This whole thing is fascinating, I’m looking forward to seeing what comes next. Really hope nothing untoward becomes of Julian Assange.

The neocons are all pissed about it cause what’s being released is mostly stuff that was done on Bush’s watch. That aside I don’t see how he’s not being arrested, let alone executed for, treason. Since treason is only allowed for former sitting presidents.

I’ve only skimmed through a few of the news clippings, but do we know WHO leaked the stuff, or who’s mistake caused the stuff to become accessible to whomever turned it over to Wikileaks?
Because those are the guys whose balls we should be nailing to a train track, not some ham and egger running a website.
The government hates when this stuff happens because it shows what a bunch of inept retards they are.

by your post, i’m assuming you’re against wikileaks? why?
imo, there should be more people like him, and more websites like wikileaks.

I think you misunderstood Gunnar’s post dude…I don’t think Gunnar has anything against wikileaks nor the dude running the site. He seems to suggest that whoever leaked the info to them should be punished…

Yes, Akbar read it correctly (and I’m not sure how it could have been read otherwise). If stuff is “Top Secret” or “Classified” then there are a number of people whose job it is to maintain the secrecy of such material. And anyone who is made privy to such information also has a responsibility to handle materials appropriately and to not share what they are not allowed to share.
Was our system hacked? If so, we need a new head of Information Security, because they obviously weren’t very secure. And that previous person should be looked at with scrutiny.
Did someone on the inside download these docs and then release them to the public? If so, that person is a piece of crap and should probably never see the light of day again.
I just want to know how the information got out to begin with, because I’m more concerned about THAT than whatever documents have already been compromised.
I have no beef with Mr. Wikileaks. I never even heard of the guy or his site before. These kind of guys are sometimes weasely, but I respect what they do and feel that they actually keep our leaders and governments accountable.

The leaks go all the way up until this year, so if it pertains more to the Bush years, that is only because Bush was president for longer than Obama has been.
I don’t think they could get Assange for treason, considering he is not an American citizen. Though I’m sure there’s a litany of charges being drawn up against him right now, and whichever Americans were responsible for the leaks will probably have committed treason.
The Australian government have refused to protect him and are looking into what they themselves can charge him with. But its no secret that our government are a bunch of sniveling spineless suck-ups when it comes to the US gov.

no, i understood. i just thought it was rational to assume that he was against wikileaks since he was bad mouthing the person who leaked the information…
personally, i think we need more whistle blowers.
i just thought it was rational to assume that he was against wikileaks since he was bad mouthing the person who leaked the information…
How is that rational to assume?
One is an Australian publishes crap that comes to him from supposed anonymous sources. The other is someone working for the US Government who has been granted access to highly classified reports and documents and has BETRAYED the trust of his/her country and STOLE information to release to the world thereby possibly even compromising our safety and security.
I don’t necessarily like what the Wikileaks guy did in this particular case, but I don’t particularly disagree with his right to do so. And as I noted before, I think that the existence of such information channels keeps people accountable and on their toes (i.e. the US Gov’t will need to be even MORE careful about what a-holes we hire and we’ll have to spend millions more searching their buttholes for flash drives every night they leave the office).
personally, i think we need more whistle blowers.
Assuming the “whistleblowers” you refer to are like the guy who leaked the information in this case . . . that’s retarded. You might think that these guys are championing your freedoms or something, but I assure you this just makes our own government more distrustful of everyone and will, in the future, make it even harder to do things that we take for granted (fly on airplanes, surf the internet, talk on the phone).
If someone can’t handle the difficult job of shutting the heck up and NOT stealing information . . . then they should get a different job.

Actually his “crap” is legit. and his sources are military whistleblowers.
from wikipedia (I know I know not the greatest of sources but still more reliable than fox news)

Wikileaks releases classified 2007 video showing killing of civilians by U.S. helicopter in Iraq
Early in 2010, the internet leak site Wikileaks made a public request for assistance in decrypting a video it described as “US bomb strikes on civilians”, specifically requesting access to supercomputer time. The site stated on its Twitter account on January 8, 2010, that it had a copy of video footage of the incidents, and announced that it would release it by March 21.The footage was released during an April 5 press conference at the National Press Club, and subsequently under a designated website titled “Collateral Murder”. Wikileaks stated that the footage shows the “murder of Iraqi civilians and two Reuters journalists”. Wikileaks identified the leak’s source as “a number of military whistleblowers”. Speaking to Reuters on condition of anonymity, a U.S. Defense official confirmed the authenticity of the leaked audio and video. The military reported that it could not find its copy of the video.
Wikileaks released a 39-minute version, which shows all three incidents, and a 17 minute version, which shows only the first two attacks. Highlighted in the 17 minute version of the video are Noor-Eldeen with a camera and Chmagh talking on his mobile phone. Both videos depict the attack on the van, van driver, and two other men, and the aftermath when the two seriously injured children were evacuated by US ground forces who arrived on the scene. The longer video shows the third attack, in which Hellfire missiles were fired into a building
btw… i thought that this little nugget from Fox news about the bombing was precious
Fox News criticized Wikileaks’s edit of the video, stating “the problem, according to many who have viewed the video, is that WikiLeaks appears to have done selective editing”
the fact that Faux news would criticize/accuse anyone for fishy editing is hysterical to me… que the sean hannity hack job of obama saying taxes will go up under his plan. que the video andrew breitbart made that got that agriculture chick fired for just the recent ones.
anyway on to the leak guys…
I really like Assange and think he’s using the net responsibly. As a tax paying citizens i want to know EVERYTHING!! and it’s fucking bullshit that I have to hear it from a foreign citizen. The press has dropped the ball on this and has been dropping the ball if you need any more proof of the media monopoly then nothing will convince you.
We will never get any type of real news anymore. “Deepthroat” type stories will never happen again. Even Woodward and Bernstein have become completely bought.
I also completely agree with Assange’s assessment.
Assange says that Wikileaks has released more classified documents than the rest of the world press combined: “That’s not something I say as a way of saying how successful we are – rather, that shows you the parlous state of the rest of the media. How is it that a team of five people has managed to release to the public more suppressed information, at that level, than the rest of the world press combined? It’s disgraceful.”
disgraceful. absolutely.
I’m an adult I can handle the truth. I don’t need to be lied to , to be coddled, massaged, stroked, or handled, tell me the truth. and fuck them for treating me like a child. Anyone who wants to play blindman can go ahead and stick their head in the ground (they probably don’t keep up on the “news” anyway.) so for the rest of us give us the truth, at the very least my taxes pay for the truth, so they can send me an email… “this is what was reported, this is what actually happened”… this wasn’t reported but we thought you might want to know…" I’d read an email like that.
The other is someone working for the US Government who has been granted access to highly classified reports and documents and has BETRAYED the trust of his/her country and STOLE information to release to the world thereby possibly even compromising our safety and security.
Who is the U.S.? The US is it’s citizens… since this guy is a citizen the finger pointing goes as follows:
This guy stole information from himself, to show himself what he is not telling himself…
I don’t necessarily like what the Wikileaks guy did in this particular case, but I don’t particularly disagree with his right to do so.
So the whole “piece of crap… light of day…”?
And as I noted before, I think that the existence of such information channels keeps people accountable and on their toes (i.e. the US Gov’t will need to be even MORE careful about what a-holes we hire and we’ll have to spend millions more searching their buttholes for flash drives every night they leave the office).
how 'bout the U.S. populace just vote in more honest politicians so that info need not be classified or as Cheney would stamp it “treat as classified”
personally, i think we need more whistle blowers.
Assuming the “whistleblowers” you refer to are like the guy who leaked the information in this case . . . that’s retarded.

