I didn’t show up in time (purposely), for them. I can only imagine.

hey miguel. i’m always fascinated by the term “pop music”. a lot of people equate this with crap like the monkeys(who i actually liked) and the spice girls and hillary duff. in other words, light weight.
my definition of pop music is anything you create that people can currently appreciate. i think ministry and NIN made pop music. i think beastie boys made pop music. yeah, maybe this is not the standard view , maybe it’s a radical view, but wtf. the labels are meaningless.
leonard nimoy’s forays into music could be considered pop.not to mention william shatner’s.( gingerly walking away from the computer with a big fat grin)
Let me come to the defense of Hemlock, here.
While, yes, their music was horrid, They genuinely had stage presence, and by stage presence, I mean you could tell that they liked what they were doing and were having a good time. The singer was at the door thanking people for coming (when the doors opened and closed)regardless if they liked his band or not. That, to me. carries alot of weight. Pit bull Day Care had no presence, they had no songs, and they acted as if they were bigger than Ministry. Hemlock, While really not into their music, seemed like a decent bunch of guys happy to have a shot! Pit Bull seemed like assholes and acted bitter as if their shot should’ve been handed to them years ago!

NIN
too me I think Pretty Hate was the best because I really dug his lyrics. they didn’t sound petty or emo. They sounded like the pain of some guy that had been jilted out of love so bad that he had some really raw emotion to let out, and the anger in the music perfectly complemented his lyrics.
In short, it seemed genuine… Shortly after, I found out that whole album was written because he had foud his Finacee in bed with his best friend. What a day? Lose your “best friend” and your Fiancee in one fell swoop!
the two best songs on that whole album are “Terrible Lie” and “Something I Can Never Have” both perfectly lay out the pain and anger of his situation.
Everything after PHM seemed contrived and not genuine… Specifically Downword spiral… THe music is angry but the lyrics are contrived and he’s trying to write anger and pain Specifically the song “Hurt” love the music hate the lyrics! the whole album just smacks of “look how angry I am!!!” where PHM is just "this is how I feel!
just my two cents

Was never interested in NIN’s lyrics as they were always dodgy and far too self possessed. He has had some howlers, e.g. “Kind of drifting into the abstract in terms of how I see myself” (‘Only’, 2005)
His attemts at political lyrics have also been scary (the whole of ‘Year Zero’)
But his music (though often simple, and getting increasingly so) is decent and the production values on his albums are always top notch. And I still think TDS is one of the best rock albums ever made.
otto rules!
“shake that motherfucking ass, ho!”
and his cover of “i’m too sexy” is awesome. can’t go wrong with otto.
I’ve seen him open for puppy 3 or 4 times…the first time, I was like, "what the fuck? " the 2nd time, I was like “this is stupid” the 3rd time, some guy in my section was really into him and I found it hilarious and then kinda caught onto it. by the 4th time, I was a big fan.
All this talk of TDS actually made me find it and put it in my car today. It still holds up I tells ya. Tracks like Heresy, The Becoming, Eraser, Reptile, and the title track are still great.
Everytime Reznor puts out an album, it’s hilarious. People are always disappointed but yet always go back to him for more and more disappointment.
now that could apply to alot of people to alot of bands… metallica, ministry, kmfdm, etc.
How or when was Fugazi emo?
LOL at people in their 30’s who still act like they’re in high school. Talking about what the cool kids listen to. Give me a break. I used to hate NIN and Tool b/c they were mainstream and people I thought were lame really liked them. Then I grew up and quit caring about listening to the most random underground stuff and figured out that people like those bands b/c their music and live show is good.
Fugazi was never ‘emo’, but Rites of Spring (feat Canty/Guy) were the first so-called ‘emo’ (screamo) band.
Sunny Day Real Estate (whom I love) are often credited as the 90s band that inspired many bad, shitty copies that 2 ‘generations’ (about 3-7 years later) of bands that are now called ‘emo’ (ie, Dashboard Confessional… etc). SDRE never claimed to be ‘emo’ it was foisted apon them.
And now revisionist retards who weren’t alive at the time, are claiming Fugazi as ‘emo’. Gah.
From a lyrical standpoint, I think Trent, from “With Teeth” forward has gotten progressively better. “The Slip” is, IMO, the best NIN album lyrically. Musically it’s darned good too.
I’ve said it before too - I agree. I think The Slip is NIN’s best effort so far - it is musically and lyrically mature and doesn’t sound outdated. It doesn’t try too hard which his other releases have had examples of.
How or when was Fugazi emo?
Apparently they were called Emo (a lot of them were straight edge) but these kids were mainly younger skater kids who went to the Fugazi shows in the early 90s. Compared to the other punk kids, they were the weaker, whiny kids they called Emo. This is from someone I know who was huge in Fugazi. But he says that today’s Emo is nothing compared to what they used the term back then. It has absolutely no connection. So it’s just an example of a term - hipster is another example (different meaning but similar way back when).
Anyhow, Trent is today’s emo I meant to say, and his portrayal of it existed long before bands like My Chemical Romance or HIM were around. He then went to Muscles after emo exploded but he’ll always be an emo …
All this talk of TDS actually made me find it and put it in my car today. It still holds up I tells ya. Tracks like Heresy, The Becoming, Eraser, Reptile, and the title track are still great.
IT WON’T GIVE UP IT WANTS ME DEAD
GODDAMN THIS NOISE INSIDE MY HEAD

