Top 10 of 2000's (so far)

[reply]Now don’t get me wrong. I scour at least 10 different forums and at least 20 different news sites every day to check out what I can to keep abreast of things but none of this is remarkable or even thought of in passing in the places I go.

I’m defending myself on all sides here:

So…You ‘scour at least 10 different forums’ and you have NEVER heard of Nurse With Wound or Faust or Scott Walker or Current 93 !!! I’m at a loss to counterattack that revelation. Especially the bit about Neubauten.

It is not something I would brag about. But feel free to.

Um…I’m not sure I really care if you haven’t heard of the bands/artists I mentioned in my list. I’m all the more happy for you. Do you think I come here and talk up the music I like to impress people and make you feel small? Hardly. In fact, I seem to have completely overlooked the point of your post - unless of course it was in jest…in which case I salute you. Two thumbs up.

BTW not liking Sunn O))) is punishable by flogging in some eastern European nations. And don’t even get me started on your Whitehouse ‘diss’.[/reply]

See my reply in previous thread we are “argueing” in. Wow. It’s been a good while since someone got you all worked up over nothing, Pel. I salute you back for still being on your guns though.

Seriously, I have heard of a lot of those bands and listened to several of those albums, but as has been stated, you are much more on the experimental side of music than I am. Not really my thing. I DO like more “mainstream” hardcore/mathcore/“insert genre” without completely jumping on the bandwagon but your list is just a bunch of stuff that strikes me as falling all over itself with redundancy.

Now… to defend myself on the two that I keep getting flogged about. Listen peeps… I liked Tool a lot. Opiate - Aenima are golden in my eyes even to this day but Lateralus just seemed to overstretch it and start heading the way of APC which makes me want to wretch. It’s Tool for teens who think that they are cosmic or some sort and it’s nothing great. The only songs of note on that album are Ticks & Leeches, Disposition, Reflection, and Triad. Beyond that, eh.

And I still stand firm. Sunn O))) just straight out sucks. There isn’t a single thing I’ve ever heard by them that sounds inspired or even humdrum. It’s just plain shite.

Now… I’ve been told to check out Earth recently and THAT is worth a damn from what I’ve heard. Not bad at all.

But the point of my post is that I just wanted to bust on your balls a bit like you used to do to me. I was in a jesting/malicious mood. Thanks for making a shitty day at work a great evening at home, Pel.

I really wanted to stay out of this debate but what the hell…

For me Opiate and Undertow are prime examples of why I hated Tool when I first heard them. They are so ordinary, so generic of their time, so flavour of the month it’s almost as if they were assembled in a factory. Absolutely nothing going for them. And so stale and stiff and dull they may as well been fashioned out of cardboard. A Rollins Band/Pearl Jam/Metallica hybrid that seemed destined for a shelf life of perhaps two years tops. Particularly Opiate - which takes itself sooooo damn seriously and is so fucking lame that if it were an injured pet I’d put it to sleep without blinking.

Aenima is where it started to get interesting. Suddenly, we’re out of cookie cutter, Rollins Band - lite territory and we’re thinking outside of the box. Some of it is even pretty (albeit is a slighty skewed and disturbing fashion). A lyrical depth and introspection that once seemed so damn irksome and so underdeveloped suddenly shines much brighter than any of their contemporaries could possibly boast.

Then Lateralus comes along - and literally slays everything in it’s wake. It’s dark, mysterious and foreboding, beautiful and horrible, strange and complex, simple but progressive. The occult undertones and astrological mysticism hinted at on Aenima comes full circle without ever sounding childish or preachy. Textured and layered, it is a flawless example of ‘metal’ as an artistic statement.

And what a fucking bold statement it was.

Did you talk this over with Peligro before you posted that? Oh man, if not, you are so in trouble!
Late,

My two cents…

Tool does indeed suck as does Sunn-O…or should I say Sunn-O-ZZZzzzzzzZZZZzzzzzzz.

Einsturzende Neubauten, Faust/Nurse With Wound, John Zorn, PJ and Animal Collective are standard. Yeah sure they don’t beat their chest and scream like cookie monster but they still make ace music.[:/]

By the way…my favourite music kicks your favourite musics ass!!! That’s standard too[cool]

A technical aside - The Current 93 Inmost Light Trilogy originally came out in the '90s. The 3-disc version that came out a few years ago was a repackaging.

The Damage Manual - s/t

Yeah good call. Completely forgot about that one. Fantastic album and wow what a line-up.

Seriously, I have heard of a lot of those bands and listened to several of those albums, but as has been stated, you are much more on the experimental side of music than I am. Not really my thing.

‘Experimental’ doesn’t really describe the music though does it? It’s just a loose term which people use when they can’t be arsed to give a proper description. As for that list of Peligros, I’d say that’s not far off what I would have included, minus/plus a few things. I really thought Bjork’s ‘Medula’ allbum was insane. Probably one of my all time favourite albums as was William Basinski’s ‘Disintegration Loops II’. ‘Yankee Hotel Foxtrot’ by Wilco hasn’t been mentioned yet - that was great. Same goes for Lightning Bolt’s ‘Wonderful Rainbow’.

In fact, there’s no way I could keep my list to 50 let alone 10!

I DO like more “mainstream” hardcore/mathcore/“insert genre” without completely jumping on the bandwagon but your list is just a bunch of stuff that strikes me as falling all over itself with redundancy.

Why? I don’t understand why you think his list was redundant. Scott Walker? Jim O’Rourke? Explain.

Disagree. Love Lateralus and 13th Step. Nothing juvenile about that. ‘Tool for teens…’??? And here you are rabbiting on about freakin’ Alexisonfire and HIM???