what, exactly, have they leaked that you think puts our country at risk? a more accurate death toll? proof of murder…
You might think that these guys are championing your freedoms or something,
are suggesting that ignorance is freedom?
but I assure you this just makes our own government more distrustful of everyone and will, in the future, make it even harder to do things that we take for granted (fly on airplanes, surf the internet, talk on the phone).
So, basically, if you don’t tell on the rapist he won’t come back to kill you?? rather go down fightin’, myself
If someone can’t handle the difficult job of shutting the heck up and NOT stealing information . . . then they should get a different job.[/reply]
If someone can’t handle accountability perhaps they shouldn’t run for office or decline any promotion in the military they are offered… cuts both ways …right now you seem to be on the side of the wife batterer “you made me beat you, you fucking bitch!!” by your logic, she needs another beating for calling the cops.
who is worse? the guy that ordered the air strike and killed those people and then tried to cover it up or the person the that told us about it?? please there’s no answer required.
What’s the latest shit they released? Hilary said some shit about Jerusalem?? so fucking what? That woman talks out of both sides of her face anyway, most people that deal with her know that. So, now there is “proof?” woopty doo.

THought that I saw that the most recent stuff was about Hilary and not necessarily while she was under Obama. I’m all for the Obama secrets as well! print it all out!! let’s get the Kennedy Files!! Let’s get MLK files. let’s have it all!
I don’t think they could get Assange for treason, considering he is not an American citizen.
Good point. So, that means he’s just in the run of the mill terrorist category now. BUT that makes him an enemy combatant and a free-dumb hater and probably a commie too now that senator McCarthy has been re-branded under the tea partiers as an American hero rather than the drunk power hungry bigot that he was.
i hadn’t heard anything about his nationality until just recently… Thought he was an American, a PFC in the intelligence dept. that was being bounced for DADT or something like that. That’s the most I had really seen on him until recently and apparently I’m getting him mixed up with someone else.
edit: Bradley Manning, but i can’t find anything about the dadt charge… you could make the argument that this guy is a patriot for exposing illegal operations… I’m pretty sure it’s in the military code of conduct that you are to disobey a direct order by a superior if it’s illegal. it seems this guy didn’t have that avenue.
Though I’m sure there’s a litany of charges being drawn up against him right now, and whichever Americans were responsible for the leaks will probably have committed treason.
For sure. Don’t know about the Americans but I have read that Assange is living out of his suitcase and in airports at this point… Shitty life! I wanna know why he’s getting all the press when, really, it’s him and 8 others on the wiki board of directors.
The Australian government have refused to protect him and are looking into what they themselves can charge him with. But its no secret that our government are a bunch of sniveling spineless suck-ups when it comes to the US gov.
No kidding!! talk about licking ass! apparently if you are not U.S.Friendly WE WILL KICK YOUR ASS! I don’t blame Your Government for being scared

I travel all around the world and I can tell you with 100% seriousness that the best news source on the planet is AL JAZEERA. I’m dead serious.
I’m blown away at the amount of actual information I get when I’m on travel that I never get in the US. It’s like the world I know gets flipped on its ass.

I have a documentary on that station. (It’s called Control Room) Apparently Rupert was looking to purchase it a while back.

Yeah it is a great news station. I’m pretty lucky as I get it on one of my free channels and do try and watch every now and again when I watch news.
^
I looked into getting it here once and it would have been a nightmare. I’d have to get some mega 8 foot satellite dish that ET’s mom uses to call her family installed and then pay like $300 a month or something.
Murdoch was going to buy Al Jazeera? Was he looking to acquire the whole company or he just wanted US distribution rights? I shudder to think . . .
that wikileaks guy will wind up in a dumpster real soon.
other countries are becoming compromised by these leaks. So its not just the US who is pissed about this. his days are numbered.
