Ehhhh… I thought the movies had a leg-up over the books, in that there’s actual character development there. The books are good, but very, VERY dry. There’s also several WTF moments that don’t occur in the movies, like Tom Bombadil and the budding semi-homosexual relationship between Sam and Frodo. (I shit you not.)

What the fuck were you watching? I think the movies made it pretty clear that they were secretly gay.

“Snakes! Guillotines! Electric Chairs!: My Adventures in the Alice Cooper Group” by Dennis Dunaway.
I just bought it yesterday, so I can’t tell you much about it yet. I’m better at buying books than reading them. I need to start over on my Billy Idol book since I let it cool down too long and now don’t remember any of the beginning (I think I got about a 1/3 in).
Brandon Sanderson-Mistborn
Have mostly been re-reading stuff from my library.
Worked up a very rare appetite for more ‘epic fantasy’ after becoming disillusioned with the Throne Games series (all my favorite characters now beheaded, stabbed to death, burned alive etc.)…read through Tolkien’s “Silmarillion” which is not just the source of some 10,000 metal band names, but some of the most beautiful and fluid English-language writing ever done.
And, back to mundane reality, have returned to Alexander Trocchi’s “Cain’s Book,” maybe the best-written piece of junkie literature outside of Burroughs’ “Naked Lunch”. Too bad it is the only thing Trocchi ever managed outside of some porn novels written under amusing pseudonyms like Carmencita de las Lunas.
I’m better at buying books than reading them.
Same here. I wish I was a faster reader with more time on my hands.
I’m rereading The Long Walk by Stephen King. Not a huge fanatic of his, but this was one of my favorite books by him.

Have you checked out the Dark Tower series yet? Those are by far my favorite Stephen King books.

Oh snap, I had no idea that existed. That’s going on the list.
Did you ever read “Me, Alice,” Alice Cooper’s long out of print autobiography from the '70s? It goes for hundreds of dollars now, but I was lucky enough to go to a college with a library that had it. It includes the profoundly disturbing revelation that Alice used to jack off into jelly donuts and give them to his sister.

How is it? Haven’t got around to that one…I read just about every book where the subject matter is cults…I have read every book on Jonestown that exists…
Rev: I’m aware OF the “Me, Alice” book and the crazy prices it commands on EBay/ Amazon, etc., but, no, I’ve never had a copy or read it myself.

Doesn’t cover a whole lot that 100 other books in the past 45 years haven’t, except that it has lots of previously unrevealed info about his childhood. The author actually tracked down and interviewed Manson’s real life family members, schoolmates, etc.

OH MAN DON’T GET ME STARTED. I have yet to read a better fantasy series. Fuck the complaints about the ending, I thought it was perfect. And they better not fucking make a movie out of it. It would only ruin it. (I can imagine guy’s dates cooing over a CGI Oy now.)
Right now, I’m reading “Swan Song” by Robert McCammon. Similar to King’s “The Stand” (epic end of the world book) but this is nuclear war instead of a superflu, so the environment is considerably more hostile…

It had the best ending for anything ever, at least IMO. Rumor has it that the movie/series is still happening, but I’ll believe it when I see it. Oy is my favorite character, and I wouldn’t mind if he’s CG, just along as they make him match up with the books. If they get the right director, I think The Drawing of Three and The Waste Lands would make for some EPIC movies.

I did hear about the movie (I keep my ear to the ground for all things Stephen King related, especially if they’re Tower-related). My problem with the movie - and associated TV series - is that the series doesn’t really start (in the first book, “The Gunslinger”) with a bang. It’s got some great moments - the Slow Mutants, Roland fucking the demon, the shoot-out in Tull - but not only won’t it hook non-Tower junkies… not only does it end with a fucking CONVERSATION… but I think Roland’s decision to sacrifice Jake will really turn off non-fans to Roland and the series in general.
If they DO make a movie, and Flagg isn’t played by Charles Dance, there is no justice. (They’ve supposedly tapped McCounaghey - sp? - for Flagg in “The Stand,” which would work for that movie, but not the Tower.)
Damn, Rev!
I can’t find “Me, Alice” for less than $400!
I won’t be adding that to my library, haha.

He has one that he did about 6 or 7 years back called “Golf Monster” which I hear is a pretty all-encompassing autobiography, but I’ve yet to pick it up solely because the title is so lame and golf is stupid. If I ever see it for $6 or less I’ll grab it.
If there are any Alice fans that have not yet seen “Super Duper Alice Cooper” you should rectify that immediately. It’s really good.

Ha! I’ve felt the exact same way about Golf Monster. I never bothered, because I always assumed it was more golf than monster.
Haven’t seen Super Duper Alice Cooper, but I do have the surprisingly difficult to sit through Good To See You Again Alice Cooper on DVD.
