Here’s a studio jam (3 of us) we just played in September 2007 to “What Your Doing” by RUSH. Please note we hadn’t jammed since like 1995…so many mistakes & probably haven’t played this tune since like 1992. Chemistry is key though.
I have three Rush songs programmed that I like to jam once in a while - Bravado, Subdivisions, and Time Stand Still. I’m not good at fast/complex guitar solos, so those songs are manageable for me. I actually programmed Bravado from the ground up, but use MIDI files for the other two songs. I eventually want to tackle The Pass and something else off of Hold Your Fire (yeah, I’m a big geek for 80’s-era Rush). In the Skinny Puppy dept., I want to add Addiction and Rodent to my synth programmed repertoire. Tough band to cover, because they use so many custom sounds and samples.

if i remember correctly (its been a while since i was in “the industry”) i think you can get SP sound banks.
I do have the “Skinned” sample CD, which has a bunch of interesting loops and samples. In fact there are a couple of Addiction bass loops on there that will probably come in handy. Now if I could only get those radio samples from “Rodent” isolated, that would help. I haven’t looked for SP samples online in a while.
For your listening pleasure (or pain?), here’s a few of my programmed songs. These are a few of several songs I played at a friend’s party a few months ago. It’s just the instrumental tracks… I thought about recording a couple of quick live takes with vox and guitar, but I have a really nasty cold I’m fighting off (and the beer is really helping). The last two are Skinny Puppy and Nitzer Ebb songs. I’m really happy with how Testure came out, considering it was a real bitch to program (mainly the drum parts).
If you think they suck, just say so. I’m a big boy, I can take it.

I know I said I think covers that sound different are the best ones but that certainly is impressive. Can hardly tell the difference on Halloween.
Didn’t it take you an age getting the sounds right?
Thanks S.L.U.G.! I definitely slaved over getting some of those instruments at least in the ballpark of how they sound on the CD, but of course it’s impossible to make a carbon copy. I like the idea of new arrangements, too, but I also get a kick out of trying to replicate the original song faithfully. I programmed some Click Click songs for a tribute gig last year, and a couple of them came really close to off-the-record sounding. It was a challenge for me, since I’m using a newer workstation, and Click Click was using rare synths like the EDP Wasp to create their signature sound. I did re-arrange a couple of their songs to sound more ‘modern day’ (this is late-80’s EBM we’re talking about). The main challenge is writing all these complete songs on the same synth, and tweaking them enough so they don’t sound like they all come from the same synth. I really need to explore working with softsynths and plug-ins more - I’m just so…ugh…‘old school’. I prefer having a sequencer, sampler, and everything in one box. It’s what I’m comfortable with, I guess. I don’t exactly have a spare room full of vintage synths collecting dust! There are a few of those old analog beasts I wouldn’t mind owning, that’s for certain.
Oh, and a Nursing Home abortion. You remember that one don’t you, Tenohtwo? [;)]
Oh, yeah, unfortunately…
For the record, I’m not too proud of anything I said on that thread…in-fact I felt like a dick after all was said and done. I think I took the guy (Fred ?) for a spammer, so I blasted him, the Coronation Road/Foghorn Leghorn dialogue, and the song, then somehow ended up in a flame war with a lurker. Ugh…not one of my finer moments this board. Wasn’t right for me to go off on someone else’s music like that. Didn’t know that was you either…sorry man.
Up until now I refrained from posting any of my own music, partly because I don’t think it’s anything special, and partly because I feel like I’m voluntarily setting myself up for the firing squad! I do appreciate the comments… I realize it’s not earth-shattering stuff I’m putting out there.

Heheh
It’s cool, Fred deserved the shit he got, the silly old goat…
I was quite surprised how seriously that was taken, was just something I threw together in 10 minutes for a laugh, intentionally laughably bad.
Was expecting the odd [laugh] or [rolleyes] smilies, but it got out of hand and Fred helped it along too I suppose and for that I apologise on his behalf…[;)]
Anyways, I’m a plug-ins man myself and know how hard it is to get the sound that’s in my head out of them. I’ve not used hardware synths before but it must be the same.
Getting the right sound is an artform in itself, I’ve spent hours just fiddling without getting anything recorded before. So I can appreciate the work that’s gone into your tracks even though I find mashed up stuff more interesting, if you get me.
I wouldn’t really mind people ripping on my music, only through criticism can one improve and all that.
I just remembered that my first band used to jam Pigface’s “Suck” during several rehearsals. We never played it during an actual gig, but always had fun with it during practice. We played it just like the ‘Welcome To Mexico’ version, which is easily the best one. I always preferred Ogre’s vocals to Trent’s on that tune.
My band used to cover ‘Stigmata’ back in the day…now we’re working on a futurepop/gothy version of ‘Revenge.’ I’ll post it whenever I actually finish the vocals
I sequenced out ‘Same Old Madness’ and thought it would be funny to do a ‘how would current Ministry make this sound’ version but I’m a pretty bad guitar player.
About 13-14 years ago I was asked by the owner of the local rock bar (or rather “grunge bar” since it’s the early nineties we’re talking about ;-)) to put together a band to play Ministry covers on new years’s eve. I programmed the drums and recorded them on a 4-track porta studio. The lineup was two guitars, bass (played by me although I usually play guitar), keyboards and vocals and we played Burning Inside, Deity, (Let’s Get) Physical, NWO, Just One Fix and Stigmata, pretty much the original versions. It was a pretty eventful gig with some drunk guy tipping over the (rented) PA, a chick coming up to dance on stage, one of the guitarists being so wasted we had to lead him on/off stage – I had to tap him on the shoulder everytime he had to change riffs, etc… Good times!
I’ve performed an acoustic version of Revenge, and I enjoy playing a lot of RevCo stuff.
I can play…
So What
Bloodlines
Something Wonderful
Stainless Steel Providers (WHO CAN’T?)
All Day
Deity
Crash and Burn
Stigmata (DRUMS!!!)
Over the Shoulder
Unreason
Ballad
Anthem
Tailor Made
We Shall Cleanse the World
SERGIO!!!
