Trax! Box Q & A

Have these recordings (rock and roll amphibian) ever surfaced? I would love to hear them.

I believe it was supposed to be the Chicago 1992 show. It’s out there, just not very common.

“Stick” is what became “I Will Refuse.” How that slipped from Al’s “vault” to Connelly’s is unknown to me.

According to Connelly:
“Is this the Revolting Cocks? I don’t know, but it was the first thing I ever recorded with Al and this was recorded about two hours after I first met the guy. I had visited the WaxTrax! office in London to try and drum up interest in Fini Tribe. I was already a fan of the “Big Sexy Land” record by the Cocks, and when I heard that Al was in the studio downstairs, I asked if I could meet him. Upon meeting him, he immediately suggested going to the pub – this was about 11 in the morning. By 5 PM, I was layering vocals on what would eventually become “I Will Refuse” by Pailhead, with the wonderful Iain Mackay singing. No one seems to remember the exact personnel on this recording (gleaned here from a very cheap cassette – the only document of this song) but Bill Rieflin thinks it is just he and Al, with Roland Barker on sax. After I was done, a very drunk Connelly had to run to catch the Tube to take me to the bus, which was leaving to go back up north to Scotland. Kind of a perfect ending to a beginning…”

A most glorious sentence.

sure, that’s a source of information. But, for me, Al and Chris are unreliable narrators of the Ministry mythos.

Ice mentioned elsewhere that We Shall Cleanse The World (Razormaid Mix) is much shorter on the Trax Box. I checked my old mp3 from years back, and it clocks in at 7:53, whereas the Trax Box mix is 5:13. Guessing this was edited down to fit on the CD.

I posted a link to the full version on the For Links thread

That’s my guess too. They are the same up until 5:13, which is were the Cleo version fades out, leaving out the last verse completely.

With the new lyrics and all, I’ve always wondered how this was an authorized remix in the first place. Did Razormaid have access to the multitracks of a demo/early version?

A friend in MSP found it for half off ($86).

It arrived yesterday, but I haven’t opened it yet.

Late to the party, but I’ve been bumping this for months.

Aside from the absolute butchering on the Razormaid mix and the weird and questionable fades on the live Cocks disc, this box is fantastic. Self-Annoyed is easily the coolest thing included, and makes me wonder what other cool things from the Twitch/LOR&H era Al is holding out from us. My personal favorite of the unreleased stuff, however, is I’d Do Anything For You. It’s suuuuuch a banger, Goddamn.

In the original post, realmdemagic says that Al released a version of that with a slightly different mix. Could someone hook me up with a link?

The version of I See Red might be one of my favotite songs of all time.

This one is a free mp3 on Al’s official download page. Here’s everything he’s posted. Anything for You is second to last on the page. https://al-jourgensen.squarespace.com/downloads/

Thanks, boss. Cheers!

Cool video! I need to make my way to Chicago someone time soon. I think it’s been two decades since I’ve been there.

I haven’t spent much time there this decade; but would still recommend it - easily one of the 4-5 best cities in the U.S. for live music; a show at the Metro can make even some of the worst bands seem dignified.

Overall I feel like the city has less distinct character than it did in the 80s and 90s, but that may just be a nationwide phenomenon rather than a Chicago-exclusive thing.

Let me know if and when you plan a trip, and I can recommend some venues and neighborhoods that might not make it into the usual Lonely Planet / Rough Guide types of publications.

Will do! Their music scene will definitely be the first thing I check out whenever I do make it over there again.

Thanks for the info. [:)]

Has anyone else’s Chicago 1982 LP sleeve come unglued along the edge yet? I’m wondering if I should try to repair it, or just leave it like that if the entire pressing is like this.

Mine is fine.

I repair LP sleeves all the time, just take out the old glue and apply a thin line of elmer’s glue. It only takes a few minutes to dry.

use a glue stick

Totally sweet, man…that freakin Box rules the universe! [angelic]

Came across a cool interview with Mike Lopez, who designed the packaging for Trax! Box.
