What was your first concert?

Just curious what was the first concert you went to?

Apologies if this was already a thread.

The first concert I ever went to was a free show that Blue Oyster Cult played outside here at Union Station. Really I was just along for the ride with a couple of chicks I knew.

The first concert I ever paid to see was Sausage/Rollins Band/Helmet summer of '94.

Rollins was about what I expected, and seeing Claypool was cool (still the only time I’ve seen him play- damn is that guy good), but Helmet absolutely KILLED.

Pearl Jam, 2000

I didn’t see jack in high school, being from a very small town.
So the first major show I went to was Pink Floyd in '94.

My first show was Ministry, Helmet and Sepultura.
I think it was the '93 tour? I was young, very young.
Either 11 or 12 years old.

My Dad drove a friend and I to the show and dropped us off.
However, as we pulled up my Dad gave me this look of that was a
mix of anger and confusion. As he had no idea what “Ministry” was,
nor did he have any inkling what types of fans they attracted.
I’m honestly surprised he even let us go in. Maybe he figured it was
going to scare me so much that I would never ask to go to another
concert again.

No such luck with that idea.

eh, i think it was Nine Inch Nails in 94, the one with Hole and Marylin Manson. I unfortunatley missed the next tour with PWEI which i regret. loves me some PWEI.

U2 with BB King, Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe AZ, 12-19-87. The show was $5 (they were filming for their documentary Rattle and Hum).

Here’s my concert history, if you’re interested. The last several years are incomplete, I just haven’t had time to finish updating it:

1002

First:
Kiss - Dynasty Tour 1979 Mid-South Coliseum Memphis, TN

Second:
Van Halen - Fair Warning Tour 1981 Mid-South Coliseum Memphis, TN

subb, less than jake, suicide machines - 1999!

12 years old, good times!

Maybe Skinny Puppy off “Too Dark Park” in Minneapolis. If it wasn’t my first concert, it was the first one that mattered, loved that show - probably changed my life.

marilyn manson in 99, NIN the following year

I saw Red Hot Chilli Peppers perform on the top of a skateboard ramp stage in 1986 or 87 as part of the mid-competition entertainment.

The first full-blown rock concert that was not part of a skateboard competition that I saw was probably the following lineup in 1990 (shown in order of billing) . . .

Ozzy Osbourne
LA Guns
Lynch Mob
Alice In Chains

Second:
Van Halen - Fair Warning Tour 1981 Mid-South Coliseum Memphis, TN

I wish I had the opportunity to see the original VH live (not counting the reunion). I did get to see Van Hagar twice on the FUCK tour in '91, and Alice In Chains opened for one of them, which was cool.

1st Buddy Rich: Dec 1982
2nd Tom Petty: March 1983
3rd The Police: August 1983 (Shea Stadium)

impressive list, 10:02. was wondering, what did you think of the Soup Dragons in 91 and Lenny Kravitz in 92? Big fan of both. I’ve seen Lenny a few times and it’s honestly some of the best concerts I’ve been to.

growing up, my city used to have hometown fairs and stages would be set up every 10 blocks or so. so I caught alot of that when I was younger, they stopped doing that in 99, so I was about 12 or 13 at the time. there was some really good music there that year…all local stuff, but I guess I was really starting to notice music at the time. It left an impression on me. including a shitty cover band that was doing Offspring’s “Pretty Fly For a White Guy” while bringing up an insanely drunk duo of girls to sing the chorus.

first official concert for me was Gomez in 2002, In Our Gun tour. Been a fan of theirs since 98 when they first started, still a big fan of theirs and actually will be seeing them again in July. I’ve travelled the country to see them…total count is probably around 30.

I saw Red Hot Chilli Peppers perform on the top of a skateboard ramp stage in 1986 or 87 as part of the mid-competition entertainment.

YES!!!

Saw the Chili Peppers back in '87 in Los Angeles when they supported The Butthole Surfers. Fucking killer gig. Took acid and spent the evening in a haze, tripping off my nut while both the Chilis and the Buttholes fucked shit up. Highlight of the night was when Gibby pulled out his flame thrower, just as the penis reconstruction footage appeared onthe back projector screen. It was a nightmare come true. People were puking and screaming. The noise coming from the stage was evil and psychedelic. They do not make gigs like that any more. Concerts today are PUSSY. Sorry guys but it’s true.

The only gig I have ever seen that even came close to that was a Wolf Eyes gig I went to in 2004.

First gig I was taken to was Van Halen in '79 at some outdoor venue in LA. My dad took me. I was 12. On the way there we picked up two hot blonde chick hitchhikers who were on their way to the gig. I sat between them in the back seat and they kept flashing their tits and they were both as high as fuck. It was amazing - especially for a 12 year old. My dad looked so awkward and embarrassed. And of course Van Halen kicked butt on the night. I can still remember the smell of weed in the air more than 30 years later.

A few months later I saw Kiss. It was the second last show that drummer Peter Criss played at. They were great but couldn’t match the intensity of the Halen.

And DAMN if there ain’t some young prongers on here!

Ozzy Osbourne
LA Guns
Lynch Mob
Alice In Chains

Saw Ozzy in '86…with Metallica in support.

Well, they were both support acts - Lenny opening for The Cult and the Dragons opening for INXS. I really didn’t/don’t care for either act. Lenny was new on the scene with that Beatles-esque “Let Love Rule” song, which I couldn’t stand at the time (!), and if I remember correctly, the Soup Dragons had that “Free” song, yes? I didn’t like that one either! I did enjoy The Cult and was really into INXS’s X album at the time.

I was a serious concert fiend in the '90s. I know there’s a lot of U2 hate nowadays, but the Joshua Tree stadium tour was pretty epic at the time, and was quite a first concert experience for me. Following that up with Depeche Mode/OMD was great, but seeing Ministry and Laibach at the same venue in a 3-month span - and pretty much at the apex of my Wax Trax/industrial period - lit a major fire under my ass, and all I wanted to do was go to concerts as much as possible. Despite my passion for concerts, I still managed to miss some great ones.

When I was 19, living in San Diego, I was denied entry to a Severed Heads/MC 900 FT Jesus concert (21+, of course), in '88 we were 5 minutes from Skinny Puppy taking the stage for their ViviSectVI tour, and it began pouring rain outside, so that was cancelled, and I wouldn’t see them until 2004… Front 242 cancelled their '93 tour about a week before they were going to be in town, and in '92 I stupidly passed up going out to see Meat Beat Manifesto (Satyricon Tour, and the opener was a good band, too…can’t remember who), and stayed home with my girlfriend (eeediot!). Finally, I missed Ministry at Lollapalooza - the only time I’ve missed them - because the event sold out (no one really saw that coming at the time). I actually went to the pavilion with my friend and we listened to their set from outside while we tried to find scalpers (to no avail).

Shit, call the ramble police. Sorry!

Billy Idol, 2006

I remember it well.
engelbert humperdinck, at the auditorium theater in chicago when I was ten . sitting in the balcony of a place with perfect accoustics is enough.

First concert was when I was frickin’ tiny, like five or so. ZZ muthafuckin’ Top.

I’m pretty lucky as I can remember this easily…my first concert was Kiss in full make-up in Auckland, New Zealand @ Western Springs Raceway around 1980-81. I was 5. My older brother & I were in full Kiss make-up too. I can remember clearly as the next day we were taken to see Empire Strikes Back…it was a pretty bad-ass weekend for a kid.
