What Ministry (or related) songs have you or your band played?

I’m pretty sure we have more than a few musicians on this board. Just curious what Ministry songs you can sing or play on any instrument, and/or if your band ever jams the full songs or plays them at gigs…

I’ve been in and out of a few bands over the years, but mostly worked alone. Here’s my personal list:

Halloween - programmed on synth, no change from the original, performed at a friend’s party earlier this year. Afterwards, someone asked where the "mmm bop mmm bop bop"s were at! Sounded retarded when I did it, so I left them out.

I Prefer - programmed on synth, same as the album version, played at the same party. Got a great response!

We Believe - I’m working on this one, but the clangy percussive noises throughout are seemingly impossible to recreate. I really want to play this one live.

All Day, Revenge - can play these on synth, never programmed them.

Stigmata, The Missing, Burning Inside, Just One Fix, Apathy, Man Should Surrender, So What, Brick Windows - guitar chords (yeah, the easy ones!)

I Will Refuse - my first band played this live at our very first gig back in 1991. I played bass guitar on the synth! :\ Sounded pretty good at the time.

Songs I want to learn and/or program and perform:

We Shall Cleanse The World (because of the YGDSOB version)
Attack Ships On Fire (same)
Stigmata
Where You At Now? (would probably sound like shit without all the samples)
Work For Love - I love the guitars in this song, especially in the live recordings
Idiot - seems like it would be a fun live tune

i can play most of the ministry songs on bass. i tabbed all the bass guitar parts for myself because i was frustrated with the extremely shitty bass tabs for ministry on “teh intarweb”. some are so-so, but some are waaay off. now i’m tabbing some ministry synth basses (just like you, we believe, you know what you are, etc) out of boredom.

to be fair, ministry isn’t something that requires great technique or memory; i’m talking about the bass (and sometimes guitar too). bass parts are extremely simple and little to no variations. which is not a bad thing, just gets boring sometimes. and hearing u.s.s.a. album now i can’t understand how didn’t barker get extremely bored playing it all live.

i’m talking about 1986-2003 ministry of course, but latest 3 albums shouldn’t be much more complex, maybe requiring some neat speed for all that metal. i’m not in any band, just playing bass for a hobby for 3 years now… though sometimes i play ministry stuff (just one fix, lava, n.w.o., stigmata) with couple of my friends who are guitarists.

I often wondered if Paul ever got bored playing those songs. Either he wrote simple bass lines to make his job a cakewalk, or was encouraged to keep it simple by Al…who knows? Sometimes it looked like he was bored on stage, hovering over E and G for 90+ minutes! I do like Paul’s minimal style in Ministry, but I can see how 17 years of that would be enough.

back when i used to sing for this thrash/hardcore band with some friends (not a big deal, just a few friends with beers fucking around in the studio, really) we would often cover So What… Its actually a great warmup song due to its repetitive nature. And its fun to perform.

I’m in the same boat as Gila, I just sit here in front of the computer and doodle around with bass bits.

Never done a proper Ministry cover, though I “incorporated” (fucking nicked) bits of Stigmata for a trashy punk band I fronted briefly.

yeah. though occasionally there was some nice stuff, like “step” or “brick windows”… “leper” is simplistic but it’s got three bass guitar tracks! revco case is the same, can you imagine what it’s like to plow through “tv mind” (ygdsoab) jerking only low D string - for 8 minutes? oh boy! although “mr. lucky” has some cool fills here and there but they can’t be heard easily behind all that “brass”. but my opinion is that paul’s bass was the 30% that “made” revco… i mean - stainless steel providers, can’t sit still, gila copter, something wonderful! paul once said that his favourite side project to work on was lard. maybe it’s because the riffs were plenty and a bit faster?

I was working on a cover of Unsung a while ago. I ended up scrapping it though cos it was a bit… well, shit really.
It had some nice self recorded samples from the factory in it though which I’ll probably end up using in an original track.

I’ve fucked around with a couple of other Ministry tracks too, nothing serious, just messing around like.
I did this stupid Ministry VS Monty Python thing called Ex-Leper. Basicly Leper with some Life of Brian samples over the top of it. Turned out quite funny.
Oh, and a Nursing Home abortion. You remember that one don’t you, Tenohtwo? [;)]

As for trying anything serious again, I’d like to but being hugely influenced by LORAH and Filthpig especially, I think my own stuff sounds too much like Ministry to make an impact. I’ve always felt that the best covers are the ones done in a completely different style to the original.
So there’s not much point in me touching Ministry, NIN, FLA, Killing Joke etc…
If that makes sense.

umm, the closest i got to playing ministry tunes was doing supernaut ministry-style (live, not recorded) with one of my older bands. No ‘actual’ covers tho.

I’ve never covered Ministry but I have spent a lot of time imitating various drum patterns of theirs from the Twitch and PTP days. These “covers” always mutate into something that sounds nothing like the originals but they are a great place to start.

I used to know a bunch of guitar and bass stuff…Thieves, Stigmata, Just One Fix, So What, Scarecrow. Haven’t played in years, but I remember it being fairly easy.

I play drums…mostly classic rock…zep, rush, sabbath

For your listening pleasure (or pain?), here’s a few of my programmed songs. These are a few of several songs I played at a friend’s party a few months ago. It’s just the instrumental tracks… I thought about recording a couple of quick live takes with vox and guitar, but I have a really nasty cold I’m fighting off (and the beer is really helping). The last two are Skinny Puppy and Nitzer Ebb songs. I’m really happy with how Testure came out, considering it was a real bitch to program (mainly the drum parts).

If you think they suck, just say so. I’m a big boy, I can take it.

I like the two ministry tracks…dude u/someone else should put vocals down.

way back in the day there was a piss army tribute planned. some bands got all teh way done, some others didn’t, but a project i had for awhile called restitution covered eity. we heavied it up pretty well, i played guitar/vox and copy/pasted some drums here and there, but we only ever had a rough mix down. i’ll share it sometime.

I don’t know what it is, but I always lose my timing playing the riff during the verses of Diety. I think the speed and the intermittent bass drum fills that come in throw me off. Love that song, though.

Revco - once I’m feeling better, I’ll record Halloween and I Prefer w/vox and put it up. I tried singing The Cure’s “A Forest” w/guitar a few minutes ago, and was getting light-headed. Fucking cold! Time to open another Oktoberfest pssss

Just heard the song catgoat - very cool! Great job with the vocals, too. Sounded almost exactly like Al’s vocals on the record. Thanks for upping that, Christonabun.

Here’s a studio jam (3 of us) we just played in September 2007 to “What Your Doing” by RUSH. Please note we hadn’t jammed since like 1995…so many mistakes & probably haven’t played this tune since like 1992. Chemistry is key though.

Songs I play the most:

Stigmata
The Missing
Burning Inside
Something Wonderful (which I may play around and actually cover someday).

I’m more of a guitarist, but do play some keyboards. I’ve always wanted to get more into synths, programming and sampling, but have absolutely no idea where to begin other than just going out and buying a synth. Is it all self-explanatory?

1002, what did you use on those tracks? Some pretty good drum sounds…

All of the songs were programmed on the KORG Triton Extreme workstation. The drums have layered snares, with added compression and EQ.
