shitty seats, but it was all good.
Kinda cool story though⌠about 5 years ago this guy I worked with who has like 584309503476 cds/vhs/etc⌠of every possible genre gave me a bootleg vhs copy of the show.
So I have my entire first show on tape. Now I just need to find a VCR againâŚ

Zick, thank you for my first real laugh of the day.
By the way, hereâs what those guys sound like, if any of you were interested. They are kind of the kings of local underground here, and theyâve been touring a lot lately. Super nice people too. Joe plays in a million side projects and Mabel is all fit-in-your-pocket tiny and totally badass.
Iâll listen to âem later and tell you if I really think they suck or not. Iâm kind of opposed to two people bands lately. They seem to be all the rage but I just want to kick them all in the face. Is this White Stripesâ fault? Did they start that crap? But White Stripes kind of, sort of rocked a bit. These new duos donât. There will be like one guy with a banjo and one girl with a triangle. Or a guy with a guitar and a guy with a tambourine or a slide whistle. Or one girl with an Oboe and one dude with . . . another oboe.
Itâs not their fault completely. Iâm kind of at that age where I just automatically hate 99.9% of everything new and I donât even have to listen to it to know it sucks.
Also . . . seriously? The name of the band is Spelling Bee?
^
I was at that show!
My buddyâs parents stayed at a Holiday Inn by the venue and got us a room too so we wouldnât be driving around. After the show we ran around the hotel like degenerate animals, stealing all the ashtrays and flinging them from the fire escape down to the cars and street below.
Also, it was awesome because Universal Studios at the time was doing the Miami Vice stunt show, so while we were uber stoned outside the venue on the patio we could trip out on the fireworks and pyro show.
I donât remember anything particularly impressive about Helmet, but Ministry was awesome.
There were lots of mohawked punks and skinheads there. I was afraid - being only a skinny 15 year old - and stood near the back trying to look cool wit my Misfits âHorror Businessâ shirt on. A la this:

My second gig was the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
I think this was just before they hit the big time with Blood Sugar Sex Magic.
my first show was ska concert in 2000. i was 12-13 at the time. less than jake, suicide machines, subb etc. twas a really amazing time! the comradery after the show was the best part. the show was on an island (parc jean drapeau) and the only way to get off the island is by metro. the whole station (and the island for that matter) was full of drunk punks singing songs together. that really stuck with me.

Iâm not into ska, but that does sound great. As you were pretty young, what were the logistics for that? Did you have an older brother or something?

no i just went with 2 of my buddies who were of the same age. kids in mtl grow up really fast, i guess. we were hanging out downtown and smoking pot at 11 lol.
yeah, any show is great there. i just saw system of a down/deftones this summer at the same location and it was the same thing. thousands of drunk people singing songs in the packed metros. i love/miss mtl so much.
