RIP Jeff Hanneman

Died four hours ago from liver failure, according to Slayer’s Facebook post. Now please, by all means, squabble with one another about Slayer’s legacy (or lack of therein).

One of the kids from Kriss Kross died this morning, too.

Sad sad news, i’ve seen them live a few times and knew his health was bad but didn’t know it was this bad. I love Slayer, i think they’re absolute pioneers and mainstays of that scene, and i don’t know if they would or should continue. I know he’s been out for a while, but that’s my opinion anyway. RIP Jeff

The poor lad. For some reason something I always remembered about him was a ranking he got in a music magazine’s ratings of the top 100 guitarists of all time, that must have been at least 10 years ago.

He was placed on 98th, which I thought was unfair.

Sad loss. He was always better than Kerry King. He also wrote Tormentor, and that’s my all time favorite Slayer song.

That’s odd I just made a Kris’s Kross joke in class yesterday…

Damn, bummer.

This sucks.

Great guy, great band. Fuck.

Very sad. He was Slayer.

This FFFucking SUCKS!!!

I’m not a Slayer fan at all but Hanneman was a great guitarist and a leader in his field. His unique style was copied by countless wannabees but few if any could match his intensity and virtuosity.

RIP My Friend…

I love Slayer. I’ve always loved Slayer. But what makes you say “he was Slayer”? I don’t say this to sound condescending or to start a fight in a thread about someone dying. I ask because, although I have loved the band for years, I’ve never paid much attention to who writes the majority of the music.

I know King writes most of the lyrics, right? They look terrible and juvenile on paper but that totally changes when Arya’s “singing” them. I love that guys voice.

And am I the only one who preferred Bostaph’s drumming over Lombardo’s? I know that may be blasphemy amongst Slayer fans but Bostaph’s drumming always sounded so tight and fierce to me. Like an angry virgin’s vagina. He had crazy energy. “War Zone” is insane and his drumming on all of Undisputed Attitude is excellent.

I thought my preferring Bostaph was due to better production, since Lombardo’s stuff was recorded at an earlier time with most likely less money. Then Lombardo came back and it sounded dry and lacking in energy a bit. His snare sound bugs me sometimes. Like the snares are too loose.

I prefer Lombardo.

But I know what you’re talking about. There is a distinct difference.

Lombardo’s sound is more organic. More tribal. Which is what I want from Slayer.

When I’m listening to Meshuggah or Strapping Young Lad, I prefer that tighter, more mechanical kit sound.

jeff was slayer because when someone sits down and lists their tom 10 slayer songs, invariably (unless they are kerry king…) at least 8 of the songs were written by jeff, and the other two were probably written by jeff AND kerry. also, jeff was the only member of slayer to never act like, come across as, pose like, or degrade himself by writing songs like a total douchebag rockstar cockhole.

Tom has been a hypocrite asshole who is vocally just in it for the money for about 4-5 albums now, kerry is a money hungry cunt who thinks that by tattooing ignorant ‘tribal’ tattoos on his head and pretending like his fat guy shits dont stink peopel wont notice that he is the asshole ringo starr of thrashmetal, and lombardo isnt even in the band anymore.

jeff was a class act, a killer player, a brilliant writer, a fun lyricist, and most of all he was the thing that kept slayer slayer all these years.

that said, i do see what you are getting at with the drummer deal, and i think it is exemplified by a few things. with paul, the band wrote more straighforward on the floor thrashers, added 7 strings to the mix, did more chugging, played more… machine head style. that was cool and all… but when i want slayer, i want seasons. i want hell awaits. i want south of heaven. i want the music to be primal and pulsing. if i want tightened precision thrash, i will listen to any number of tech-death kinda bands. when i want slayer, i want jeff’s murderous riffs ontop of primal human drum grooves.

Definitely two different styles. If you really want to hear Lombardo at his absolute best, you need to give GRIP, INC. a listen.

Often imitated, never outdone, this guy was undoubtedly a massive influence on generations of guitarists. He employed minor fifths and descending scales in a way that sounded trademark (and “evil”, South of Heaven is a great example of his writing style). He wrote my all time favorite guitar riff in “Angel of Death” and wrote in my opinion the majority of Slayer’s best songs. He will be missed.

Atom, his role was tantamount to a Martin Gore. Never the “face” of the band, I get the vibe he was respected above Araya and King for being music first, image and antics second. He really was the glue that held Slayer together.

That rules.

^ And that is what makes me appreciate Slayer even more. The music of Slayer is literally hippie repellent. What could be better? Because who wants to be anywhere near a hippie, much less more than one hippie?

Fun fact: They actually chose the name “Slayer” because when they were starting out and playing in California in the early 80’s under different band names (one was rumored as being “Dragonslayer”, which Kerry King denies) the sheer aggressive, non-pussiness attitude of their music caused enough hippie deaths to fill an entire parking lot.

After one particularly impressive show that resulted in the deaths of over 187 hippies, Brian Slagel, founder of Metal Blade Records, approached Jeff and suggested that they name their band “The Hippie Slayers” (which ironically made them sound more like a band of hippies who “slay”). Jeff, being modest as usual, decided that “Slayer” was a much better name. Not necessarily because it looked and sounded better but because he felt that the band shouldn’t take all of the credit for the recent extermination of those smelly, whiny, lazy, STD spreading, useless, parasites. He believed the support of the fans played just as big a part in it all. Even after doing such a service for society, and some would argue the human race, Jeff was almost modest to a fault and he will be sorely missed.
