I always figured since he’s got SO many goddamn books, he MUST be a hack, but my gf and several others have been on me to read more of his stuff, and damned if this one ain’t really good. On page 980 of the super-long version…
The Tao of Daily Life
Transform Your Life
Tao Te Ching
bouncing back and forth between the 3.
on my amazon wishlist, have two biographies: one of Fela Kuti, the other of Sun Ra. I own neither’s records, but have been playing the hell out of them on youtube and certainly have an interest, both seem like interesting individuals.
can’t wait to get a Tablet in the next year or so to switch to digital books.

I just got an iPad and I love it for digital books and comics! A Fela Kuti bio sounds really interesting, do you know the name? I know his life was turbulent to say the least.
I’m just finishing a Ram Dass book about the Bhagavad Gita, it’s great and I’m impressed he doesn’t hide his past with Leary & co.
Also reading a random Dungeons & Dragons novel and just started reading Ender’s Shadow outloud with my girlfriend.
Trying to decide what to follow the Ram Dass book with, will have to do an Amazon crawl.
Just vinished Caribou Island by David Vann. It was quite poor, unfortunately. Not a patch on Legend of a Suicide
Started reading Hellhound on his Trail: The Stalking of Martinl Luther King Jr. and the International Hunt for his Assassin by Hampton Sides. It’s really cool. Very exciting historical narrative.
Recently finished April 1865, the Month that Saved America by Jay Winik which was enjoyable.
I guess I did start Chuck Palahniuk’s “Invisible Monsters” the other day when I left “The Stand” sitting on my desk at work. Just a couple chapters into that one, will finish that up when I’m done with this one.
Recently read “The Winds of War” and “War and Remembrance”, and on the dry side, “Uniform Federal Accessibility Standards.”
On the biography tip, “The First American” about Benjamin Franklin was a great read. I was raised believing that I was a direct male-line (until my grandmother) descendant of BF (and great-grandpa Franklin was the spitting image of him, sho’ ‘nuff), but my understanding now is that all his children’s children died out and the only people related to him today are through his siblings’ kids.
This makes 3 autobiography/memoir books in a row, the others being “The Autobiography of Mark Twain” and “Hitch-22” by Christopher Hitchens. I’m itchin’ to read some fiction soon.
No. I hardly even read one at a time. I buy a book here and there when I go on travel. I typically get about 1/2 way through and then lose it or just stop for no reason.
I’ll usually start a book, get really passionate about it, and then quit. Then I’ll pick it up again a few months or years later to finally finish it.
Just finished
“Christiane F”
Not a bad read. If you like books about addiction, this is a must. Its about a 14 year old German Girl who was hooked on H and supported the habit by prostitution. Based on a true story. From what I have seen, this was a huge book (and later film) in Europe, but harldy made a dent here in the states.
blind willow, sleeping woman. a collection of short stories by haruki murakami. halfway through. interesting enough but…i think i would rather read novels and non-fiction, despite the greatness of murakami. his novels have very few ,if no rivals.
btw wempathy, i went through a few years of reading nothing but biographies and autobiographies. count some down:roman, by polanski; edie (the saga of the life and times of edie sedgwick-curiously related to kyra sedgwick of “the closer” fame , who is curiously related to kevin bacon. married. lots of years;,)poor little rich girl, the life and legend of barbara hutton;liberace(autobiography);katherine anne porter “a life”;“keeping faith”- memoirs of a president. jimmy carter.
my favorite was edie.
in a not so similar vein, i attempted to read "memoirs of a geisha "and found it staged, and pretty boring.
give me murakami. NOW,
Game of Thrones on HBO is awesome so I picked up the books, on the second right now. the imp is amazing.
The series is so good isn’t it? I missed episode 9 but have to catch it before episode 10 (the last sniff sniff) goes out on Monday.
Did you hear Ned Stark (or Sean Bean) was in a scuffle the other day; he was stabbed with a broken bottle whilst defending a porn star or something. He wasn’t injured badly anyway and ordered another drink.

ha yeah a model i read. some dude made some comments to her whilst they were all outside smoking, and sean bean chased him off. dude came back with a broken bottle or something.
i would have to say that the show game of thrones is the most faithful adaptation of any book i have ever seen. you could literally watch the first season and know what’s happening if you pick up the second book.
although intimidating (1200 pages, anyone?), i would recommend picking up the books. If you have the time for reading, you’ll burn through these, There is a lot of detail or “flavor text” in the books that is rewarding, especially regarding Tyrion, the Imp. I think he is my fav character so far, and he just keeps getting better.
I also just picked up a huge book of alternate histories, but i don’t think i’ll be getting to it very soon. also just finished clive barker’s “damnation game”. LOVE barker. all kinds of them.
