What are you listening to right now?

Black Sabbath

I thought I’d diversify a little from my habit of just listening to Danzig.

So this week I’m listening to Iggy Pop as well as Danzig.

I like it. There are some songs that I absolutely adore and some that are whatever. And some that kind of make me shake my head. Yes, the production is shit, but worse than that is that musical cancer cell known as Tommy Victor. If I could fire a laser at his hands to make sure he never played another note on another Danzig song for as long as he lived . . . I’d shoot it a million times just to be safe.

And don’t get me started on the cover art, hahahaha!!!

But, yeah, basically I love it.
A few standout tracks off the top of my head . . .
“Crying in the Rain”
“Let Yourself Go”
“Lord Of The Thighs”

That Danzig album is great from start to finish, i don’t think there’s a weak track on it and there’s other songs recorded for it that didn’t make the cut that were also great. Even if he only did cover records from now on, i’d be happy enough if they were as good as Skeletons. The production doesn’t bother me at all, and i do like Tommy Victor’s guitar playing, but anyone i know that’s heard it has definitely commented on how rough the production is. To me it’s kinda similar to the way he recorded his vocals on Lost Tracks, which sorta bothered me when i first heard that album but i got used to it.

Also - Gunnar, i also realised a while ago that i needed to listen to more than just Danzig, so AC/DC is my weapon of choice these past few months, non-fucking-stop AC/DC, mainly the Bon Scott era. Their track Night Prowler sounds like it directly inspired about 90% of Danzig’s first 2 albums, what an amazing song.

Maybe it’s just Rick Rubin’s production and the fact that he was a massive AC/DC fan, but i definitely notice a similarity in their sound. I read an interview with Eerie Von once that said something like “Rick has exactly two styles of production: Sabbath/Led Zep and AC/DC”, and Chuck Biscuits complained that Rubin wasted a long time trying to capture the exact AC/DC drum sound on the first Danzig album. Think that might have been in Eerie’s picture book that he released, possibly.

It’s to Rubin’s great credit that he heard those Samhain records and said “I bet I can turn this guy into Elvis singing for AC/DC…”

Johnny Ramone - the final session

AC/DC - highway to hell

Night Prowler is a great song.
And it would definitely be a great one for Glenn to cover.
It’s dirty, dark and sexy and also sorta wrong, hahaha!!!

We’ll have to share notes this weekend on the tracks you’re talking about that didn’t make the cut, as I’m not certain I’m aware of all of them.

I do ADORE his “Always On My Mind” cover which I thought was just a taste of his future Elvis covers album, but I’ve honestly not kept up with the rumor mill, so I’m not totally certain that everything is still on course as originally discussed.

Anyway, Danzig and AC/DC is not a bad playlist at all, haha!

I’ve been sitting here wracking my brain trying to remember what songs weren’t on there and i think i’ve misremembered. Always On My Mind was one of them, but now that you mention it maybe it was actually for the Elvis album. That other version of Satan is another - but now that i’ve had time to think, was it maybe included on the album as a bonus track? The other one i remembered was his duet with Melissa Auf Der Maur, which i realise now was for her album. In short, my memory has been playing tricks on me, hahaha.

Some Velvet Morning w/Cherie Currie was definitely meant to be on there but the rights were apparently withdrawn and they couldn’t include it. It’s on Youtube though, it’s very good.

Haha, what a fantastic description, absolutely perfectly sums the first 2 albums up [:)]

I wish that album would get a little more love in the live shows.
