WALL OF VOODOO/ ANDY PRIEBOY

Sorry about derailing the Black Sabbath thread. Since I guess I’m not the only one in this lonely world that likes this stuff, I figured I may as well try having a thread for it.

Feel free to fag out on Wall of Voodoo, Andy Prieboy, or even Stan Ridgway stuff (solo, Drywall, etc.).

Sadly, there is very little live footage of Andy performances, but here’s a nice one that does a pretty good job capturing his intensity.

I’m behind this…deserves it’s own thread…

Btw,I’ve been wanting to read that book of his…tried to get it once(can’t remember where)and it said it was on back order…wonder if it’s still in print?

I think it’s out of print but you can pick it up cheap.

I don’t think my copy made my last move, but if I still have it laying around somewhere I’ll send it to you.

Oh, HELLZ YEAH!!!

Looks like ALL of the WOV stuff has had a re-issue (I’m only missing Dark Continent on CD as it was selling on Ebay for like $300 – same with Sammystown).

Also, what the heck is this???

I knew about Eye Protection (never heard anything, though), but Torch? HAHAHA!!! WTF???

Don’t get suckered into bidding. It’s just an ad, not the record.

EDIT: Wait. Nevermind. It’s just an ad for them “signing” Andy and TORCH is apparently a completely separate group.

Didn’t we have a thread discussing Wall Of Voodoo? Nevermind.

I love WOV and never got why they never got way bigger than they did, unfortunately that happened to a lot of 80s acts, Faith No More, Talk Talk etc… damn shame.

I will have to get these re-issues!

IF there was a WOV thread it was either before my time or when I wasn’t around because I would have had PLENTY to say on the topic. Wall of Voodoo was the first band I became obsessed with and I still hold them in great regard as the unsung heroes of rock and roll. I ike Stan Ridgway too, but in my book the excellence of Andy Prieboy is just unmatched.

As for the singers’ solo careers, Andy has been nothing but pure class, through and through. Stan had a solid run, but started suckin’ dust after “Black Diamond”. He had some album called “Snake Bites and Highway Ballads” or some crap (I don’t know what the actual title was) and it was pure dog crap. I don’t know what he’s done since then. His first stuff with “Drywall” was pretty good, though.

Anyway, I should probably pick up this conversation when I’m sober…

I’m thinking I should be sober also…and that won’t happen tonight…

This thread should not die…

I bought like 6 or 7 CD’s about 5 or 6 years back directly from Birdcage Records (they were putting out a bunch of Stan’s stuff as well as related stuff with Pietra Wexsun and whatnot). IT WAS 99% DOGCRAP and I dumped it along with a bunch of other crap back to Amoeba.

Stan’s early solo stuff is really good, especially “The Big Heat” and “Mosquitoes”. “Drywall” had a great debut album too. Other than that, he’s old, too far up his own ass, and boring as heck. It’s amazing how many releases he’s put out in the past 5-10 years. Many are just live recordings of various shows he’s done. Most of them seem to be garbage.

Andy, on the other hand, seems to prefer to hide under a rock and doesn’t even like his stuff being on YouTube. Lame.

I didn’t think I’d ever get the chance to see him live, but Andy announced two gigs in LA. One in July and one in August. I just checked the venue . . . . CAPACITY 99!!!

Hell yeah!!! This is gonna kick ass!!!

Fuck yeah,man!!..Have a good time,Gunnar…it was time for this thread to be revived…

Check out these bootleg buttons I bought off Ebay from a gal in Hong Kong. They’re totally badass.

Saw Andy perform live last night and it was AMAZING! It was a small intimate theatre and the sound was perfect. I sat in the front row which was about 5 feet from the stage. He had a bass player and drummer accompanying him while he sang and played electric piano.

I wish I hadn’t drank so much because I would like to have remembered better all the funny stories he was telling and what the set list was.

He signed my poster and was very gracious to all the fans that wanted to meet him and/or talk to him. I didn’t take a picture with him as he’s really weird about stuff like that.

Before the gig I was hanging outside in a small courtyard patio area waiting for the doors to open. Bruce Moreland (Wall of Voodoo bassist) recognized me immediately and we started talking. What an awesome dude! I can’t remember the name of the lady that was with him but she was a real sweetheart too.

The set was a mixture of Wall of Voodoo stuff, his older solo stuff, and his new songs.

I was in Mexico earlier this month and I saw lots of iguanas.
I wondered what they tasted like barbecued.

^
I go to Tijuana all the time. I should ask the locals where to find the best barbecued iguana.

So, I saw a second Prieboy concert on Thursday night. I brought my father with me this time. He also had a blast. I was a little nervous at how I might be received upon my return since I was completely tanked at the last one and may have burned bridges before finishing building them. But as soon as we arrived I saw the same pre-show super-fan crew from last time and they were excited to see me and shouted my name. I introduced my pop and we all caught up a bit and chatted about last month’s gig and the upcoming show.

We opted to take a seat a few rows back this time, instead of dead front . . . for obvious reasons. I think it also gave us a better overall stage view, which was nice because there were a lot of times where Andy was playing jokes off his bassist and drummer and it was fun to watch the tall golem-like bassplayer stand there with an “I’m not amused” expression on his face.

I’m glad I was sober this time as the stories that Andy tells which give personal insight to both him and his songs are really fantastic. He had a bit of a setlist, but would also go off the map when he’d get sidetracked and decide to play something else for us. There was a really intimate and close connection between the audience and Andy that he seemed to really feed off of.

Bruce Moreland was there again and he kind of rolled his eyes a bit when I saw him so I think he may have regretted sitting too close to me last time.

During the show Andy told a story about how his 80 year old father whom he never got along with so well and gambled away all his money had gotten a leather jacket from one of the casinos and he was convinced this was a ROCKSTAR jacket and that Andy should have it so he could properly dress the part. He then retrieves this hideous, red, blue, white, gold, and every other color of the shit rainbow jacket which is adorned with all these gambling clichés . . . . cards, dice, chips, cash, etc. He put it on once and proclaimed sarcastically, “Pretty fuckin’ badass, huh?” He stated he would never again put on that jacket and proceeded to state that, while he is typically notoriously camera shy and does not allow pictures he would allow photos for people tonight . . . IF THEY WORE THE JACKET. Well, you can bet your ass I took him up on that offer, as did a good handful of others too.

This isn’t a complete list, but it’s what I can recall and name . . .