And I still stand firm. Sunn O))) just straight out sucks. There isn’t a single thing I’ve ever heard by them that sounds inspired or even humdrum. It’s just plain shite.

Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.

Wrong.

This is as lean as I could get it and I’m sure I’ve forgotten something important.

And now to dissect YOUR list…

** Ministry - Animositisomina

Oh grow up.

** Godspeed! You Black Emperor - Lift Your Fists…

Can’t…really comment. I don’t know Godspeed to well. I dunno…maybe one day.

** Jesu - Heartache

OK.

** Norma Jean - Oh God! The Aftermath

Yeah. Hmmm. This is ‘mathcore’ or something isn’t it. As in ‘Dillinger Escape Plan’? I’m probably ten years too old for this. I can’t jump around my room anymore like a youngin’. Unless I’ve just seen Kevin Rudd on television. He’s the only thing thatfills me with adrenalin fuelled rage these days.

** Pelican - City Of Echoes

Decent.

** Deftones - Saturday Night Wrist

Don’t know this band from a hole in the ground. Except that everytime I hear their name I think ‘Linkin Park’. Not prepared to go down this alleyway…

** My Dying Bride - A Line Of Deathless Kings

Hammy. Really hammy. Silly goth metal shite with few redeeming features. And this is less ‘redundant’ than Sunn O))) how…?

** Interpol - Turn On The Bright Lights

There are worse indie rock bands with Joy Division fetishes I suppose. At least you didn’t nominate Placebo. I’ll give you that much.

** Between The Buried And Me - Colours

Who?

** Godflesh - Hymms

There’s been so much interesting and creative music released in the past few years and the best you can do is this…?

Dude, your list is your list. Very pedestrian and little originality. This list could have been made by any number of hack journalists over at Metal Hammer. Doesn’t really stretch out or go out on a limb even remotely (except for maybe the Godspeed bit.)

I can see why you’d be so excited about Soundwave.

I’ll agree somewhat about Undertow - I love the album, but everytime I listen to it I feel that it’s missing something. The singles off it, plus the first song (name escapes me right now) plus Swamp Song are still terrific, but the rest is kinda samey (not a terrible thing).

Opiate on the other hand… eh I guess I can see why you would lump it together with Undertow, but I really feel it’s in a league of it’s own, and while it may just be rawk I dunno… it feels like it has a longer shelf life than it’s follow-up and other players of the time. Maybe it’s just the extra agression.

RE: Coil - I had no idea Musick… came out in the 2000’s… that album (and it’s predecessor) are such wonderful albums… oh I haven’t listened to coil in far too long, I only have 4-5 albums… I remember in the days of Napster I managed to keep my dial up connection on long enough and downloaded QUeens of the Circulating Library at 8kbps for a friend rofl…

Additions to the list from me…
Queens of the Stone Age - Songs for the Deaf/Lullabies to Paralyze
RCHP - By The Way (I wouldnt have said this a few years back but these guys have invaded my brain recently)
Apparently I’ve had brain meltdown as I can’t think of anymore discs I have loved from the 00’s…
I haven’t heard full albums but been diggin stuff I’ve heard on the radio (about 1/2 the albums) from Gossip and Bertie Blackman… best new stuff I’ve heard in a while… nothing groundbreaking to this audience though I’m sure

Someone mention Lightning Bolt - I downloaded some of their stuff years ago (just a few tracks), that stuff was pretty crazy, not bad at all… bit repetative but whatever… had forgotten about those guys.

About time you got around to biting back, heh. Well let’s see… Ministry (despite it all) is still my favorite band sopf course I’m going to throw this in somewhere, and at least I picked the last Barker/Jourgenson LP rather than RGB or the rehashed Rantology. You really didn’t knock me around much on mosty of it, but yes. Norma Jean is “mathcore” but this album in particular is very inspired by Botch’s '97 album “We Are The Romans” which anyone who knows good 'core will have to say is one of the best of all time. It’s good stuff. You should check it out, really. You may find it’s worth your time. Don’t bother with the laster albums. And BTBAM - Colours goes along the same veins but they throw in a lot of epic stuff and switch up’s that are quite brilliant (imagine a good “hardcore” breakdown followed up with a romanian gypsy folk interlude that will have you scratching your head then segued into something else completely). I’ll give you that the MDB is far from their best but they haven’t released a lot of great tracks since Turn Loose the Swans or Angel and The Dark River… And I love my goth/doom.

So yeah. I would be excited about Soundwave cuz I am a bit on the easy to please side of things. I just don’t get all the crazy weird shit you listen to when the tried and proven theories still work just fine when done right.

[reply]** My Dying Bride - A Line Of Deathless Kings

Because they change notes every now and then.

(Planning on seeing Sunn O))) next month)

are those all solid state records pro-christian hardcore bands?

I listened to Sunn O)))'s White1 album the other day for the first time. Kinda interesting, and wasn’t exactly expecting the drone sound, and more so the very down-tuned instrumental noise metal that someone told me about. Not bad though.

are those all solid state records pro-christian hardcore bands?

Solid State does tend to have only Pro-Christian bands, but don’t let it turn you down. Some of that stuff you would barely recognize as being Christian in any form. Bands that come to mind in this category :

Norma Jean/Luti-Kriss (their old moniker)
Zao
Mortal Treason

I’ll also throw in the Grace Jones album “Hurricane” seeing as Sly & Robbie, Brian Eno, Tricky and Banksy all had a hand in making it kick-ass.

Why the fucking hell is this album not available in the US? I’ve been blipping tracks off it and it sounds great - want it now! [pirate][pirate][pirate]
