To Have & To Hold is a new documentary from Jony Lyle that celebrates and explores the phenomenon of collecting Vinyl. The documetary includes interviews with well known collectors like Bobbito Garcia, ?uestlove, Chuck D, Andre Torres (From Wax Poetics), Amir (of Kon & Amir) and Bruce Ludvall, the owner of Bluenote. Based on the trailer the film seems to be heavily focused on collectors in or around New York.
You can learn more about the film at the official Facebook page. Also there’s an interview with the director over at Mat Dolphin’s blog.
I’d love to hear from other record collectors out there. What are some of your favorite pieces of vinyl in your collection?
My dad has a hell of a vinyl collection. I can’t remember most of it but I do know there’s every Led Zeppelin album, every Black Sabbath album except for Master Of Reality(including some of the Dio stuff), and a bunch of Rolling Stones. Lot’s of old blues in there too. I gotta go thru the collection soon bc he’s getting rid of some of the records. There’s some bad ones in there.
As far as some favorites go:
Metallica- Kill em All
Ozzy- Tribute
Led Zeppelin- Houses Of The Holy
Black Sabbath- Sabotage (wish it wasn’t a reissue)
Black Sabbath- The Mob Rules
Ministry- All Day/Every Day Is Halloween
Ministry- The Fall
Albert King- Let’s Have A Natural Ball
Issac Hayes- Hot Buttered Soul
Def Lepppard- Pyromania
Cat Stevens- Tea For The Tillerman (and any other albums my dad owns by him)
The Mentors- You Axed For It
Judas Priest- Screaming For Vengeance
Frank Zappa- Tinsel Town Rebellion
Van Halen- 1 and 2
That’s all I can remember but I know there were a lot more. The Ministry singles were ones I bought
I’m embarrassed to admit how much money I spend on vinyl - it’s THAT much.
Probably have around 150 vinyl albums. Most I have ever spent on one item was around $300 for Sunn O)))'s White Box.
I know Olsen and Amlux here are both collectors and have vinyl collections that would make mine seem embarrassing…but I’m getting there. Barely a month goes past when I don’t have at least one massive splurge on vinyl.
And by ‘splurge’ I mean $300 +
Just out of curiosity - what is the biggest vinyl collection anyone here has ever seen in person? Anyone here know any hardcore collectors??
Thurston Moore is a vinyl fiend. There are some record labels that he buys every single release of. I know Fenriz from Darkthrone is a big record collector also. He has previously said that it is not uncommon for metal heads in Norway to have collections of well over 2000 vinyls.
I have heard that Elijah Wood from LOTR is a self confessed vinyl geek with a collection of well in excess of 5000 records.
Supposedly Mike Watt is a big time collector also.
I probably have around 250 LPs ranging from post-punk, Wax Trax/Nettwerk related stuff to the heavy metal records I had as a kid.
As far as rare things go probably the original Skinny Puppy Last Rights full color german edition, or the aDuck/Philth split 12" are the rarest of my collection.
One of my favorites LP’s though is the gatefold Suspiria soundtrack by Goblin. I also like the Work For Love cover with Al better than the original With Sympathy.
I remember the late Lux Interior of The Cramps had a massive collection of 45s that I saw on a program once. Jello Biafra also has a large record collection he talks about in one of the RE/SEARCH books.
I’ve got a bunch of vinyl. No idea how many records it is, as I’ve never counted. Really just whatever I thought was cool or not available on cd. Most I ever spent (by far) was $400, but that was for one of only 2 copies of a 12" that are known to exist. Even though there are more than likely 5 total copies or so, it was still well worth it.

What vinyl was it? Don’t leave us mystified!

I used to have a pretty big vinyl collection (700-1000 records) including a pretty exhaustive collection of early industrial. Now I have no vinyl, it got to be such a pain to move that I’ve gone to largely MP3 now. I live in one room now and don’t like to own much that takes up space.
At last count I think I have about 880 - 890 12", about 75 10" and probably 300 7" records. And about 1700 cds.
I have a lot of first press early black metal (Burzum, Mayhem, Emperor and more obscure stuff) that’s worth a squid. Sold a pristine first edition vinyl copy of Posessed’s ‘Seven Churches’ a while back for $500 to some guy who was buying it as a gift for his brother who was just coming off a 10 year stint in prison!
I’d say at least 60% of my vinyl collection could be considered a ‘rarity’. I’ve never had the collection valued but I should. Hell, my copy of Nirvana’s ‘Love Buzz’ is worth $3000 alone. Then there’s my autographed copy of The Cure’s ‘A Forest’ 7" and um…gee what else…
I am seriously envious of everyone who has posted in this thread [shocked]
my piddly 40 record collection isn’t even worth an honorable mention [:(]

Mayhem - Deathcrush (first pressing with Euronymous’s name scrawled on the back in pen…as the printer had left it off)
Bathory - Bathory
Bathory - The Return
Bathory - Under The Sign…
…all first pressings
And just…heaps of early 90s black metal first pressings (Marduk, Immortal, Emperor, Von, Aura Noir, Gorgoroth etc)[/reply]
YOU MEAN TO TELL ME YOU ACTUALLY HAVE THE ORIGINAL POSERCORPSE DEATHCRUSH WITH THE PINK COVER?! How much did you pay for that one? And specify the rest of the 90’s BM. Let me guess on some of em
Immortal- Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism
Emnperor- In The Nightside Eclipse
Darkthrone- A Blaze In The Northern Sky
Marduk- Dark Endless
Dissection- The Somberlain
Enslaved- Vikingliger Veldi
Satyricon- Dark Medeval Times
I’m gonna even take a wilder guess that all those are first pressings too. Sorry I’m just heavily impressed that you have the orginial Deathcrush. I’d kill to have that one. I hope it’s still in good condition

Yes.

I bought it back in '96 off the guy who used to own Metal For Melbourne. He knew the band personally. Or so he told me.
Sold it to me for $150. Needless to say it’s worth 10 times that now.
Let me guess on some of em
Fire away.
Immortal- Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism
Emnperor- In The Nightside Eclipse
Darkthrone- A Blaze In The Northern Sky
I have these. And Frost by Enslaved. I have a really cool Italian press Emperor bootleg from '97 too. Wicked artwork and one of the best looking pic disks I have ever seen.

It’s in excellent condition. I have Venom’s ‘Black Metal’ first press with a signed insert and newsletter too if that interests you.
