The Walking Dead

Are there any fans of The Walking Dead series here? I quite liked the first season last year and have been brushing up on the first few of this season. I’m fairly impressed with season 2 so far; the Shane and Darrell characters are getting better and the acting has been pretty top notch.

There’s been some class disposal of zombies; the one in the well was brilliant. Glad to see Michael Rooker throw an appearance in it again and I hope they have more use for him. I think the main guy, Rick, is not the strongest element (I just can’t look at the actor, Andrew Lincoln, and not see him as ‘Egg’ from This Life back in the 90s)

The Georgia setting adds a great deal to the story. I wonder are they actually filming it in and around Atlanta or elsewhere? Any Atlantans here know?

Yes, it’s filmed in Atlanta. I’ve been tempted to head down there for the zombie casting calls, but the chances just aren’t worth the drive.

If you like the show, you should try the comic. It’s just as good, but goes in several completely different directions, so it won’t spoil anything. It’s a bit more grim than the show as well. Pretty much everyone dies.

I actually sent my headshot to the casting director.
I never heard back.
:frowning:

i donno, i am really let down by the show. whereas the comic is brilliant and has a lot of strong elements, the show seems to be much more visual, while the characters are a lot more flat and less endearing.

that being said, it is still entertaining, its just not as strong as the comic.

I’m not a comics person so I can’t compare it to it’s original format, but as is often the case with medium-crossing adaptations, I wouldn’t be surprised if the series pisses off fans of the comic. That must mean the comics are awesome in this case.

Yes, the comics are much better, but the show isn’t bad. I liked the first season better though. I hated how they spent a whole 2 shows on the damn kid getting shot. They tried to make it dramatic and it just ended up being boring.

The best show on AMC though, is Breaking Bad. One of the best shows in the history of television, IMO, maybe just below The Wire.

I didn’t like it and found it to be a real chore to get through. I find that I just don’t like zombie films let alone series.

I LOVE vampire movies like Near Dark, Fright Night (original) and the Christopher Lee Dracula Hammer films…and I LOVE True Blood…but zombies bore the hell out of me?

I watched Stake Land after reading great things about it…but the vampires were like zombies and the film made me feel like i was sitting through a two hour episode of Walking Dead.

read and am a current buyer of the comics: love them, amazing. the show…ehh…i think this is one of those extreme cases of knowing the source material being a bad thing. but i still watch it because how many of zombacolypse shows are there on tv, amirite?

near dark is motherfucking BRILLIANT. i love that movie…

Big fan of zombie everything but never saw it, I am also NOT a fan of vampire ANYTHING but I too love Near Dark (and Let The Right One In)…go figure

+1 for Near Dark and the original Fright Night! The 80’s had a lot of horror cheese but a lot of greats too!

Rock on!

I love The Walking Dead. I’ve watched every season. Have any of you read the comic?

I gave up on the comic while they were still in the prison. It was going nowhere fast and the writing was sometimes eye-rollingly bad.

Never read the comics. I dig the show though. It can be full of drama alot…but then the madness begins and it’s all good. [tongue]

The comic is really great, nobody is off limits from getting killed or maimed. Not sure why you gave up at the prison, rev. the prison was a brief stop in the comics. they didn’t stay nearly as long as they did in the show.

The current bad ass in the comics is a bastard named negan. Oh my god is the guy ruthless. I think they are going to be hard pressed to find someone to play this part on the show or even portray him accurately. The guy is rated R by himself. they’re going to have to scale him back in order to make him cable tv acceptable, which is going to be a damn shame.
But even still I like the show and comic equally but by far the comic is much much darker. but the show has much more likable characters.
Zombies are an after thought with the walking dead. It has more to do with humans trying to survive in the midst of danger, they just chose zombies as a way to frame it.

I dropped the title in the prison storyline too. It just wasn’t engaging me. Never really clicked with that guys writing.

Maybe I’m more of either a huge ideas or superhero guy in what I dig in comics.

haha its funny to see that odl comment of mine where i say that the comics were stronger, because i have been QUITE turned off from the comics for a while (issue 100 was so utterly disappointing and empty that i just stopped caring completely) whereas the second half of season three of the show was REALLY well done, and i have actually be fawning over how good season four has been.

its funny show to running mediums can switch genius like that. haha.

Seriously? How do you get bored with negan running around?
man, I don’t get it. I really like the comic and I’m kinda pissed they always leave off on a cliff hanger. I’m digging all out war right now cause it’s every other week. So for the most part I run to the comic shop when it’s the day.
Oh well to each their own

Negan is just too… flat for me. i donno, its hard to say. maybe i got burned out on the 99 issues before number 100, but 100 in particular just felt empty and loveless, and then the little bits i read afterward were even more… dry.

[there be spoilers!]

i think killing Glenn that way and at that time was nothing other than a cheap and dishonest attention grabber. someone had to die in issue 100, and it had to be someone that mattered. that tied in with the HUGE amount of misogynistic elements to Negan’s introduction and character just struck me as uninspired. also, well before issue 100, the writing for Carl was starting to bother me. in the comics since the run in with the cannibals i felt the writing getting a little less invested in some of the side characters, to the point that a lot of them have become quite cardboard.

i havent been keeping up with the All Out War block, but im ok with that. Negan is just not at all appealing to me as a villain, and i fear that big choices were made too early in the series that are being regretted now, and the writing is suffering.

that said, the show on the other hand has REALLY stepped up. the Gov in this last season became a nuanced and many-feathered animal, pulling out a lot of interesting moments and characteristics that gave me a whole lot of ideas and questions about him.
