Seen any good movies lately?

[reply]There’s a tagline for ‘Shutter Island’ that says: “Someone is missing”

YEAH, A DIRECTOR!

Scorcese, I want those 2.5 hours of my life back. Should be called ‘Shitter Island’

The wife and I were thinking about going to see it.

What was so bad about it? Pm the deets if your gonna spoil anything (just in case others don’t want it spoiled) THe movie looks hella good!

It’s a mess. It feels like it was made by a first-timer. Awkward, silly shots. They use CGI in some scenes and it just looks cheap and unnecessary.

The acting for the most part is poor and inconsistent. DiCaprio is good in a certain difficult scene near the end but otherwise he can’t play the role right. He momentarily remembers his Boston accent of the character but just as quick loses it again.
Ben Kingsley is the only actor who wasn’t weak per say (but all he has to do is be Ben Kingsley) Max Von Sydow is wasted on his role.

The plot seems all jumbled but in the end it all falls into place in a protracted explanation. But the main spoiler/twist is so glaringly obvious from the start it’s the first thing you think of when the first mystery appears.

I think it is supposed to be a horror film but it certainly is not scary. There are times when it tries to be scary but fails so they just use sudden loud jolty noises/instruments. Lame.

It becomes so obvious you end up just waiting for it to end, which it takes forever to do.

There are a few considerations within the film that are interesting (psychotherapy, alternative treatment, etc.) but they are not developed well and are almost redundant by the end. There’s one character thrown in (Ted Levine) just for him to basically say “I love violence” that god must love it that’s why its so prevalent.

I wouldn’t recommend it at all. The only good films Scorcese ever made were gangster films, Raging Bull and Taxi Driver. He’s not up to it for other types of films.

ok
is it as murder mystery then? a supernatural thriller? the Ads seem so vague and mysterious that they do a good job of selling it. What’s the plot of it?

I’ve heard Shutter Island was shitty as well and that the “twist” was glaringly obvious the whole time from a co-worker whose opinion I trust.

She basically said the same about the lame score and that Scorcese can’t direct a proper horror/thriller etc. Almost word for word from Mick’s post in fact.

I would avoid this one grmpy…

I agree 100% with Mick’s review. If you’ve seen the previews you’ve seen most of the “scary” parts anyway.

I feel kinda sorry for Marty though, it must be hard to always live up to his reputation. But yeah, he really should stick to the hard-boiled gangster movies, its what he does best.

Tarantino’s appearance and demeanor have always reminded me of that of a pedophile. For example, I don’t think his character on Dusk till dawn was him acting, I think that’s really who he is. I have no proof of any of this it’s just the vibe I get from the dude.

He raped a fat lady in Dusk Till Dawn… and wanted to bang that girl played by Juliete Lewis who clearly looks over 18 years of age.

He just has a giant fuckin head thats all. lol

so another martin puts out a letdown piece of work?

and i think the showbiz term for forgetting your accent and having it fade in and out during a movie is known as “kevin costner in robin hood” syndrome

Man the one that bugs me the most is Keeanu Reeves in Devil’s advocate! He switches between country bumpkin And Bill so many fuckin times it almost makes the movie unwatchable.

Yeah. Void, we’ll probably skip this one till it comes out on NEtflix. We’ve already met our quota of shitty movies this year with Legion.

There was another one that came out with Shutter called “strangers” or “crazies” or something like that. I heard no reviews on it, but it also looked pretty interesting.

if I had to actually go to a theater and see a movie it’d probablygo see the runaways… i’m a sucker for rock bios.

just saw that movie (forget the name already sent it back to netflix) with jack white, the edge, and jimmy page takling about guitar. Now I play drums, but this was on hell of a good documentary.

and I just saw moon (directed by david bowie’s son) and it was one of the better smart sci-fi movies i’ve seen in ages. with just a cast of 2. sam rockwell and the voice of kevin spacey basically you’d think it’d be worse than it was. def wasn’t like tom hanks and wilson for those 2 hours in castaway

No! No! What about Keanu Plankface in Bram Stoker’s Dracula?!?!?!

Good heavens were they on drugs when they made that casting call?

Keanu as a 19th century English gentleman?!?!

Didn’t any of those cokehead film industry types hear MAJOR alarm bells ringing??

Or…have I just answered my own question?

the fact that he still gets roles is beyond me. I think his only performances that were good were bill and ted, and he was surprisingly good in the first Matrix(and by good I mean he doesn’t bug me like he normally does)
Late,

he was good in that paula abdul video way back in the day… but then she got mc scat-cat and well, he had to find a new job… as far as his role in dracula i think the studios are affraid to question the director. i think ed norton would have killed if he had keanu’s role in dracula. it’s really a shame they had to make those 2 sequals to the matrix.

Ed Norton would have done better?

A sock puppet would have done better than Keanu.

this movie called I sell the dead. It’s got the one hobbit that’s also on lost, and he’s this grave digger and sells the bodies and then he gets arrested and ron pearlman pays him a visit before he gets hung… Great movie. Really well done indie. Worth a rental

Thanks Porkspam I meant to see that one when it was in the theaters, but missed out. Good to know it’s on DVD now.

Shit i doubt it would have been in theaters more than a weekend. I mean it’s a great movie, but i just don’t see a comedy about selling dead bodies lasting long at all if it’s not released by a major studio

Watched ‘Scanners’ last night. I wish Cronenberg still made films like this. There’s been plenty of times I’ve wanted to drill a hole in my head (but not because of any telepathic prowess, just headaches)

Some cool movies I’ve seen lately…

Requiem for a Dream
Stir of Echoes
Pandorum

Death & the Compass
