I definitely like that discordant piano all through it but This one didn’t hit me as hard as Fake Plastic Trees. Not sure why… Maybe I had shit going on in college when I was listening to FPT and the memory of what sucked has left but the feeling of the suckiness is wrapped up into the song and since I don’t listen to that song all that often, now Instead of remembering what sucked at the time of the song I just remember the feeling (But it’s hella fucking strong). Who knows? I love music for basically that ability. There’s nothing like music for capturing a mood, or a feeling, or moment in time that, if you don’t wear it out, can take you right back just by hearing the song.
Smells do that too. A really good time in my life was 1998. I used to work at a Lake and I would wear speed stick ocean surf deodorant. I haven’t worn it since. I hadn’t heard of it in ages and had forgotten about it because it was really a terrible deodorant, it’d stop working 1/2 way through the day. But a couple months back I saw a stick of it in a CVS or rite aid, so I pulled the cap off to see if it still smelled the same and oh my god, time warp, I was instantly transported back to 1998 for a few moments. thoughts, memories, and feelings I hadn’t thought of or felt in ages smashed through my brain like a bulldozer, and for a brief moment, based on that smell, I was there again. Closest fucking thing to time travel.
If I listen to a song too often it will lose it’s Historical (For lack of a better word) impact but occasionally I run into songs that I haven’t listened to in a long time and all the emotion and memories locked into that song comes flooding back 100%. Still kinda works for songs that I have worn out but then put on a shelf for a while, when I go back to them, It’s all back.
What you said x 1000. I could make a list of songs that take me back to various points in my life, from early adolescence on. I don’t do the time warp as much as I used to, but I can definitely draw lines from life events to certain tunes.
And you’re right about smells. The smell of anti-zit medication takes me back to those circular pads dripping with harsh chemicals that were all the rage in 92-93 (I can’t remember the name of the manufacturer), which in turn leads me back to when I was using them and really opening myself up to music for the first time. I mean, I had been a big fan of certain bands (REM, Depeche Mode, Pink Floyd) up until 93, but 93 was when I became the kind of guy who wanders around a record store for hours and then buys 3 CDs on a hunch. One day I bought Primus’ “Pork Soda,” Porno For Pyros’ s/t first album (no idea who Jane’s Addiction was, either), and Dinosaur Jr’s “Where You Been,” and that goddamn zit med smell takes me back to all 3.
Its a mixture of stuff…nothing as aggressive as prime Whigs stuff…some upbeat stuff and some dusky, late night burners…he started out doing all the instruments himself and then had some guests come in later and lay down some stuff…some great sounding strings and horns…I need to spin it a few more times but first listen was really great…
Time Machines is straight up perfection for me, just takes the world away.
I’ve been listening to Four Tet, his new ones great and I picked up his discography on Bandcamp for half price (last big purchase I’m allowing myself until the apocalypse is over) and there’s a lot of good stuff to dig through of his I hadn’t heard before.
Tycho - Simulcast
Trickfinger - Trickfinger II (John Frusciante electronic music album.)
Pearl Jam - gigaton
i enjoy early pearl jam. I lost touch with them after the “Yield” album. I’m only on my first pass of the new one, but it’s different. some sequencing even. it’s also a little more psychedelic than anything they’ve done.
(edit: eh, again first pass, but the PJ album kind of gets tired at the end. first half isn’t bad. will listen more)
I never got into Pearl Jam. Nothing about them ever appealed to me. Not even their singles do anything for me. I understand theyre good at what they do but it’s just nor for me.
