Pre-90210 Jason Priestly as a punk. Hilarious. I definitely wanna check out Agent Orange now.
Any love for Return Of The Living Dead?

Yeah they were. 3rd one didn’t feel like it fit with the franchise, but the chick was hella hot. Still haven’t seen part 4, and they might be up to part 5.
Ha! Yeah, 3 was alright. 4 was pretty bad and I haven’t bothered with 5 yet.
I’m trying to find any clips from the SILVER SPOONS episode where Ricky liked some chick that would only go out with punk rockers so he and Freddy got all punked out.
Freddy had a totally rad green faked Mohawk.
Damn Gunnar, I guess Return Of The Living Dead flew right by you. I only mentioned it cuz it’s stereotypical punk rock cheese.
Yeah, I didn’t go there right away as it is one of the super obvious ones (but awesome, of course). “Class of 1984” is a must include also . . .
The best KKK I was ever a part of was the Kevin Kostner Klub.
Also, if you want to see fucked up check out The Act of Killing documentary. It’s about the death squads who killed 1 million+ “communists” in the mid-60s in Indonesia. Unforgettable. Not a date/family movie. Unless you’re dating someone in your family, then you’re probably suitably fucked up to enjoy this movie
Just finished “Space Is The Place”, the Sun Ra movie from 1974. Hmm.
“Only God Forgives” http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1602613/?ref_=sr_1
Don’t believe the Drive 2.0 trailer; to asian up the metaphors this is the cinematic yang to that (wonderful) film, taking every opportunity to severe audience expectations right from the first scene. In my estimation it evoked the better parts of Lynch & Takashi Miike while subverting the east meets west dynamo heroics of exploitative late 80’s Martial Arts fare (that’s right, Bloodsport). These references didn’t feel smothering, however. The movie has the same glacial pace of its predecessor while holding my attention the whole way with beautiful location shots and symbology just subtle enough not to annoy. Spoiler: Ryan Gosling is a terrible fighter. Or if Anton Chigurh has a katana, don’t mess with him.

I thought it was ok, it looks amazing but has all the depth of a puddle. Some folk seem to be lining up to praise it as a masterpiece but others hate it. Chang was great, i liked Gosling as well, but Kristin Scott Thomas was absolutely terrible with her Lady Macbeth/Oedipus’ mother routine, and the brother was rubbish as well.
The torture scene was pretty funny though. Thankfully it wasn’t quite as boring as Valhalla Rising. I think Refn delights in frustrating his audience, and after making a vaguely commercial film with Drive, this is one in the eye for the studio suits who thought he was the right choice to make The Equaliser film.
I’ve seen a lot of people spouting about hidden metaphors and all that, i thought everything was right there on the surface for you to pick up on if you paid attention, there really is nothing deep about it at all. You comparison to David Lynch and Takashi Miike is spot on though, but Refn’s trying so hard to BE them , he’s trying to force it instead of letting it happen naturally. Anyway, i thought it was ok, 2 1/2 out of 5 for looks alone, but it’ll test some people’s patience to breaking point. The people who walked out at Cannes at the violence must be absolute pansies though, there was nothing remotely shocking here.

If there’s a common criticism against this film it’s that yes, Refn got so swept up in replicating the feel of some other directors that it somewhat diminished the personal touch of the proceedings. Having only seen Drive (I have a few of his films on my Netflix queue, can’t wait to watch them) and loving it, I thought the direction was satisfying. The slow movements got to be tiresome but maybe it was naive to think the catatonic mood to be shaken up. Drive was ultimately kill-the-badguy save-the-girl. The dynamics with its quick eruptions of sudden violence made huge impressions. Even the fight scene in this one, another part that’s got people talking, is shot in this somber self reflective way.
The metaphors being surface level didn’t bother me. The byproduct of it being fairly easy to intellectually process means it might attract those people. You know the ones. People who still fancy themselves on a higher plane than us philistines because they’ve read a couple Palahniuk books and understand Tool albums. The torture scene was maybe an example of this but looking back at it, it worked very well. Refn is quite literally giving the audience an option out. “Women, close your eyes”.
Spot on Nick, every time i talk about the film i look back at what i’ve written and it seems really negative, and i don’t mean it to. I think it is a good enough film, it looks amazing, i just take issue with those critics who thought it was something out of this world. Maybe it could have been with a few changes. Damn those critics! Damn them to hell!!

Spring Breakers is the best film of 2013 so far.
By a mile.
