[reply]Never thought Ministry fans would be so into hip-hop. Really interesting
I always look at music like this… there’s two types of music: good and bad.[/reply]
Agreed. I can’t stand most rap music, but there are a few albums out there I appreciate and enjoy from time to time. Arrested Development’s first album and Public Enemy’s It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back come to mind, as well as Straight Outta Compton by NWA. Above The Law’s “Freedom Of Speech” is a cool tune, as is Merlin’s “Drop The Pressure”. I also like Beastie Boys, and pretty much all the rap tunes in the movie Office Space (except for Take This Job and Shove It).
Rap’s gotten a bad name from what RZA calls R’n’B - Rap and Bullshit. There’s a lot of good underground and old rap/hip hop with true MCs, who also possess brilliant production talents. They invented the concept of remixing and sampling.
Edit: soul driver, I agree: Liquid Swords is a classic album. I won’t ever get bored of that. GZA’s lyrics/MCing and RZA’s production - it rarely gets better than that. GZA calls himself Genius - he is right…
Marillion - “Brave”
5ive’s Continuum Research Project - “The Hemophiliac Dream”
Lurker Of Chalice - S/T
Ice - “Under The Skin”
NFD - “No Love Lost”
+whatever unsigned bands send me to review
As with most music i like the rap i heard back in high school better than anythng out now… my personal fav rap record is A Tribe Called Quest’s first cd “People’s Instinctive Travels & The Paths Of Rhythm”. i’m also fond of some older rap like EMPD, Eric B. & Rakim, Del tha funkee homosapien, and wu-tangs first cd.
shit if you guys like rap and want something with a heaping of interesting influences go get some DALEK, these guys are pretty sick and did a fucking split with faust. there are a couple other acts doing the more intelligent rap music route, hahaha.
ATCQ are great! Can’t decide from their first 3 albums which one I like best. I most own at least 100 hip hop cds…Mos Def has been getting alot of plays lately, especially his experimental “the new danger” which has tons of rock (hendrix_ influence, blues, jazz, and other styles. Really great stuff. I love alll of Outkast’s stuff too.
as of right now:
animositisimonia
