Skinny Puppy - Handover

Really tempted to download this but I won’t.

Only two weeks to go before it comes out anyway. Definitely looking forward to this. The samples up on amazon sound great. I’ve been listening to a lot of Download and cEvin Key recently so I’m in a Skinny Puppy frame of mind.

And I definitely agree with the Last Rights / Filth Pig comparisons. Very claustrophobic and dark. Went for a drive late last night, along the beach road and through the neighbouring streets. 2am, everybody in bed and me driving around listening to Last Rights - that’s the way this album was meant to be experienced.

Highly recommended.

awesome, i’m sold. when’s the tour then?

lol. exactly.

The tour for this album was two years ago.

The tour for this album was two years ago.

And next month I think. Since I’ve gotten this I have yet to put it down and really listen to anything else. Fucking loving this album.

haha well played.

+1

Really digging what I’ve heard so far, best thing Ogre’s done since Devil’s in my Details. Leaps n bounds better than Mythmaker

Wanna hear it but don’t wanna hear the leak.

Was kind of surprised how Ogre hated the last LP. He’s put a lot of emphasis on ohGr, a lot more than SP to me, in the past few years, so that revelation was kind of surprising in a weird way.

And I think cEvin has a lot of control in SP, but I think Rave should take another shot at it. Why not?

It’s going to be HUGE.

HUGE I tells ya.

Listened to Mythmaker earlier actually. The songs I originally didn’t like, I still didn’t like. But the songs that I liked, I still like. But then I realized that I actually liked six of the tracks. I could do without Jaher and Daze though. Politikil sounds more Download-ish. The second half of the album is easily the more experimental, while the first is a continuation of the super-poppy TGWOTR album. I rather the second half although some have disagreed.

And I HIGHLY doubt that Rave will ever come back. Something happened there… And I remember an interview with cEvin a few years back about Rave being too expensive for them them to work with. Something like that. Would sure beat Jakalope…that’s for sure.

Here is my take after listening to it for a few days. The more I listen to it the better it gets… easily trumps the previous two albums and is on the way of becoming my favorite SP album (or it will at least share the top slots with The Process, ViViSect VI and Back & Forth 3 & 4).

I can with all honesty say that this is the Skinny Puppy I was longing to hear even if I didn’t know of it or how to describe it.

While the form is new there is the necessary sonic and emotional gravitas that one would expect from a Skinny Puppy album. It is magnificent, dark, energetic, even sonically brutal at times, qualities that were somewhat lacking on the last two albums (they sound really poppy compared to this).

It is in a way a return to true form while being something completely new. Really did not expect this based on the early samples and I can’t wait till I get my hands on the physical copy.

Final thoughts: This album has renewed my faith on SP. It is one lean, hurt & hungry dog of an album and I sure hope they come out with a vinyl version. Mythmaker 2LP set is a good reference point for that, really like how it turned out.

They squashed their beefs. Rave and Ogre are pals

A little bit of insight from Ogre. I can’t wait to hear this album, from what I’ve read it appears to be inline with the older material. Resisting listening to the leaks is hard.

That interview does it no justice at all. Like GWOTR was a landmark album or something…

Finally picked this up. I definitely like this better than the last two Puppy releases but it’s still not hitting me quite like I want it to. It’s Halloween damn it and I want Skinny Puppy to sound scary not kooky.

lol “scary not kooky”…

yes this is definitely not a “halloween cd” or particularly spooky…

I just downloaded both the new ohGr and the new Skinny Puppy back to back and I think the ohGr is much better

I think “Skinny Puppy” suffers because they don’t write in the same room…they are just exchanging files…the chemistry is sorely missing

it’s better than ‘Mythmaker’ but not ‘Greater Wrong of the Right’ IMO

at the same time this one had a strange quality where it was really lacking in obvious hooks and memorable songs, so I might have to listen a few more times to get a better grasp…

just sounds like they don’t really know what “SKinny Puppy” is anymore and the ohGr project is sounding a lot more vital to me

EDIT - yeah 2nd listen it’s making a lot more sense. it definitely has the avant garde noisiness that was missing in the sound…

this

Last ohgr had to grow on me. HanDover was instant.

Great album. I was never a big fan of the Process so I think this ranks as the best album since Last Rights. It sounds like a lot of different eras coming together. Thoughts off the top of my head…

Ovirt has a Bites feel to it (minimal with some nice sampling).

Cullorblind reminds me of the Killing Game.

Wavy has a Candle vibe going on.

Ashas oozes darkness…slow, plodding, catchy chorus…the song was dedicated to a close friend of the Skinny Puppy camp.

Gambatte is weird, completely contrasts with the prior song…bouncy, poppy, doesn’t feel dark at all.

Icktums is Blue Serge 2011. Cool track, very dancy.

Point sounds like it could’ve come off Too Dark Park…enough said.

Brownstone is all over the place…chaotic stream of consciousness from Ogre.

Vyrisus and Village are more in line with the recent albums…guitar is the main mover on these tracks.

Noisex = Brap. I didn’t like it at first but after a few listens and hearing the subtleties, I changed my mind and consider a nice brap to end the album.