Not quite, but he’s got some guns on him now.
And now revisionist retards who weren’t alive at the time, are claiming Fugazi as ‘emo’. Gah.
the first time i heard fugazi and emo in the same sentence was probably around the early 90s in jr high so they have had the tag for quite some time. but it think a lot of bands back then got the tag deserved or not. but we are talking about a label that encompasses stuff like this along with stuff like dashboard confessional and panic at the disco so none of it makes much sense anyhow. but i think most of us agree that now its all about the fashion and has little or nothing to do with the music.
back on topic, the worst opener i ever saw was nin opening for bowie! just kidding nin was actually good back then.
pigface’s lowest of the low tour had some of the best openers i can remember: scorn, bagman, not breathing, dead voices on air, fm einheit/gry all for like $15.
after trent got sober, i couldn’t believe the difference in…uh…girth, and muscle. replace one addiction with another. good for him.HE, i can still call my friend, as opposed to a bunch of wasted losers we talk about here. and yeah, i still think the current NIN leaves much to be desired.
but so it goes.
trent needs to make money like the rest of us poor saps. and he did have that lawsuit against john malm which cost him a bunch, even tho he settled (or won?) in his favor.
no excuse for boring music, however.
Ed, I agree with you and add a little more: Anything with a simple structure like verse chorus verse can be considered pop. It’s not opera or a classical composition or an experiment with noise or a musical happening or whatever. You have a formula. You put a CD out with more or less 12 songs with a similar structure. You follow that rules and then you show your work on a tour. That’s what ministry or nin or britney spears do. And also, pop music isn’t just music it’s also attitude and image. A pop band follows the rules of the market and sells an ideal of themselves.
yeah reznor never said he made something new or goundbreaking; back in 94 in some interview he himself said something like “i make pop music, it is what it is”. i saw the show in 2007 and it was one of the best concert experiences in my life though i’m not into nin that much as i was, say, in 99-2002. and unlike some other band, nin presented a very good setlist and didn’t hesitate to vary and mix it up during the tours since 2005. and they still do!
i saw some videos from the current tour production, holy shit, that must be amazing to see live. i liked with teeth and year zero, didn’t care for ghosts at all… as for the latest free “slip” album, it has some “cloned” songs on it and one good instrumental, but for the most part it’s pretty sub-standard. i hope ghosts and the slip were made from the bits and pieces he had lying around to test his new marketing scheme (and it was a pretty successful test at that) and that he still has some nice albums to offer in the future.
By golly, Peligro’s right! Melodies and tunes are for teenagers and idiots, being spoon-fed their opinions by corporate entities that exist solely to make money!
I never said that. Either yr not reading my posts correctly or yr reading and not paying attention or yr making assumptions about what I am saying even before you have read my posts.
My criticism was directed towards the entities such as MTV and Rolling Stone who hype these fuckers up as being truly innovative and creative artists whilst ignoring the artists that bands like NIN and their ilk pilfer from because they don’t fit into a neat, marketable package.
I don’t care if you listen to NIN. I hope you do and I hope it brings satisfaction in large quantities. My anger wasn’t directed at you. I think NIN are lame. I think their lyrics are ridiculously bad and the music is a watered down version of any number of truly unique and innovative acts that came before them. But if you like it then fine, I really couldn’t care less - it doesn’t make you any less of a person. It’s only fucking music.
Thank you sir, for opening my eyes! From now on if it doesn’t sound like someone threw a broken tape recorder into a clothes-dryer, I’m throwing it out!
As I said, I listen to The Smiths and there’s plenty of melody/musical craftmenship there, so there goes that argument.
