I realize this may be too hard for the US or British members of this site as there would be way too many to choose from. Maybe you could limit it to your state? Anyways… any genre or style, popular or not, even local bands…
For me: (Canada)
Skinny Puppy (obviously)
3 Inches of Blood
Me Mom and Morgentaler - party ska would be the best way to describe them
The Kingpins - classic ska
Angry White Mob - industrial kinda KMFDM-FLA ish…
Mão Morta (Dead Hand)
They started in 1984 because one of them met the Swans bassist Harry Crosby at a concert in Berlin and Crosby said that he had a bass player face. So he came back to Portugal and without knowing how to play any instrument he started mão morta with two friends.
They have a very charismatic vocalist (Adolfo Luxúria Canibal), who writes extremely well, and his known for one time cut himself in the leg during a concert and had to be taken to the hospital. Later he said he wanted to calm down the audience with his blood.
Being born and raised in Auckland, New Zealand (before being shipped off to live with my dad in L.A and then marrying and settling down in Melbourne, Australia) I’d like to put forward The Dead C.
Look them up if you are not familiar with them.
And I’d like to publicly apologise for Shihad on behalf of my fellow Kiwis.
And I’d like to publicly apologise for Grinspoon on behalf of my fellow Aussies.
And to all you Aussies who forgot to mention SPK and The Go Betweens…shame on you!!!
Top bands from my state?
Mastodon
Drive By Truckers
Cat Power
Danger Mouse/Gnarls Barkley
I dunno, I don’t really like a lot of stuff from my state.
All of those bands I know the name, but most of them I have actually never heard. Mastodon I know as I played a show over a decade ago with half of the band when they were called Four Hour Fogger. Nice guys.
Georgia of course is known particularly for it’s college music scene of a certain vintage:
REM (sorry grmpy [;)])
The B-52s
Pylon
The Swimming Pool Q’s
Matthew Sweet
plus one of my favorite transplanted bands Man Or Astroman? (originally from Alabama)
I’ve been through a number of states and if I choose my current (California) there’s too many bands to list easily. I grew up in Wisconsin so from there you have:
Killdozer
Bon Iver (from Eau Claire no less, small-ish town where I grew up)
Garbage (except for Shirley Manson)
Electric Hellfire Club
There are others, but none I can think of that y’all might know of.
