Was what a snake?
I hate the red Wings they are a total legacy team! I can’t stand legacy teams. Don’t like the Lakers, Dallas cowboys or the Yankees either. (although Kobe and Fisher keep me from liking the Lakers. I used to be all about the Lakers before Kobe came on board! Now I’m not so much a basketball fan anyway, it’s to slow and not enough of a team sport the way hockey is!)
I was really looking forward to the deliciousness of the Coyotes dismantling the red wings and it didn’t happen. Brizgolov probably was too tired I only came into the game at 5-1. apparently the red wings back up goal tender damn near had the shut out. Way to go Back up guy even though I hate your team!
I was only half paying attention when the 6-1 goal was scored. Although, I did see a highlight of some of the previous goals though, Brizy got rebounded hard-core and had no chance at stopping the shot off of his knee pads.

Looked like a fan threw a snake onto the ice. But are you basically saying that you choose to not like a team because they have good players and fan favorites? That’s pretty much what NBA is. It’s the “stars” and nothing but. NHL, not quite. You get the credit you deserve. IF you don’t deserve it, then no one will really care about you. Kobe is a good player, he’s overhyped, but he’s good. No reason to hate a team. Seems a bit ridiculous.
Grumpy Said:

I agree with you man, and legacy teams always attract those fans that just want to go with a winner even if they have no regional or traditional family ties to a particular team.
And Piko Said:
But are you basically saying that you choose to not like a team because they have good players and fan favorites?
No Piko, it goes deeper than that… Sometimes a team has the best players because it’s a rich team from a large-market city that can afford the big salaries. See “New York Yankees” for an example of this.
Although the Yankee’s success in just trying to outright “buy” their championships by hiring free agents has met with mixed success over the years (mostly success, considering they have 27 world series championships, more than any other team) It still pisses me off to see as a baseball fan that the NY Yankees have a salary payroll of nearly TWICE as much as the next contending team, the NY Mets!
Not to mention the Yankees fans are obnoxious assholes who feel ENTITLED to the world series trophy every year, which brings is why you can hate the “fan favorites” as you call them. As I’ve pointed out many of these “fan favorites” will just root for the winners because they are a historically winning team (everyone loves a winner). Sometimes these pricks will be the first to jump ship when their team goes into a slump and jump on the next bandwagon team (Red Sox comes to mind). So yeah, the mindset of fans is important to a teams identity and how one views a team.
Piko continues:
That’s pretty much what NBA is. It’s the “stars” and nothing but. NHL, not quite. You get the credit you deserve. IF you don’t deserve it, then no one will really care about you. Kobe is a good player, he’s overhyped, but he’s good. No reason to hate a team. Seems a bit ridiculous.
Yeah, that is what the NBA seems like… and the NFL to me… certainly more so than hockey or baseball… then again I’m pretty wet behind the ears as a hockey fan, I guess I’d say I know more about baseball than any other sport, but even at that I am no expert… I don’t HATE the Red Wings like I hate the Yankees, and maybe they deserve more respect, but they are also a pain in the ass and a good percentage of their fans are obnoxious and just like them 'cause they win!
So in summary I see your points Piko but think I agree with Grumpy that “Legacy Teams” suck for these reasons:
-
In many cases, “legacy teams” have more money to spend then their rivals on buying free agents or developing talent.
-
Many fans of “legacy teams” feel a sense of entitlement to winning and/or just have a jock, dick mentality of “I’m gonna go with whoever WINS dammit!”. Many of these guys will be the next bandwagon jumpers provided they haven’t already spent a fortune on merchandise for a particular team.
-
Not mentioned early, but “legacy teams” by nature of their legacy tend to be in the playoffs often, which often makes it boring for smaller market teams who are not following a “legacy team” or it’s “legacy rivals”. Thus they are by nature, a constant pain in the ass!
[reply]Did anyone see the Hawks/Predators game last afternoon? Afra?
Yes. It was nuts. They’re nuts here regarding the Hawks. I was driving to the suburbs the other day (I live within the city but was visiting a friend) and on the way back I saw this huge billboard with “HAWKS WIN” on it. Never seen anything like that in any city. Absolutely nuts. Amazing how they have turned the team and the enthusiasm for it around.
Do you live around Chicago?[/reply]
Yeah homes, I live in Dekalb right now, about an hour west of Chicago… moved back from Seattle about a year and 1/2 ago, trying to finish up my B.A. here @ NIU. Do you remember I met you at the Killing Joke concert at the House of Blues a year or so ago? I used to go by “repugnant pete” but had to reinstall windows and forgot the password and email account I had signed up with so had to start a new one.
You’re certainly right about the Yanks. Wasn’t aware it was the same for Detroit too though. Been awhile since I really followed the sport, so i’ve got some catching up to do. The Yanks have to be the worst sports team in the world for that reason though.
That was a way better post than I coulda come up with Dastardly!
- Not mentioned early, but “legacy teams” by nature of their legacy tend to be in the playoffs often,
This is mainly the reason I don’t like Legacy teams. They’re always there! it’s like “you guys again?” let somebody new get in there!
And really, it doesn’t seem like these teams are really spectacular, they seem like they are there just taking up space. Like the fat guy at the buffet elbowing everybody out of the way, we know your fat ass is hungry but so is everybody else so sit down for a bit and take a break!

