Listening to the new Flaming Lips I can definately hear a “space rock” (for lack of a better term) influence in some of the tracks, a genre I’ve had an off-again, on-again love affair with for the past decade or so, mostly losing interest when I run out of material. Some of my favorite in this genre:
Pink Floyd - (Of course) select albums
Tear Garden - Last Man to Fly (Gotta be in my top 10)
Psychic TV - Trip Reset (very underrated!)
Pink Dots - undeniable “space rock” feel and influence
Bowie (not my fav all around but has his moments)
Anything I’m missing out on here? Surely there is more quality music in this genre out there.
What is Space Rock exactly? I listen to Failure (amazing fucking band, btw), and i’ve seen people refer to them in that genre. Pink Dots and Tear Garden are priceless btw. Ka-Spiel has a certain character about him.
Space Rock seems to be one of those loosely defined genres that is somewhat harder to pinpoint, as many bands have songs or even albums that fall in the genre but aren’t exclusively “space rock” bands. I’d say the music is characterized as slow tempo psychedelic rock with steady, throbbing baselines, synthesizer rythyms and effects featured prominently, and features guitar parts that accentuate the song rather than provide a constant rythym in the form of chords… that is the best I can describe it, Think Floyd and Last Man to Fly, Pink Dots Maria Dimension etc…
As in “rock, rock, planet rock!” Afrika Bambatta? Good stuff.
How could I forget Hawkwind… duh!
I was expecting Peligro might pull some obscure space rock act out to suggest, but I guess his suggestion of Acid Mothers Temple to me a while back might fall under that category.
MAD PROPS TO DA BRUDDA TOOT 4 DA 411 ON DA ACEYALONE,
DA WAS DA SHIZZLE FO SHIZNIT LO PRETZEL MA DIGZIT!
It’s become one of my new favourite albums, thanks to you [:)]
Good one!
A Book Of Human Language is on a level all of it’s own. It’s lush and pure beauty.
Now my friend it is your mission to get these to complete your selection of Toot’s top 5 albums…
Sly & Robbie Stripped To The Bone By Howie B
Edan “Beauty & The Beat”
Amon Tobin “Foley Room” (Get all the rest of his while you’re at it as he’s the greatest producer on the planet)
Scientist Meets The Space Invaders
I didn’t list Godflesh’s “Songs Of Love & Hate” Monks “Black Monk Time” as I presumed you already had these.
As for Aceyalone get the following in this order…
Love & Hate
All Balls Don’t Bounce
Acceopted Eclectic
Magnificent City
Acey has been doing genre concept albums over the last few years. His first “Lightning Strikes” (Dance Hall/Reggae) was a bit hit and miss although it does feature the song “Shango” which is the most slammin song out there! His most recent “Aceyalone & The Loney Ones” is his Be Bop Doo Wop concept album and it’s fucking great! It’s a live band backing him and they really to get the party rockin. He’s also said he’d like to make an Afro/Cuban album and a Jazz album.
Also check out the first two Freestyle Fellowship albums “To Whom It May Concern” and “Inner City Griots”. This was Aceyalone’s group before he went solo and the above albums are killer.
Word up and a yo yo wit da yo-yoz ma honky!!!
“You see I rhyme good…but I write better…I used to rock a leather jacket and a white sweater!”[cool]
It’s all music. And the thread was not just for one band…it was for Space Rock which for me would be “futuristic” type music…i.e Spank Rock?
Now stop crying and bow down to the Monks![/reply]
He was bitchin’ in another thread that we don’t discuss music anymore! Now here’s a thread about music and he’s still bitchin’! you never can please some people [:/]
Late,
