Roy harper…the game pt 1-5

Been listening to the new Samael album “Above”. Its pretty good if you are into really punishing black metal but more importantly, it made me go back to “Ceremony of Opposites”. Damn, what an evil and pitch black album that is!

‘Escape From New York’ O.S.T.

A gem.

Samael huh?! Sounds interesting.

You should check out a band called Mantak.

They are a black metal band from the Phillipines - but don’t let that fool you. Their album ‘Polymorphous Perversion’ is some of the best and most evil sounding black metal I have ever heard. And I’ve heard tons of black metal.

Got it for US$5 on ebay. Best bargain ever.

Everybody MUST check them out.

I gave it a listen and I think we must have very different tastes in black metal since (at least after one listen) Mantak sounds like pretty run of the mill black metal with thrash elements. It didn’t sound particularly evil to me although it did have a dose of juvenile energy that is appealing to a certain extent in the more raw forms of black metal…

That’s interesting, considering I’m particularly fussy with black metal and I really like this.

Hmmmm…

What are some good black metal bands then??

Have you heard:

Satanic Warmaster
Impaled Nazarene
Arkhon Infaustus
Leviathan
Woodtemple
Graveland
Archgoat
MZ 412
Watain

??

I heard some of those bands, but not all. Some BM I like:
Weakling
Thorns
Mayhem
Glorior Belli
Enslaved
Anaal Nathrakh

Edit: No idea what you attitude towards downloading albums is; however, a great blog that ive been using for a while for black metal is http://www.prongs.org/mp3/links/?url=65

Edit: No idea what you attitude towards downloading albums is…

I’m a hardcore record collector, so I’m very much against it. I think it cheapens the entire process. Refuse to download.

I spend around (AU)$500 a month on records/cds - but have been known to spend around (AU)$300 in one go.

I understand where you are coming from, I used to collect records myself and still know a lot of people who do. Nevertheless, ever since I discovered that:
-its easier to take an external hard drive with you to another country than 3000 CDs
-it is a lot easier to browse Winamp’s library than to organize everything alphabetically manually in a CD rack
-modern mp3 players sound as good as CD players
I decided to convert my entire music collection into digital form.

I still like to pay for music that I really like, since I think the artists should be rewarded for their work. I therefore have no problem with using iTunes, Amazon or eMusic to get music if what Im looking for is available there. If the artist provides a download from their own website, that is even better since my money goes directly to them. Nevertheless, I find physical mediums to be terribly outdated for me.

Severed Heads - op4 Optimum

Even though the band is officially dead, this is a series of albums that are a work in progress that is constantly shifting and changing. Tom has over half the tracks up remastered, and/or remixed for download.

Listening to Ry Cooders Mambo Sinuendo at the moment…

As for vinyl…vinyl is the way to go.

I feel violated when I have to buy a cd…once in a blue moon I’ll download something or buy a cd.

Vinyl is the new…er, vinyl.

<falls flat on face>

there is a sound quality attached to vinyl. forget the audio fixes for vocals programs and all that jive. listen to an old blues recording and listen to a new one. the new one’s are sanitized. i don’t like listening to blues records but that may be the most obvious example of what happens when things get cleaned up in a studio and no vinyl around for the actual record of what this felt like when it went down.
