He dug up some frootage from the 1984 tour in Boston. Super quality!
Very nice!!!
Patty Jourgensen audience left.
And the same backing tapes leftover from the '83 tour.
But with the “When I say Work, you say Love” bit. Completely cheeseball. But you know, in an awesome way.
So who’s on stage?

He’s sporting a 242 Medusa’s shirt. I bought the re-issue of that shirt last year. Interesting ‘dress’ he’s wearing

Wow. I always hated that song, but seeing Al do it live he even makes this fake-British pop song seem pretty damn badass in a live setting.
Back to the oh-so-overly-trodden topic of whether Al was ashamed of this music at the time . . . . it he was, he sure hides it WELL. He looks the happiest I’ve EVER seen him in a performance. It’s infectious to see that much joy on a stage and I’m feeling good just witnessing it second-hand 20 years after the fact. I can’t imagine the amount of positive energy in the club while it was happening.
Good stuff. Thanks for sharing, y’all!!!

There’s somebody on percussion behind Patty. I think Stevo is sitting at his kit because I can see his kick drum thumping.
patty was a pretty lil thing
al is beyond gay in this vid

Maybe it was a slip of the key or maybe time got away from you but 83 til now is 30 years, sir. not 20.

Nice!
patty was a pretty lil thing
and to think, when he was fucking that woman he used to “pull out and cum in her mouth.” There is no way I’ll ever be able to see her and not think of Al’s quote.

I cannot stomach anything from WS or his 80’s pop garbage but I really do appreciate seeing footage like this. Because it’s so bizarre whenever to watch and the quality of this video makes it weirder.

That’s exactly what I was thinking. He’s so into it. I think the fact that he’s ashamed of anything that came out of that album/era but openly admits to sucking dick shows just how incredibly gay the music was.
With Sympathy: Gayer than sucking dick
Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
Al would have just turned 26 when this was filmed.
This Al fits right in with the era of music and clothing.
I also think he looks pretty happy, but we all change over time. It could have been gradual or one little thing that sent him over the edge.
It may be that he just really grew to love the creative process vs the performing the same songs night after night to the same people. I could see how it could get repetitive and boring getting on a stage and playing your heart out every night if performing is not something you love to do. It has to be something that you enjoy to be able to deal with the hardships that touring can impose. You get to go to all these places, but you don’t really get to see much of them; the food can suck; things can get f’ed up, and the schedule sucks too. Sleep part of the early morning and during the day, get up and do it all over again for 3 months, 6 month, a year. When all you really want to do is to go home and sleep in your own bed.
It’s so strange to see him then vs now. The only thing I have left to wonder about is what the heck was the trigger? You don’t go from flaming smiley face to a redneck that hates to tour by aging. There had to be something that flipped the switch. Some weird experience or something. Either that or there is even more to the puzzle that I don’t get. This aspect of Al is the most intriguing thing about him, to me.
Probably the sloth that heroin turns you in to.

Exactly. If it wasn’t such a sudden and drastic change I wouldn’t think much of it.
I think this is the most intriguing thing about him because he rarely talks about it and when he does he just dismisses it completely. It would be easier to dismiss it if we had some random camera footage of him looking miserable while performing this crap or him onstage/cut to backstage taking a shit in a urinal while wearing sunglasses indoors with a giant black cowboy hat. But he looks genuinely into it and happy.
That heroin kicked in quick and completely changed everything faster than some of the biggest junkies I’ve known if that’s true.
the video quality is astonishing. i wish it would have the full show like that. fuck, this is just, way awesome.
A life affirming song and performance. Thanks for sharing.
I’m a bit mystified as well. I’m actually in the middle of the book right now, and find it fascinating how open and self-deprecating he is with so many things… yet he still won’t take responsibility for With Sympathy, despite the mountain of evidence refuting his claims. At one point he even makes fun of his own fans who like that stuff.
I mean, seriously… did he get sodomized while that record was playing, or something? Or maybe the fear of Steve Albini cutting off his balls, shoving them down his throat and sewing his mouth shut for making wussy music finally just got to him?
