Just found a leak today, put it on the ipod and gave it a spin while I took the doggy for a walk.
So far I like it pretty well, several above average tracks, a few mediocre tracks, and only one that made me use the skip button. Already I like this one 100x better than mythmaker, hell I might even pay for this release. Wish I had time to write a review, but I’m sure you guys can find it using the google or filestube or whatever.
It’s a very trippy album also. Listening to it actually makes me think “man, what if dwayne was on this…”. That probably would’ve boosted my opinion a few points more. Pretty obvious that cEvin and Walk lacked good chemistry. So to see a good album come out with very minimal Walk influence is a breath of fresh air just a reminder that the puppy I knew before is intact still around.
It’s strange to me that you like the nu Skinny Puppy…
I would have figured you for a “nothing after ‘Last Rights’” guy.
Anywho I am giving it a whirl now…
EDIT - also I should mention that I listened to a recent interview with Ogre where he says cEvin kEy did most of the album, except for 3 tracks that Mark Walk was involved in and the one you’ve linked “Cullorblind” was one of them. I am excited about that because I think Walk had too much a hand in the new Puppy and it was too one sided, dominated by the OhGr team and sounded more like an extension of that project. A lot of people have said that/
On a side note, it is annoying to me how they use the stupid spellings for the song titles in nu Puppy…
Yes “Collurblind” is clearly a Mark Walk track and is inferior because typical of the Ohgr style it’s too straightforward and cheesy for a Puppy album.
“Ovirt” is much better and actually sounds like a real Skinny Puppy song thank the Lord!
I think the contrast between these two songs confirms that the biggest failing of the Skinny Puppy reunion so far was that kEy was not given enough control over the music.
‘Last Rights’ is brilliant but really claustrophobic. It’s a grower. Kind of their ‘Filth Pig’ IMO. I mean in terms of the dense, misery, oppressive feeling that doesn’t let up.
I’m not going to listen to the rest of the leaks, just the two I heard on YouTube and commented on. I’ll wait til it comes out and gasp actually buy the fucking thing, like you all should be doing.
I’m buying it. Just didn’t feel like waiting to hear it. To this day, I own ALL of the puppy albums (excluding the back and forth stuff except doomsday). Hopefully a lot of people buy it. Not sure how others think of the past two albums, but this is a HUGE step up and hopefully it sells well enough to get recognized as that.
