I like Run The Jewels too. Just listened to them recently and was pleased to find some current hip hop that I like.
Do you have any other suggestions?
My girlfriend likes Run The Jewels. Not too familiar. Hip hop - not really what I’m running for.
Give it a spin I suppose. Some of what she has in her collection gets the thumbs up.
Yeah, KD’s House Of God, really forgettable going through the motion.

Lately I’ve had a boner for Quicksilver Messenger Service and related acts/ musicians. I didn’t even know of their existence before hearing about them in Dennis Dunaway’s (bass, original Alice Cooper group) autobiography. They are on a whole other level. John Cippolina (guitar) is a fucking mad Scientist on the axe, but literally everyone in the band is absolute master status. If anyone likes psychedelic blues rock, these guys are fucking GOLD.
I know I discussed with Queer Bait and maybe others about also recently discovering Robin Trower, and QMS is basically the US branch of that tree that sprouts free form heavy soulful brilliance
Oh yeah man QMS and a lot of stuff coming out of the bay area at that time was great…that band had some balls and never got too hippy dippy on you…
Yeah Trower is still a monster in his mid 70s…saw him a couple of yrs back and he was masterful…I really dig his stuff with Procol Harum also…
Thanks! You might’ve mentioned the Procol connection before and I’d forgotten. They come up when I’m streaming stuff in my wife’s car. I’ll pay attention and dig a bit deeper on that.
But goddamn, how is QMS not known by literally everyone? I think some bands/artists are just TOO good and people aren’t ready for that level. It blows my mind that I’d never even heard of them until reading Dennis’ book.
Santana led me to QMS back in the day and that led me into a deep dive into all those bay area bands of the era…Moby Grape,Electric Flag,Blue Cheer etc etc…but yeah QMS had something special…and they really stretched out live…their late 60s-early 70s studio and live stuff is flawless…amazing they never got the acclaim that bands of that scene like the Dead and Airplane got…
Fun fact: John Cipollinas brother Mario is an original member of Huey Lewis and the News!!! Haha…
Haha! That’s pretty funny. I wonder if John hated his guts. John’s absolutely decimating on stage and just slaying with his ace… whilst wallowing in relative obscurity. Then his fuckface brother’s band is riding the charts and driving home dump trucks of money with… “Hip To Be Square” and “The Zpower of Love”.
Patrick Bateman may have something to say about that😃!!!
But yeah seriously…what an injustice…
John died in his mid 40s from some kind of lung disease if memory serves…
I didn’t do the math on his age, or remember his birthdate, but that sounds about right as I believe I noticed he passed around 1989. If it’s any consolation for him, he looked fucking awesome with his cigarettes, hahaha!
I was actually surprised when I learned QMS were an SF area band. They put so much muscle and sweat into their gigs that I just assumed they were a Detroit band, haha.