Not trying to paint with broad strokes here, but the problem I have with Wings/Yankee/Laker/Cowboy fans is that they tend to exhibit a lot of bad sportsmanship at games against opposing fans, as a result of having such a successful team. In short, the winning goes to their heads. The mentality is no longer “I’ll cheer for my team”, instead it’s “I’ll just bag on your team the whole game, because you don’t have the same level of success, and we’ve been around since the Great Depression”. I’ve been to games with all of these fans present, and the popular move is to dust off the trophy case and count their championships, which in my opinion, is about the lamest move in the book.
I don’t know how many times I’ve heard “How many rings/cups do the Suns/Coyotes have? Oh yeah, none!”, but it’s such a lazy comment. Seriously Wings Fan, the Cup you won in 2008 means nothing to the 2010 playoffs. Can you tell I heard a bunch of shit at these games? I had Wings fans behind me at Game 5, doing nothing the whole game but talking shit about the Coyotes, and not really even rooting for the Wings.
They’re the kind of opposing fans you can’t even have an intelligent conversation with. Much like Laker Fan, who spends half the game turning around and popping their Kobe jersey at the opposing fans…at road games! Even Yankee Fan was still talking crap after just getting beat by AZ in the ‘01 World Series, because they have 27 rings, and we have one (from one of the best WS Game 7’s ever). There’s a reason the Wings’, Lakers’, Yanks’ and Cowboys’ fans have bad reputations. They call other fans “jealous” for hating their teams, but it’s really just their arrogance that puts everyone off. That’s why I love it when those teams lose, it shuts up their a-hole fans, at least for a little while.

I’m too stressed about tonight’s game. This city is going crazy. Would be so nice to see the Canadiens take it. Here’s hoping. I’m just wondering if there are going to be any riots as per the norm.
ps. no one mentioned in the above posts that the Canadiens have 24 cups to their name!
Yes I do remember meeting you - ahh, makes sense! Well you’ll have to let me know if you’re back in the area and are going to shows or anything.
Also, don’t stress out about tonight’s game. Whatever happens, the season restarts in 3 months. Not like Soccer or other leagues

Thought Hockey was looking at another possible lock out next season… am I thinking of another sport?
BTW EmSeaEye there’s 7 to go inthe 3rd. I’m pulling for you. I gotta say only been watching for 10 minutes but damn has your goalie put up with some abuse! BE the wall goalie man!

That’s enough time out of the light to make a new appearance!

THE CAPS ARE DONE. Wow.
So, Round 2 is:
Philadelphia vs. Boston
Montreal vs. Pittsburgh
Detroit vs. San Jose
Vancouver vs. Chicago
Goddamned Coyotes, I’m loving these playoffs, and they go lay a turd in Game 7. I don’t need to tell you how much last night sucked. Go Sharks…I guess.

holy crap. never thought we’d do it.
way too much stress though. my heart was racing for the entire third period. (beer may have helped that though…)
Although, out of the frying pan, into the fire. Penguins now. No rest for the wicked I guess.
Need to try and score playoff tickets for this round on Saturday.
Anyone just catch that second montreal goal? Fucking nice!
I sure did!
As much as I like the legacy team, i’m really pulling for the canucks to take this thing. It’d be awesome for vancouver and montreal to take the finals. Sharks and Wings are neck and neck right now. Good times.
Holy crap! Game 7 again!
Quite proud of my Habs I am!

You should be. They played the hell out of that game. The end of the
second was pretty nice. It’d be nice for them to beat pitts. I’m moreso pulling for canucks, but I dunno. It’s looking like a san jose/chicago.
