style and method

For all guitar fans , would Mikey

of Ministry be in your favorite top

10 as a great guitarest.

not for me. it’s very hard for me to claim a favorite guitar player. I like different guitarists for different reasons. Here’s a few of my favs…

  • david gilmour
  • john fruscantie
  • jimi hendrix
  • angus young
  • michael hedges

slack with you on that one.

dave navarro
ted nugent
chris holmes
edide van halen
Beck

I like what Mike contributed to the Mind tour and Psalm 69. There’s no doubt he was a great guitarist, but I would not be able to identify his style by just listening to his guitar playing. Then again, I’ve never listened to Rigor Mortis or anything else he’s done.

My personal favorites, a few of them are not the fastest, but definitely have their own signature sound and style:

Frank Zappa (Dweezil is just as good these days)
Alex Lifeson (Rush)
Lindsey Buckingham
Eddie Van Halen
Jamie West-Oram (The Fixx)
Reg Smithies (The Chameleons)
Johnny Marr (The Smiths)
David Gilmour
Neal Schon
Charlie Burchill (Simple Minds)

1002

Frank Zappa
Sonny Sharrock
Eddie “Maggot Brain” Hazel
Buckethead
Steven Wilson
JK Broadrick
Vernon Reid
Tony Iommi
Randy Rhoads
Robert Fripp
Norman Westburg
J Mascis
Greg Dulli
Spacey T Singleton

just to name a very few off the top of my head

Real underrated one as well - Neil Young. I think you gotta listen to a lot of his stuff to listen for it, though. He’s got a certain “crunch” to his style

forgot throw in John 5 aka john lowery

love his shit

if you haven’t seen it watch john 5 the devil knows my name

bad ass dvd

If i was to do a list of players who have influenced me, I’d say, in no particular order:

Slash/Izzy Stradlin
Tony Iommi
Neil Young
J Mascis
James Hetfield
Kerry King/Jeff Hanneman
Dimebag Darrell
Tommy Victor (sorry Gunnar [;)] )
John Christ
Brent Hinds/Bill Kelliher

I say no particular order, Slash is definitely #1 with Tony Iommi a close 2nd. I never actually learned to play the guitar in a normal way, i started on an electric that was missing half the bridge and i only used one string, i found it so hard to transpose what i knew on one string to the others. I’d been messing about for a couple of years before i even bothered trying to learn chords, i did it all the wrong way round. I still don’t even know the names of many chords, i only know a couple of scales (and don’t know their names either) but i can play just fine, i record my own music and i have, i think anyway, my own style.

I sometimes wish i had learned it properly and wonder what i’d be like if i had, but maybe it might not be as enjoyable for me if i had. I prefer it messy and i hate technical playing, so i think it worked out ok for me.

Mike Scaccia is definitely on my top 10 all-time favorite guitar players list. Granted, I’m from Arlington, TX - so when I first started playing Rigor Mortis was required listening. I suppose I’ll put Dimebag in my top 10 as well…just cause I’m a homer.

It’s interesting to me that 2 of the greatest metal guitar players of the last 20-30 years were both from Arlington, TX and both died on stage. Weird and tragic.

I think Mikey’s unique style is best heard on the Rigor Mortis releases. Check out their debut, or the “new” one “Slaves to the Grave.”

Some of the “guitar players” listed…just…what? I’m not gonna start an argument because, hey I love Greg Dulli (Afghan Whigs), but I’ve always considered him a songwriter, not really an axe man.

Beck on the other hand, I just don’t get. And as a quick aside, I did like Al’s story from “Lost Gospels” where he apparently had no idea who Beck was, but was a big fan of Beck’s dads stuff.

But, hey one mans Jimmy Page is another mans guy from Coldplay.

Anyone mention Blixa Bargeld?

one great guitar player i didn’t mention should of been in my top five by far is Ron Asheton from the stooges.
