Relapse review

TL;DR version:

“99 Percenters” is one of my favorite jams on Relapse.

Facepalm version:

For those who can’t quite define industrial, play “99 Percenters” for anybody and they’ll get the idea. Part metal, part machine, part human players and part samples, it’s a rich pudding of delights.

Looking forward to the punk influenced songs, though.

The Bush trilogy and even Cover Up got some oddly positive reviews, too.

I’m just going to have to listen for myself.

A punk influence wouldn’t be too surprising after Die In A Crash. Wouldn’t mind hearing more stuff in that vein.

Musically you can’t beat it for an opener. A ripping guitar solo slowly builds as Al Jourgensen does a bit of spoken word before the explosion of power ejaculates in your face like a thousand knives.

That’s a pretty nice analogy. But does it actually hold up with what the music actually sounds like or is this just some biased little fucktard?

Wouldn’t mind punk songs at all. Question is, can Al pull it off?

This is some of the heaviest, most inventive stuff I’ve heard from him in years.

Overall, Relapse delivers more of what I expect to hear from a Ministry album. Interesting overdubs, pummelling guitar/drum beats and against the grain lyrical content - the three things that have always attracted me to the band. Anyone that has enjoyed Ministry over the past thirty years will certainly find Relapse well worth a listen.

Indeed, Al Jourgensen is back with a familiar band of ‘‘experienced wingmen’’ for what is undoubtedly one of the best MINISTRY offerings to come along in quite some time.

MINISTRY manages to prove that they are not immune to the trappings of releasing one of an album’s worst tracks as a single on 99 Percenters. A protest song for the “Occupy Movement,” 99 Percenters falls flat musically, and from a lyrical perspective feels unfinished.

Are these reviewers fucking imbeciles?

How bad does BAD have to be before a reviewer will say “THAT WAS BAD”?

I’m guessing a leak will follow soon

Jackhammers . . . ejaculating knives . . . wooden pepper shakers . . .

This writer is a joke.
His metaphors are all over the place.

payola?

or is it more that reviewers are getting younger and are too young and dumb to remember what ministry was like before the rot set in?

One of the reviewers did actually say that 99% is the worst track. I’m hoping that guy was right.

Another bit from the Lithium Magazine review:

Relapse finishes off with ‘Bloodlust’, a mixture of quick drum movements and harmonizing that ALMOST sounds like a throwback to the electro-pop material that launched Ministry back in the early 1980s. if there is some semblance of a circle to be drawn from Jourgensen’s debut album With Sympathy unto Relapse, ‘Bloodlust’ could be just the track to do so.”

That piques my curiosity, but I’m not gonna get my hopes up, not with that band line-up. It could be more enjoyable with the supposed punk influence and no Bush references.

1002

Bloodlust was a bonus track on the Buck Santa pack that 13th planet was slinging before the holiday. I am surprised that a leak of this track isn’t out there.

From Amazon.ca

Relapse (Digi-Pak) [Import]
Ministry (Artist) | Format: Audio CD

As if. I shant be paying that anytime soon.

I have a feeling that price will drop a bit around the release date…

35 Canadian? What is that, like 12 pesos or something?

Not to knock “heavy metal critics” but…those ARE heavy metal critics. Take that for what you will.

"The blistering machine gun fire drum beats attack your brain and leave you screaming for mercy and then the buzzsaw guitar assault literally cuts through your arms and leaves you without no limbs but then the lyrics inject pure adrenaline fueled angst and inspires you to use your teeth to pick up your arms and beat yourself with them. Then track # 5 comes on and it punches you in the teeth like a leviathan of pure destructive mayhem. This album is like a comet hurtling toward Earth with like guitars and microphones and stuff and it will like literally rape you and then rape you again . . . . "

35.00 CAD = 34.6582 USD

Our money is almost on par with the USD these days!

I second this.
