Beck on the other hand, I just don’t get. And as a quick aside, I did like Al’s story from “Lost Gospels” where he apparently had no idea who Beck was, but was a big fan of Beck’s dads stuff.
WHAT??? How did I miss this? We’d been trying to solve the mystery of the Beck story(ies). So there is actually something in Al’s autobiography?
Queer, could you give me a quick rundown of who these cats are (what bands, if any, they are from)?
Norman Westerberg (is that the right spelling? Don’t even know anymore) is probably the longest tenured guitarist for Swans. Has a very concentrated style that sounds much “easier” than it really is.
Sonny Sharrock - one of the most innovative guitarists within modern ‘jazz,’ although his best work goes way beyond that label and really can’t be categorized. His LP “Black Woman” is maybe one of my favorite records in terms of emotional range and just elements that I didn’t expect.
Strangely the most ‘popular’ thing Sonny did was to play on the theme music for the ‘Space Ghost: Coast to Coast’ TV series.
I do not really know about the other two fellas. I’ll probably be embarrassed when I find out what other people they’ve played with, which will jog my admittedly bad memory.
Geordie Walker
Skip “Little Axe” McDonald
Robert Fripp
Fripp’s solo on Brian Eno’s Baby’s On Fire is the most savage & deadliest I’ve ever heard. My brother thrashed that album when I was a young child…and to this day it still sounds as fresh and out there as it did then.
Geordie Walker is simply the coolest guitar player on the planet. The sound he gets is insane.

Yeah, good rundown here…Sharrock was an unhinged genius on the guitar…incredibly visceral guitar player…his solo album Ask the Ages produced by Bill Laswell is indeed on for the ages…with the mighty Elvin Jones on drums…he was also in “supergroup” Last Exit…not for the faint of heart…
Steven Wilson is a musician who plays in several bands but now focuses mainly on solo work…He is the leader of Porcupine Tree,Blackfield,No-Man,Bass Communion and several others…he also produces other bands and gets commissioned on a regular basis to remix/remaster old classic prog albums for well known bands…he is considered a leading expert in 5.1 remastering…
Spacey T Singleton is a journey man guitarist who has done a good deal of session work…he has played with the George Clinton/Parliament-Funkadelic set and did a stint in Fishbone…overlooked and underrated player…

He really is fantastic, his tone is instantly recognisable and fucking enormous. He’s definitely one of a kind, there is no other player with a comparable sound and style.
I also love how Adam Jones uses the guitar in abstract ways on Tool’s albums.
But yes, Mikey is awesome. Relapse has some of my favorite guitar riffs in Ministry’s catalog.
I got an Epiphone Les Paul silverburst recently, the reviews were raving about Adam Jones and his playing, but i must admit i got it because i love Mastodon and they plays a lot of silverburst axes [:)]
Relapse has some phenomenal playing. Do you play guitar yourself?

I can play keyboards fairly well. I plan on learning the guitar someday.

No, this remains unsolved. I have looked around here and there, but haven’t found “my source.” I think we had this going on another thread.
Still can’t find the article where he mentions the Beck story, but this one really cracked me up. The mention of the narcotics officers/ cops is just too classic. Reminds me of the “Joe Sly” story with the online cop busting the punk shows.
